  • Same Exact Tool as Harbor Freight for less then 1/2 the Price
Just an FYI - this is the same exact ball joint tool that Harbor Freight sells. The instructions even mention Harbor Freight. However, it's less than half the price. At the time I purchased this, I got it on Amazon for $40, but Harbor Freight was asking $90. Overall, very impressed. The instructions don't say anything prohibiting using an impact, so I lubricated the threads with lithium grease and used my impact gun to remove and install ball joints on my C219. It functioned perfectly and made extremely easy work of them. I had both sides removed and re-installed in less than 15 minutes. The tool is still in perfect condition. It honestly feels really well-built. The included cups will likely work with a wide range of ball joints too. There are quite a few different sizes and configurations included. ... show more

  • A strong sturdy product that works well -- if you know how to use it
It's hard to believe you can get a worthwhile ball joint press for around $50 these days, but I took a chance on this model from ATP. I've used presses borrowed from auto parts stores before, but now live too far out of town for that. I could find no difference between the ATP model and others costing $100 to $130 (OK, the more expensive modes come with a few more adapters, but those in this kit were more than sufficient to remove and install new upper and lower ball joints on a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer with 300,000 miles on it(!) Super Important: if you've never done this before watch a *whole bunch* of online videos before attempting it. There is more than one way to do this job and using the right techniques can be the difference between success or failure... of the tool, the ball joint or both. So why do these presses have so many bad reviews about them failing/bending/breaking? Just a couple of basic tips based on 30 years of experience: 1) Before using the press, lubricate the big screw that goes through the big clamp with regular heavy-duty motor oil (not synthetic). Run the screw through both ends of the clamp several times to also lubricate the threads inside the clamp and make sure all threads were cut clean and the *entire* length of the screw runs smoothly through the clamp. If they don't you've got to return and replace the press for one that does or else chase the threads with the proper tools until it does. This is absolutely necessary -- and re-lube/check the thread action every time you start a new job with the press. 2) Use as few adapters as you can. With some careful fiddling you can usually get it down to no more that 1 to 3 adapters on the clamp & ball joint. Again, watch a bunch of those online videos for creative ideas on how come up with a *simple* setup for your situation (and also what not to do). Every adapter you can eliminate from the clamp stack means more direct torque applied to the ball joint and less stress on the press itself. 3) Secure the assembly you're working on -- use heavy wire, rope or bungee cords if the assembly is on the car. If the assembly is flopping around or unstable while you're turning the press screw, most of the torque you're applying will be wasted. Be sure to use plenty of lubricating/rust-dissolving penetrant on the target. Lots of it. I use PB Blaster first, and follow up a few minutes later with WD-40. Let the oil work for at least 15-20 minutes, but I sometimes let it work for hours or come back the next day. 4) To operate the press use a 1/2-inch socket wrench with a 2 or 3-foot long breaker bar. Or dedicate a cheap $25 1/2-inch ratcheting/reversing torque wrench to the job (that will ruin it for precise torque work, yes, but you can keep it around to break free lug nuts on tires and other large, stubborn fasteners). The trick is: Do not to try to press the bearing out too fast. Go slow and steady, building up the pressure of the clamp on the target with each half or quarter turn. This is how these presses were designed to work. Trying to do it fast is asking for trouble. But... whatever you do: Do NOT use an IMPACT WRENCH. Hey... what the?! You don't want me to use my expensive impact wrench to slam-zip that big old screw down hard and pop that puppy out in hot second? Am I crazy or something? No, and here's why: It applies too much pressure to the screw/clamp/adapter stick too fast. Doing it without power tools lets the press work the way it was designed to -- and designed for the way ball joints and bearings stay in firmly place during heavy road use with just metal-to-metal pressure contact alone -- and yet still able to be changed out when necessary. Remember, these things were all thought-out and engineered *before* impact wrenches were invented in 1934). Too much pressure applied too fast tends to crack, bend or break things in a situation like this. Slow and steady does it the trick here. Oh, sure, if you're some kind of impact wrench wizard with years of experience and true finesse in adjusting and using your gun you can probably go ahead and fire away. But I'm betting you won't be the person leaving a one-star review about how that thick forged steel clamp and screw "just broke" on the first try or twisted/bent/stripped out. This got the job done with some sockets and some ingenuity. It is NOT made for heavy trucks. If you are working on 1/2 tons or cars I think it would be great. 3/4 tons on up, spend a bit more and get a heavier tool with a larger selection of cups. My 3/4 ton is done. I got it figured out, but I don't think the tool will live through another job. It's a bit sprung and pretty much used up. But the money I saved over what a shop wanted still makes it a great buy ! ... show more
