Ordered this to grind down a part of our 48" mower deck that was slightly hitting the new blades due to wear. Had this little project taken care of in less than 15 minutes. The clamp that secures the spark guard into place could be improved as it is somewhat flimsy, still, overall it's a great little machine. I had this for over 2 years, I use it mainly to wire brush, purchased separately, off grass weeds that grow between the crevices of the sidewalk. I used the flap disc that came with the tool very recently to sand off old paint from the house exterior, works great albeit more aggressively. the locking mechanism for the shroud is a bit precarious and can get in the way of some work, you can always leave it off, the safety switch to turn on and off is a bit tricky to work out otherwise solid overall grinder. ... show more

I have used Dewalt angle grinders for decades, so that is what I am comparing to. I do DIY stuff. Currently, I need to change out between cutter, grinder and flap disks. Because of the time factor that the changes require, I wanted a couple of cheap grinders to supplement my Dewalt. Pros: 1) Cheap for the 7.5amp power. I got 2 Avid grinders for under $50 on Amazon. They feel comfortably solid in the hands as compared to the comparably cheap (and lower amp) HF grinders. 2) Cam lock shield - very easy to adjust the shield without the need for screw driver. Note that Dewalt shields are not interchangeable with Avid's, but I found that a Ryobi shield was. 3) Standard 2-pin lock nut as opposed to the Dewalt hex lock nut. 4) Anti-roll over feature when putting the grinder down upside down. Cons: 1) Noisy and vibrates compared to the Dewalt. It seems to come from the motor. Likely cheaply constructed creating friction and vibration. Avid seems to know that their motors are low quality, as they ship as part of the contents a set of brushes to replace worn brushes! This implies they expect DIY brush replacement and that it is a known wear issue. 2) You are going to loose those brushes before they will be needed. 3) Not unique to Avid, but compared to Dewalt, the transmission gear is smaller. That reduces the front profile for closer cuts (good). But resulting smaller gearing in the Avid 7.5 amp input does not result in the same torque at the output shaft as the larger geared Dewalt 5 amp. The Avid seems to bog down earlier than the Dewalt notwithstanding its higher current rating. 4) Also not unique to Avid - maybe my personal preference, but I prefer the Dewalt paddle trigger to the Avid slip/rocker switch. The Avid switch makes it too easy to forget the finger movement necessary to turn off the power after performing a task. The switch seems to be rough and jerky, requiring full attention to ensure it turns off. 5) The power cord's insulation is cheap. That means the cord is stiff, making it difficult to coil for storage. It gets worse in the cold (experienced in high 20s temp). Wash: 1) the 5 disks are standard stuff. Don't make a decision be buy this tool on these consumables. 2) The 2-pin lock-nut tool is standard. But these tools are annoyingly short handled and thin, requiring arm strength in place of leverage and excess pressure on the fingers. Anyone who uses these grinders regularly have either trashed these tools in favor of a longer handled version, or modified the standard ones for both length and thickness to make them less of an actual pain. My Dewalt remains my go-to grinder. But for the lighter jobs, the Avids are just fine. ... show more
