I have 6 large dogs in my family, 3 of which I take to office with me every day. It is a necessity that at times I be able to isolate the dogs individually or in groups. The Cardinal MG-15 makes this very easy to do. The installation instructions are simple to follow. It takes about 10 minutes to install the gate in a standard doorway. The latch mechanism is very simple to use and allows the gate to open either two ways or one depending on which installation procedure you prefer. The construction and finish and rugged. Dogs being dogs means they try to figure out how to open or remove the gate. This trait is what led me to purchase the MG-15. In the past I tried using wooden or plastic baby gates. The dogs quickly figured out that they could push the gates over or, in one case, simply chew it to pieces. NOT THE MG-15!! the dogs have been working on these since I got them and there isn't even a scratch in the gate. They push against the gate and the latch mechanism holds. Several of my dogs weigh over 100 pounds and the gate withstands the stress. I was happy enough that over the past 2 years, I've purchased a total of 6 of these gates. I use them at work to keep the dogs in my office if I have to go to a meeting. I use them at home to confine them in our designated "dog areas". In one room I actually have one area (our dog room) where I installed one gate at floor level and the other just above it to form a barrier that covers the whole exit top to bottom. This was to counter a particularly agile dog who discovered he could leap over the gate at floor level. Overall, we are very pleased with the Cardinal MG-15 Auto-lock Gate. We wholeheartedly recommend this no matter how many dogs you have or the size of the dog. You won't be disappointed. UPDATE: One of the gates had a problem and the latching mechanism broke. I contacted Cardinal Customer Service and within 3 days I had a replacement part and the gate is working good as new. Thank you, Libby, for your help! Having tried 3 other gates, this gate is by far, the best one. Yes, it's a little more expensive than most others, but I think the price difference is small but oh, so worth it. The installation is very easy. The screws that come with the gate are short and are probably meant for installing the gate at doorways where you would be screwing directly into the wood door jamb. But if you are like me, you most likely will be installing it into some drywall, so you will need longer screws (and possibly drywall anchors if you cannot screw directly into a stud). To me, this is a minor inconvenience because I have so many extra screws and various hardware in the garage. I'm fairly handy (engineer by profession) and was able to install this gate in about 15 minutes. The setscrews that are used to adjust and set the width of the gate were too short so I placed a penny between the setscrew and the gate. This helped to close that gap and also to protect the gate from the setscrew digging into it. I don't consider this a show-stopper. What I love about this gate is how easy it is to operate, especially with one hand. Pull the ring up and twist. The mechanism is simple which is the beauty of it. As an aerospace engineer, we like to design under the mantra of KISS (keep it simple, stupid). The simpler the design, the less chances of things malfunctioning or going wrong. The main reason I bought this gate was because of the auto-lock feature (not to be confused with auto-close). The feature is perfect because once you unlock/open it, all you have to do is close the gate and it automatically locks again. The gate has the option of being able to open both ways or you can set it so that it will only open in one direction (for safety reasons, like when installed at the top of the stairs). Another nice feature is that if you wanted to remove the gate, it's very simple. You simply remove a split-ring (aka, a key ring), slide up the hinge-rod, and the entire gate is off. The only things left are what's screwed to the wall -- the hinge bracket and the locking mechanism. At night, when we like to leave the gate open, I've installed a magnetic latch on the wall, close to the floor, that holds the gate open at night so we don't accidentally run into it. The magnetic latch costs about $2 at the local hardware store and perfectly attracts to the steel bracket (where the setscrews are) at the bottom of the gate. The main body of the gate is aluminum so the magnet would not work, but luckily, those brackets are steel. My wife loves that I came up with this as it keeps the gate out of our way when we need it to. I might even suggest to the manufacturers to include this cheap, but very useful, magnetic latch as part of the gate. Overall, we love this gate. Other gates are difficult to open/close, flimsy, difficult to install, and/or just too flimsy. Update 02/08/2013: All three gates are still going strong. I do want to point out that our "main" gate is starting to show some signs of wear. The locking mechanism has a pin that runs over a channel that turns 90-degrees. That corner is starting to round out which makes the latch a little more sensitive in the open position (i.e., just bumping into the latch will cause it to rotate and lock). This hasn't become a problem yet -- I say yet because as the channel wears out, the latch will not be able to stay in the open position at some point. This would not undermine the safety of the gate. All it would mean is that you'd have to manually lock the gate. Having said that, this particular gate has been our main gate for the last 2.5 years, which means it is opened/closed about 20 times a day. That's about 18,000 actuations! I personally and professionally (as an aerospace structural engineer) find that impressive. I'm also impressed that metal fatigue has not been an issue as well, considering the high impact loads that small pin in the latch experiences every time it's closed. Overall, when our main gate latch wears out, I will try to contact the manufacturer to see if they can sell me just the latch. That would be a more economical solution. And in the worst case, if they don't, I would have no hesitation in buying a new gate again. And in case some of you are wondering why almost 3 years I would still need a gate -- well, that's because we've got a little girl coming at the end of April :)

This is the best dog gate we have ever had, and we've had a few that could not hold up to our dog running & jumping at them full speed. We've had one of these since 2021 with no issues. It's solid, the paint is resilient and the latch, although a little hard to work at first, loosens up just enough to make it a bit easier for us humans to open but there is no way our dog can figure out how to open this one.. unlike so many others. Since we have a tall dog and little dogs we got the height extender. With a little extra work (I think my husband drilled a couple holes) we installed the extender on the bottom of the gate rather than the top because having it at the top makes grabbing the top of the gate more likely to break that part off, it gets in the way of the gate latch and it just looks way better on the bottom. I do also recommend getting some much longer screws to mount everything to the walls really strongly.

Auto-Lock gate is great. Many thanks to those that wrote prior reviews about the short screws not holding on drywall. I purchased the #10 - 1.5" sheet metal screws before installing and they worked perfectly. I was not happy that I was shipped a gate that had obviously been returned by a prior customer. The box was falling apart and the ties that should hold the gate pieces together during shipment were all cut off inside - leaving a few parts of the gate rubbing together and scratching the paint off. In addition, one of the eye bolts was smooth and totally useless. Had to make another trip to the hardware store for a threaded eye bolt. I'm keeping the gate because it is solid and does not have a bar at the bottom to trip over. Cardinal should definitely pay more attention to quality control.

My wife and I are very pleased with this baby gate. We used this at the top of our staircase. We wanted a hardware mounted swing gate, without the bar on the bottom. Bar-less was important because we were worried about the tripping hazard of having a bar going across the bottom as sometimes found in other types of gates, especially at the top of the stairs. In the gate market overall (other gates), it is quite common to come across duds (not this one), usually with one of or a combination of: 1) Faulty plastic latches; 2) Complex / difficult installation; 3) Lack of sturdiness, easily knocked over or opened; 4) Cheap materials. Fortunately – in my opinion - this gate has none of these issues. It is very well made, with great latch / closing system, very sturdy (I even tried sitting on it like in the videos), and uses high quality materials that give confidence. I am not very handy, so expected some challenges with installation. The installation took me a good 20-30 minutes, but it was fairly easy and with no issues – I wanted to reinforce the drywall a bit, which was hollow inside so I wanted to make sure it had an extra strong grip. It looks good I think, my wife was impressed with the results. I especially liked the flexibility of the installation, there is the ability to adjust the gate to fit once you put on the brackets, just in case you are a little off. I also liked the double swing option, and the fact that they included a stopper in case you only want it to swing one way. Contrary to a small number of other reviews, I did not find the latch difficult to pull up at all, even when holding a baby. Neither does my wife, who is of relatively small build. It is a clever latch system, and I think it works quite well. Overall, a well thought out, sturdy gate which we feel confident will safely protect our son from the stairs.

This gate is very well made, especially for keeping clever toddlers and pets out of harm's way. However, I needed the gate to keep an older, visually challenged dog from falling down a flight of stairs, while allowing his elderly owner (my mom) easy access to the stairs. In order to do that, I had to make 2 adjustments: 1) add homemade clamps to install the gate on wrought iron railing, and 2) replace the gate latch's high-tension spring with a lighter spring. I am posting photos of our gate with its adjustments. The gate had to be attached at the top of the stairs to wrought iron railing only 1" wide. After reading the review for the Cardinal Gates Square Clamp Attachment, I realized the bolts would be too long to use for the 1" thick wrought iron railing. So I made my own small clamps that would allow me to install the gate as close to the top of the railing as possible. I spray-painted the blocks and the hardware white to be unobtrusive. The gate is supposed to be installed a few inches from the ground, so I was lucky that it barely cleared the carpeted floor at the top of the stairs. I originally made clamps for the latch mechanism as well, but later I removed them and instead strapped the latch to the railing with strong strapping tape. The gate works perfectly, latching with a swift swing of the door. My elderly mom has balance issues, and I was worried that using a gate at the top of the stairs would lead to her falling. But she is much less likely to fall using this Cardinal Auto-Lock Gate at the top of the stairs, than she was with the former gate, which she had to turn around to close on her way downstairs. Ideally I would have liked an auto-CLOSE/lock gate at the top of the stairs for my mom, but all the ones I saw in stores and online did not attach with bolts and would have been more difficult to attach to a 1"-thick railing via improvised clamps. She prefers to pull this gate toward her when going downstairs and to push the gate when coming up. She doesn't need the gate to open in both directions, but I decided against installing the "one-way" gadget because I prefer to push the gate when going both down and up the stairs. My mom also has two replaced shoulders, so initially she struggled with the tight spring on the gate latch when coming upstairs (with the gate above her). So I took the latch to a hardware store, and a really nice man pulled out the tight spring. I thought about leaving the spring out of the latch altogether, but I don't think the mechanism worked as well that way. I couldn't find an appropriate single replacement spring, so I bought a box of springs and threaded a lighter one onto the latch. The tension is now perfect and easier for my mother to unlatch the gate when coming upstairs. I'm glad I bought this gate and made the adjustments, especially after an Amazon reviewer provided very helpful information to me. I wish I had gotten this gate sooner instead of trying others first. I had been looking at gates for a couple months before our son started crawling. We needed a gate for the top of the steps leading to the basement. The builder left this open and finished the stairwell rather than putting a normal door to the stairs here. I knew we needed a hard-mounted gate and was surprised to see these are pretty rare in the seas of cheap plastic pressure-mounted gates. After reading the other reviews on this I decided it was the best fit for my needs. Points I found important: - Mounts with screws, as few as 4 for minimal damage to walls/posts - The design allows it to be mounted above the finished trim (no drilling in the trim) - All metal (I can easily see our little guy grabbing and shaking any gate we get) - White to match house (comes in black too) - Couldn't be taller than 33" or the hand-rail would prevent installation The mount/hinge system is simple but effective. Instructions are good, one sheet (read it all before starting!). It comes with small plastic sleeves that fit over the hinge bar so there is no metal-on-metal for the moving parts (for the hinge at least). The hardest part about installation was leveling the door and accounting for a little sagging in the gate for placing the latch piece. There's not a lot of room for error here so be sure to extend the gate and tighten the two screws that hold the gate pieces together before placing the latch piece on the opposite wall (you'll see what I mean when you get it). Another reviewer mentioned he used pennies to add extra support for this. I ended up using a small 1/8" thick piece of plastic that I cut up to fit. No potential for scratches on the gate this way. I used a small 6-inch level every step of the way. I found that I needed to adjust the bottom eye-bolt to push the gate out more on the bottom to be level (the top eye-bolt was screwed in all the way). This is the entire purpose of those eye-bolts, to adjust for leveling. I ended up using only 2 of the 4 screws for the latch plate since I was in a stud. I also used washers I had (for more surface area contact) and longer 1.5 inch screws to get through the drywall and into the studs. The included screws are only good if you plan on screwing this directly into wood (door frame). It does not come with drywall anchors. After a week of use I noticed the gate had settled a bit and my latch was now 1/8 inch higher than the gate lip resulting in them hitting each other each time the gate was closed. I solved this by finding small nylon washers (55 cents at Lowes) and put these on the bottom of the hinge, lifting the bottom eye-bolt (and therefore, the gate) up that 1/8" inch I lost. The biggest con I can come up with is the latch piece. It works great, I'm just concerned about 2 years of metal-on-metal each time the gate is closed. After a dozen uses the paint was been stripped off the latch itself from rotating in the holder that it's in. This is a trade-off of an all-metal gate I suppose. Overall I'm very happy with this gate and am confident it will last the 2 years it's designed for (for kids anyway). The gates at Baby's R Us have nothing on this.

It's okay. It is hard to find a narrow hard-mounted gate, so if you have no other options, it's worth a shot. We had a perfect Safety First walk-thru narrow gate, but the kids finally broke it (lasted 6 or 7 years with heavy use!) and it is no longer made, nor anything very similar. This was one of the only walk-thru gates I could find which was narrow enough for a very narrow doorway in our home; &, I hate the latch mechanism on this one. It's rather stupidly designed, in my opinion. It would be fine if you didn't use it often, or didn't have kids and other stuff to carry as you go through the gate. This gate also did not install as sturdily as our old gate. We took it down, & I'm having a custom gate made for the space. I may give it away, or donate it, but it is not my favorite gate, and I've used quite a few in different areas of the home. It would be much better with a different latch. Overall, I just give it an average rating.
