  • Awesome router (and performance) for the price, but may not be suitable for those needing "advanced" features
Style: 1x Gigabit LAN ports
I've owned this router for about a week now and it is fantastic. The OnHub was replacing an aging Linksys E4200 from 2011. Recently, the E4200 had been causing all sorts of video streaming issues, bandwidth problems, and needed to be rebooted about once a week to maintain any sort of acceptable performance whatsoever. After setting up the OnHub, I was rather amazed with the difference in performance. Streaming video is crystal clear, where before it had often been blurry and pixelated. Speed tests from my smartphone or computer show speeds several Mbps higher than what I technically pay for from my ISP (and probably 20-30 Mbps above what I was getting with the old router). Setup was a breeze. Simply download the "Google On" app and plug in the router. The app finds the device and obtains a unique setup code from it via audio signal. My phone actually failed to obtain the code via audio (not sure why), so I had to look on the bottom of the router and enter the code manually into the app. Once that's done, OnHub checks for an internet connection and prompts you for a network name (SSID) and password. Networks are automatically secured with WPA2. In terms of setup, that's it! I named the network the same as my old network and gave it the same password as well, so existing devices automatically connected to the OnHub. The transition was pretty much seamless. One thing I really like about this router is that it shows real-time or historical bandwidth usage per-device (something I haven't seen in other routers, though I haven't looked recently). So, if I'm seeing reduced performance, I can easily trace which devices are using the most bandwidth. It's also possible to prioritize a single device over the rest on the network with a single tap, which could be nice in such scenarios. I don't foresee needing that feature, because the router is just that fast. Guest networks are built-in, and you can set up one or more networks for visitors to your home. The app also has a nice feature to share the guest network password (also secured with WPA2) directly to your contacts. OnHub goes a step further and allows you to share specific devices with one or more guest networks. For example, if you have a Chromecast or a home media server, you could choose to make those available to a guest network such that visitors to your home can stream content to your TV or access your library of movies and music--all without exposing any sensitive data (e.g. network hard drives) to guests. There are a few things potential buyers should note: - The router does lack some advanced features like port-range triggering, DMZ, DDNS, parental controls, etc. This feels like an acceptable compromise for me, but won't be for everyone. - There is no web interface. All configuration happens via an Android or iOS app provided by Google (i.e. Google On). One advantage here is that you can administrate your router from anywhere--no need to figure out how to set up remote access yourself. - You can't customize your LAN subnet--it's preset by OnHub. For instance, all of my IP addresses are 192.168.86.x. Not sure if that is the same for everyone, or if the device picks a random subnet during setup. - OnHub has only one LAN port and one WAN port. If you have more than a single wired device on your network, you'll need to purchase a gigabit switch as well. Amazon generally has good combo deals for this exact purpose. One issue I did uncover is the router's built-in speed test. From the app, you can ask the router to initiate a speed test to ensure you're getting the most from your ISP. I pay for 50Mbps from my ISP, but OnHub's internal speed test only reported me getting about 3Mbps. Running a third-party speed test from my phone or PC showed results of around 50-60Mbps, so clearly Google has some work to do here. So far, I don't see this affecting anything in the every-day workings of the router itself, so just be aware that this particular feature is presently useless. Overall, I'm totally satisfied with the OnHub. I don't find myself missing any features from my old Linksys, and I know that Google has done a bit of "future proofing" to this device so they can enable some newer standards down the road. I'm excited to see what that opens up. This router won't be for everyone--especially those folks who like to install custom firmware (e.g. DD-WRT, Tomato, etc), but for most people, it will probably do the trick nicely. I'm a software engineer and don't miss the more advanced stuff. I also suspect that Google will continue adding features and options as the OnHub ecosystem grows, so if I find myself needing a feature down the road, chances are that it just might be available by then. ... show more

  • A New Wave of Connectivity: My Experience with the ASUS SRT-AC1900 AC1900 OnHub Google WiFi Router
Style: 1x Gigabit LAN ports
Having navigated through the dense market of routers, I chanced upon the ASUS SRT-AC1900 AC1900 OnHub Google WiFi Router, and to say it's been a breath of fresh air would be an understatement. From its sleek aesthetics to its superior performance, this router has become the focal point of my home's internet ecosystem. Unboxing and Setup: The unboxing experience was akin to unwrapping a meticulously designed gadget. The simplistic yet elegant packaging beckoned me into a realm of superior connectivity. The setup was a breeze. With just a few taps on the Google On app on my smartphone, I had the router up and running. The process was intuitive, requiring no technical prowess, making it a boon for individuals who find themselves at odds with technology. Performance: The router’s performance has been nothing short of stellar. Streaming videos and online gaming, which were once marred by incessant buffering and lag, are now smooth operations. The OnHub effortlessly caters to multiple devices, ensuring optimal bandwidth distribution. The real-time bandwidth usage per device is a feature that stands out, allowing for better management of my network. Even in a congested apartment block, the congestion-sensing antenna works tirelessly to ensure a robust connection. Advanced Features: The ASUS OnHub, though simple to use, doesn’t shy away from offering advanced features. The guest network setup, prioritizing devices with a single tap, and the seamless transition from my old network were features that resonated with me. However, it lacks some advanced configurations like VPN service, port-range triggering, and custom firmware support which might deter the tech-savvy. Pros + User-friendly Setup: The Google On app simplifies the setup process, making it a hassle-free experience. + Stellar Performance: The router optimizes the bandwidth ensuring crystal clear streaming and online gaming without a hitch. + Guest Network Features: Setting up guest networks and sharing specific devices with guests is a thoughtful feature. + Real-time Bandwidth Monitoring: A commendable feature for bandwidth management. + Automatic Updates: The router stays updated with the latest security features, a significant plus for a peace of mind. Cons: - Lack of Advanced Configurations: Tech-savvy individuals might find the lack of certain advanced configurations limiting. - Single LAN Port: With just one LAN port, a separate gigabit switch purchase is almost inevitable for wired connections. - DNS Configuration Issue: Encountered intermittent stalls in requests, though it was resolved by using the ISP's DNS. - Dependence on Smartphone App: The reliance on a smartphone app for setup and management may not appeal to everyone, and the need for a Google account might deter some. Long-term Reliability: As of my one-month tenure with the ASUS OnHub, the router has held its ground, offering consistent performance. However, there have been mentions of devices preferring 2.4 GHz band over the 5 GHz, and some issues with iOS devices connectivity over time. These are areas I’ll keep an eye on as I continue to use the OnHub. Conclusion: The ASUS SRT-AC1900 AC1900 OnHub Google WiFi Router is a remarkable piece of technology that bridges the gap between novice users and a strong, reliable internet connection. Its simplicity, coupled with its robust performance, makes it a worthy investment for a hassle-free internet experience. While it may not cater to the whims of a tech aficionado seeking advanced configurations, it more than serves its purpose for the average user seeking a reliable, strong, and easy-to-manage internet connection. ... show more
