First board I had of this was a flop ( failed dram dimm) I had gotten it from amazon resale to save some coin. I guess someone returned it for failure but didn't address the issue. I decided to try it again. Used again, but the price was around $100 higher so I assumed the unit was in much better condition. It surely were and it looked as if it had never even been used. So far this board holds up. It can run stable ddr5 8000 MT/S but I wouldn't take it above unless you have a good binned chip. Crossing my fingers because if this fails I'm moving onto the ASRock z790i Lighting.

I wanted to love this motherboard, and I did. Right up until I inserted a Gigabyte Aorus PCIE5 10000, PCIe 5.0 SSD and got 3.0 speeds. Changing a BIOS bifurcation setting allows 4.0 but we got this board specifically for testing 5.0 SSDs and it doesn't work. Returned the first and got a second. Same deal. I've had to amend this review because I finally got to a top-level tech who told me about a switch on the riser board with the front panel connections that comes set to PCIe 3.0. That needs to be set to Auto to provide PCIe 5.0. Previously, three interactions with tech support mentioned nothing about this switch and one told me to return the board. I feel bad about that but... Now I love the board. It's compact, has Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2x2 (20GBps) on board and is perfect for our testing.

I picked this up from the Amazon Warehouse. Like I always say, it is either hit or miss with them and open/used items. This one was a hit albeit it shipped in a brown box only with an "Amazon Warehouse" sticker on it and did not include the original packaging. It did seem to have most of the original pack-in items though and looked to be in decent shape. As for the board itself, I wanted to use it to build my daughter a small, compact PC to play Hogwarts, World of Warcraft and some other smaller games for Christmas. Installation was easy as I used a Hyte Revolt 3 and after BIOS update everything was a go. The board quality is decent if not remarkable and like all other Z790 ITX boards, they top out at 10+1 phases so if you're looking to get this to do some serious overclocking this is not the board for you for many reasons. I do like the 2-DIMM design as it will allow you hit 8000+ on memory. Testing individual sticks, I was able to post up to 8800 on slot A and 8600 on slot B using a binned SP115 13900KS + G.Skill 8000 A-die Hynix sticks. For my daughter's build, I went with a 12500 and an Asus 3070 KO edition paired with 32GB (2x16GB) of G.Skill Flare 6000 memory along with a Samsung Pro 980 1TB SSD. Unfortunately, while my daughter said she wanted a computer to play Hogwarts and stuff, she actually wanted a gaming laptop instead so I had to return it and gave her an Acer gaming laptop for Christmas instead but the Strix z790i worked fine while I had it. It is a bit on the pricier side and is the most expensive of all the Z790i ITX boards.

Terrible layout, M.2 sandwich just makes things complicated. Also poor compatibility with AIOs, mine just barely fit and even the it was so tight it scratched the VRM shroud. Worked well until I decided to upgrade from an i5 to a i7. It stopped working. I only swapped the cpu, installed perfectly but the MB didn’t like it. I checked but no bent pins or thermal paste on the contacts, I was very careful. Fans and lights would come on but no diagnostic beeps and the diagnostic QLeds would not work, tried to force an error by starting without cpu or ram or vga but nothing, led would not come on. Tried clearing CMOS, flashed BIOS but would not take it, kept failing. Took it all apart and installed components one at a time. Nothing worked. I am contemplating RMAing it but I’m reading all the horror stories here but I don’t have a choice I’m past the return window. Edit: updating to one star. I RMA the first board Asus determined it was a bad board and I appreciate them making it right but this a review for the product and it’s terrible. The replacement board I got worked fine for a week then similar thing happened but this time it first started turning off and on. Sometimes it would make it to the BIOS other times all the way to Windows before turning off then on until it wouldn’t turn on anymore. Fans would spin but no post and no diagnostic leds. Tested all my components on a spare motherboard and they all work perfectly passing stress test with no problems. Just bad quality motherboard.

I've been building PC since the days of dial up internet and had my fair share of quirky boards and peripherals, but this board left me nothing but disdain for ASUS. I truly believe that I'll be avoiding their brand across the board, from motherboards, graphics cards etc. I purchased this board and I noticed the the circular seal on the box was doubled. The thought entered my head that it was previously open and resealed, but honestly, if it worked I won't care, as long as I had a working product with a warranty I'd be golden. After the components were installed and the board powered up, it took a solid 15 to 25 seconds to post and show the bios. This is not the exception, this is norm throughout all my efforts. I first flashed the bios to the latest version and tried installing windows. The PC would give me the BSOD with a few seconds. I tried running a memtest86 and everytime the PC got between 70% - 80% the PC would restart itself and take me back to the bios. I tried one stick of ram at a time and in different slots ... same results. I bought another fresh pair of ram from a different manufacture .... same results. I decided to call Asus and escalate my concerns. After some rudimentary exercises like power off/on, reset cmos etc I was told to RMA the board on my dime and they'll ship it back to me on their dime. I was hesitant at first but when the rep told me it will be about three weeks before I get the board back, I had to push back and refuse to RMA it. I simply returned it to the merchant and bought another one thinking that I just got a dud. The second board came and the first one was returned. Oddly enough, the second board was also double sealed as though it was open before and then resealed. I proceeded to install it and went through the same issues as the first board. I spend about 10 days off and on playing in the bios, changing ram and using only the bare minimum components I needed to get the PC going but nothing worked. I'll have to return this once again and get something totally different. All my components shows up well in the bios. CPU temps are between 39~45 Celsius. CPU is an i7 13th gen unlocked. I'm using a class B power supply with 150% of the head room I need power wise. Nvidia 4070 card w/ (2) 16gb sticks of ddr5 ram, all compatible with the board. especially after installing the latest bios. I honestly gave this a fair shake. As an update: Turns out my brand new i7 CPU was the culprit. After swapping graphics card, swapping hard drives, swapping ram, swapping motherboards .... I finally swapped processors. Intel, you had one job!

This board is fantastic, incredible build quality, bios is very easy to navigate through and the sale price isn’t through the roof expensive compared to other itx boards in this class. HOWEVER there are two things that may make this a tough sell for others looking to make this purchase. 1. The stacked NVMe is a bit cumbersome and very tall. This makes it incredibly difficult, if not impossible to source large air cooling solutions that are compatible with this configuration. The Noctua u9s fits but just barely. 2. My board did not include the supporting pads to prevent the NVMe pcb from bending after the heatsink is installed. Thankfully I had an old Asus board that had a couple left over but it’s important to note that you may or may not receive pads with this board. Other than that, this board is fantastic and HIGHLY recommended. Buy with confidence my friends.

The motherboard is great and high quality, performance is good except for overheating the CPU due to a slight bend and thus a hotspot without paste. I would highly recommend buying frame for the CPU in order to avoid ruining it. Another thing to consider is the tolerances of the motherboard in relation to the GPU and other cables as well as the cooler, very tight fit

I paired this motherboard with a 12600k and an MSI 4080. Before my gpu came in, I ran the new build off of the CPU’s integrated graphics and all was well. After installing my gpu, the display output stopped on my Thunderbolt ports. After spending weeks back and forth with ASUS tech support, I was finally informed that because this motherboard lacks a DisplayPort IN port, I can’t output video through Thunderbolt with a gpu installed. For a motherboard with “gaming” in the name, that was a disappointment. Aside from this it is a decent option, as it does offer a lot for an itx mobo. If connecting your displays through Thunderbolt is something you need, or might want to do in future, you simply have to look elsewhere. For everyone else, this is a solid choice for an itx build that isn’t going to draw over 200w through its cpu socket!
