  • Mesh, VPN, Parental Controls...just works...
This replaced an old Apple Airport. I'm not a network expert...and I was a little concerned about whether this configuration would turn into a "learning opportunity" which I'd just as soon avoid. I chose to go to wifi6 and hoped that this new Asus setup would survive as long as my 10-year-old Apple router. The firmware updates evidently have solved a lot of problems...I had read earlier reviews. To net it out, the mesh network, VPN with exception management, Internet failover, and parental controls all work well. I had expected one or two of those features to be good and the others to be bad and require other point solutions. I did the initial set up in October for the first RT-AX92U and it was not hard...it took a little time to get it where I wanted it but initial setup and config was easy. Immediately, I was better off from an access point perspective than the old Apple router but, honestly, that was expected since this bit of kit is 10 years newer. I then got a second b/c the basement has horrible network access (tile floor, double layer brick, plaster walls, etc). Second mesh unit setup with drop-dead easy. I then wanted to add the security of a whole house VPN but with exceptions to those VPN connections in the devices (so that Apple TV and other devices stayed "at the home IP address" and others went through the VPN) so I got the GT-AX11000 which connects to the modem and the smaller RT-AX92Us mesh routers are "downstream". It wasn't cheap but it did exactly what I wanted it to do...so fair enough. NordVPN was an easy setup and integrated nicely with the Asus firmware. The Asus partner team must do good work because there were good videos to help me get the configuration done. I also set up a failover network which works as well but unfortunately not with the VPN setup (so it's a manual swap based on how I've set it up but not too bad) and I think the problem lies in the fact that NordVPN prevents the "ping" that identifies whether the network is functioning from going through. Would be nice if the firmware on the router allowed for the Ping to go around the VPN...and then again, maybe that is possible and I didn't figure it out...again...not a network expert. Parental controls as well are better here than anything else I've tried. I have one RT-AX92U in the basement and one upstairs and was impressed by the difference having one upstairs makes reaching security cameras and the front yard. With 2 kids and 2 parents "working from home" we've got 1,000 problems but wifi, VPN security, and parental controls are not among them. To finish out the review, we're planning to get yet one more of the smaller mesh RT-AX92Us for a detached garage office. It's 200 feet away from the main router and through a few tons of plaster and brick. That will all run of the same GT-AX11000 main unit and allow someone to walk from one end of the house to another without missing a beat. I was sad to see Apple exit the router business and while their UI would have surely been different, I don't think they could have done much better what Asus has done. Update: have added additional router to the garage office, a 20-port gigabit switch, wired backbone for all the mesh routers and ethernet connections to the biggest bandwidth hogs in the house. The wiring to the bandwidth hogs was not really needed but it did slightly lower the ping for video games. We also got fiber to our neighborhood and added an uninterruptible power supply. The result is that for devices that don’t have VPN connections they are very close to gigabit speeds. For devices that run through the wi-fi they consistently hit 500-600mbps anywhere in the house or yard. Definitely a good product and foundational for really good service. ... show more

  • Great little three channel AiMesh router
This is a great little three channel AiMesh router. I'm using it as an outdoor AiMesh node, I left the antennas folded up and put it in a small sealed plastic enclosure that's screwed in to the side of my house. This provides a better wireless signal to several wifi enabled devices that I have around my yard. The only issue I ran in to with it when setting it up as an AiMesh node is that initially when it connected via AiMesh it would only connect using the 2.4ghz as the backhaul which made it basically unusable as a node. However, I was able to trigger a firmware update on it from the main router in the update firmware section after connecting it as an AiMesh node and after that firmware update was complete it then reconnected to AiMesh over 5ghz and has been working fine ever since. If you plan to use this as an AiMesh node you'll likely need to go through the same process of connecting it as an AiMesh node and then triggering a firmware update on it from the update firmware interface on your main router. There seems to be some sort of bug in the stock firmware that prevents it from using 5ghz as the backhaul connection, but an update of the firmware fixes that. ... show more

  • Asus RT-AX92U My Network intergration did not work!
Excited to get a Asus RT-AX92U! Got the single router. The software and features have many things I really liked! I have a NetGear network with a X6 router and two Orbi (connect to any router) extenders. My plan was to integrate the Asus RT-AX92U in as the main router and gradually replace the extenders as I could afford it. I spent 30+ hours over four days trying to get everything working in the new environment. I kept randomly dropping devices ( I have 32 devices) from the router. The wifi would just go away for about 5 min. I finely went back to the PC desk where the router sits on top with nothing within 12". While I was there the wifi dropped! I looked up and saw the router with no lights but the power light on! Then it restarted again. I contacted support via email and was told to move the Asus RT-AX92U to a cooler room! (Ambient temp in the room is at 70-71 degrees.) Because sometimes network activity causes it to run to hot. (I had noticed the unit was pretty warm most of the time.) SO, I placed the router on a small box to allow better circulation. That fixed the heat problem, I think. BUT, then the wifi would totally drop out and there was no response from the router software even on the hardwired PC, and all the lights were on, but no activity! The only option was to power off and on. Support had me disable everything AX11 and change all bandwidths to 40mb only! (Could not use 80 or 160??) Still had issues of wifi going away for another 6 hours playing with router software. One thing that totally amazed me was the ability to plug a UML290 3G Verizon air card into the USB2 port and actually connect and provide internet to the router! That and the Lifetime Aiprotection Security by Trend Micro were the selling points that put me over the top to purchase the product! But it would not integrate into my network, so its going back! The two pack Asus RT-AX92U AX6100 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Mesh routers in a stand alone environment will probably work great! BUT, beware some older devices may have trouble connecting to the AX11, so you may have to disable it to use them. Now I am trying to find a reasonable priced replacement for the Asus RT-AX92U, that will work with my Netgear environment and Legacy devices. I will revisit ASUS routers sometime in the future because their software interface with the router is very good! ... show more

  • Power little router Power little router
This little router is powerful for my needs. I'm in a single household with not much Wi-Fi traffic so I can't comment on congested households. The only things I have connected on my Wi-Fi network are my mobile phone, Harmony hub, and sometimes my laptop. Otherwise, everything is is wired to a Lan switch. Via Lan, I have a TV, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, A/V Receiver, Roku, blu-ray player, and sometimes my laptop. As you can see on the picture, I'm getting great wireless speed on my laptop. I'm using an AX connection at 160Mhz. The second picture represents speeds on my mobile phone via an AC/N mixed channel and mixed frequencies. Set-up was no harder than setting up any other router. The only thing that changes from different brands are the interface and features. Speaking of features, disable Smart Connect. You will not get optimal speeds with that feature enabled. Lastly, as you can see from the third picture, it takes up a very small footprint. ... show more

  • Reliable (and fast!!)
I had upgraded my router only two weeks earlier, but that router seemed to want to reboot without being prompted to do so. It was a different well know brand and the technical support from that company left a little to be desired so I returned it to Amazon, Then I ordered this Asus router and was immediately impressed with it speed and ease of setup. That was in February of 2022 and it has been flawlessly preforming since. Currently I have 54 devices connected to it from security cams to tv's and desktops and smart switches etc.. All of my tv viewing is 100% streamed. It integrated with the two existing points of access without any assistance from me. I could not ask for a better experience with a new router. This unit is small in size, but huge in performance. Outdoor cams that previously suffered a weak signal don't have that problem with this router. Like the Asus mobo's and video cards, this RT-AX92U router delivers. ... show more

  • Possibly the best option out there
Though I've only been using it for about 3 weeks, it has so far exceeded my expectations. I do not yet use it for the mesh networking, though I do have an older Asus router plugged in via ethernet running as an AP. One of the reasons I got this one was that I wasn't sure if the signal from one would be good enough downstairs, so I wanted one that could be expanded with a second one meshed or via ethernet. I was expecting the signal strength on this to be the same as the AC router I had been previously running in the same location. The usable Wifi 6 signal from this one is about 30% greater in distance than Wifi 5 of my old one. Also, my old one always had issues running both 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz at the same time and so far this new one has no issues maintaining excellent performance even while 3 devices on my network are only able to use the 2.4 radios. I find the options and UI of this router to be excellent though I am a techie so you may feel like it's too much - but out of the box settings are good as long as you both change the admin password and download the firmware update from Asus and upload it to the router from your computer right away. I spent a lot of time looking at and reading reviews of other routers in this class and was pretty surprised at how many miserable products are out there - even ones that get good reviews from tech blogs/websites. This router is only reviewed on one of those (at the moment). I am grateful I spent the money to get this one. I'm very happy with it and would definitely get it again as well as recommend it to anyone else. Finally, though it's a small, specific detail, I love that I can tell it to use the wps button on the side to instead turn off the led lights on the front - something the family appreciates since this router is visible on top of the fridge in the kitchen and being able turn off the blinkies is great. ... show more

  • 5-star to 1-star review in a few months 5-star to 1-star review in a few months
I've lowered my review from 5-star to 1. I bought a second one of these routers and ran them in a mesh configuration. Once in a while a handful of my devices would retain wifi connection but could not be assigned an IP address so they wouldn't have internet access. A quick reboot on the router would sort it back out, however instead of that happening once in a while it started happening daily or a couple of times a day so I decided to upgrade the firmware. After the firmware update to the newest version, WAN light would be red and the router would state that my ethernet cable is unplugged. If I rolled back the firmware, everything worked again. Asus tech support had me try all types of things to try to resolve with no luck. Finally after phone calls, emails, forms I had to complete, they decided it needs warranty repair. While that is great, they wanted me to be without it for at least 10 days or more while this happened. How about good customer service Asus?? How about you send me a refurbished one and I send this one back in that box? Tech support was based in India and extremely hard to understand on the phone. I haven't had this much pushback and lack of integrity from other brands of electronics, so I'm going to transition all of my Asus laptops and routers to other brands as they become obsolete. Update to this issue: Tech determined mine had failed and they replaced it. When I recieved the new one it did the exact same thing. Red WAN light, "a cable is unplugged" error message. Rolled back the firmware and it works. Great to know that they wasted my time and cost me $30 in shipping for their faulty firmware update. Previous 5-Star review: Quick background; I've owned many Asus products, and this is my 4th router I've had from them. I've liked all but one of their products. Before buying this router I grabbed the AC3200 which was not only a headache to try to set up, but consistently lost internet connectivity. I sent that back and got the RT-AX92U AX6100 instead, and I'm SO glad I did! We currently have over 30 devices running on this router with no issues. Out of the box: It's insanely simple and to the point. You have a router, a power cable, and a network cable. Flip the 4 antenna's up and plug it in. Build & Construction Quality: It's small, almost too small to think it can pack much of a punch, but it's misleading! It almost fits in the palm of my hand and is about the width of a dollar bill. It's fairly heavy for it's size, and the plastic seems thick and durable. In no way at all does anything about this router say that it's poor quality or cheap. Setup: Easy! Once I'd mounted the router to the wall and made my connections I connected to it through the network and it walked me through the setup process. The setup wizard makes it extremely easy to set up for the common user. The advance setup options will take some IT knowledge, but is still relatively easy to set up most features. I was up and running in as little as 5 minutes and had my Lyra Voice and RT-AC68P connected in an AIMesh configuration within another 20 minutes. The router configuration menu is easy to navigate and the user interface is beautiful. Performance: All of my previous setups (even with other leading-brand routers that have since malfunctioned) were in the same locations. I've always had struggles with having to reset/reboot my routers to stop quirky issues in the past such as losing wifi randomly, losing an AIMesh node connection, or losing internet randomly. I haven't had a single issue with any of these since running this router. Besides that, I almost don't need AIMesh as the signal reaches clear across my house and downstairs pretty well without it. My home is 2200sq ft with a basement and router is upstairs on one side of the home, and devices on the opposite side of the home downstairs now have a solid full signal whereas they used to struggle to even keep connection at times. This was before adding AIMesh. I now only use the AIMesh to help push the signal even further to my garage. I have 100/100 internet and it pushes near these speeds through wifi anywhere in the home with AIMesh (89/93). Features: The modem sports all kinds of features, many which I either will not use, or some I do not how to use. For now I'm using the parental filters for my kid's tablet and laptop, and the firewall. I plan to figure out the VPN and put it to use as well. I absolutely love the user friendly mobile app, it gives you complete control over your network and every device on it from you phone. Overall: By far the best modem purchase I have ever made. I've even tried other brands with no luck.. this router will not disappoint! I believe it is ahead of it's time and may still be relevant and in use 5 years from now, which is a lot of life for something in the tech world. UPDATE: Owning and using this router for a week now and the only issue I'm running into is after renaming my devices according to their MAC address the router starts to rename them back to what they originally were at random. I had this same issue with my past Asus routers as well and seems it still hasn't been fixed. It's by no means a dealbreaker, I just like to be OCD and organized. For example; I rename the device which is automatically populated as ECS39284 to "Living Room Smart Outlet - Lamp", and a an hour or day later it will be named ECS39284 again. I still stand at a 5 star rating for this router as it is doing it's main job, and doing it very well! ... show more

  • Fast, long range, but only if you use mesh channel as network node
Bought this a few months ago. Amazing range and speed for the price but with a caveat. You only get those super high speeds if you set the router up as a stand alone unit and setup the high speed mesh channel as a wireless channel for your devices. If you set this thing up as a mesh network with another router that high speed channel will be dedicated to internal router-to-router communication and will not be available for use to your devices. The high speed mesh channel is not automatically available for use as a network. You will have to google how to enable that for this specific router model. It was fairly simple to do. As far as range and speed: I just got google fiber. Via LAN connection I am getting 950mbit/sec through this router. Wireless up close through high speed mesh network gets me about 550mbit/sec. From 55 feet away on the high speed mesh network I still get about 120mbit/sec speeds. You could cover a mansion with a single unit if you placed it in the middle. Those speeds at a 55 foot radius through multiple walls are amazing for a $230 router. ... show more
