abunda_amazon_reviews After owning for a few months I cannot recommend this router. Notice that 2.4ghz clients would have frequent internet drop-outs. 5Ghz working perfectly. I always update to latest firmware and still 2.4ghz drops. I reboot router in the morning, when I come home from work, 2.4ghz dead... but 5ghz fine. Do a google search and find many with similar issues. And remember, there are likely MANY MORE who returned these units without writing any reviews. 2) If there are NO issues with these routers, then why after reporting first the failures of the RT-AC86U (I bought and returned two in two weeks) , It was suggested I upgrade to a RT-AC88U..... which I did and it failed after two weeks! The customer loyalty dept then suggested I then upgrade to the RT-AX88U which would have been an additional $120+........ I suggested that for all the wasted time I spent on the phone and hours going through failed suggestions on how to correct the problems plus 3 trips in Returns to UPS that Asus pay the difference if they think this was the only way to supply me with a reliable, working Router. I purchased a RT-AC86U as the Master AI Mesh.... 7 Hours of Re-Booting & Calls to Asus finally confirmed it had Hardware Issues that could not be resolved, as it just would not AIMesh with the 68U. I had the replacement 86U in a matter of days and I then found the on board Switches for the Wi-Fi and LED's would not work. It was returned too, but instead I thought a better model would resolve all. I ordered the RT-AC88U instead and for the first 2 weeks, it was great, and I loved the 8 onboard Ethernet Ports. Then one morning we found none of our Smart Home Alexa Devices would respond. Initially thinking Amazon's Server was down, and I started checking and actually found the 2.4G radio in the 88U was not transmitting! Called Asus and they had me Re-Boot and insure I had the latest Firmware (I did) and it started working. Hung up the phone and thanked the CSR. Just a Hiccup? No! Within 5 Minutes the 2.4G was again Dead. Called Asus back and after numerous other repair attempts the CSR I spoke with actually said " Yes... We are aware of the 2.4G Radio issues. You will need to return it to the Factory for Warranty Repair"..... Thanks, No.... I returned it to Amazon and I am still in need of a replacement Router. I did see other reviews going back 2 years with the same issue, but I dismissed them as one-offs., customer error issues. I was wrong. Evidently Asus is well aware of this, yet they are still sending out these without correcting the problems. Is every one defective? Not apparently so, but enough are that I am adding my disappointment in Asus to the list of poor reviews. It is well powered and allowed the wireless signal to reach much farther than my old router. It has worked flawlessly from when it arrived until about 3 weeks ago. The 2.4 GHz seemed to stop working for a couple of hours. My computers use the 5.0 GHz network and my kids iPads use the 2.4 GHz, so I did not notice it until they complained. The 2.4 GHz has now completely died and I am working with their technical support via email. The good news is I can switch most of the devices over to the 5.0 GHz until we get it fixed. I will post an update after I get it fixed. Update 5-31-2017: Prior to sending it back for the 2.4 GHz issue, the 5.0 GHz started having the same issue where it will completely go away for up to 10 minutes. ASUS provided an RMA, to fix both the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz issues. The receipt provided by ASUS shows that they fixed the 2.4 GHz and mentioned nothing about the 5.0 GHz issue. Now that it is returned, the 5.0 GHz has stopped working. That was a waste of time! I am on the phone with them right now for another RMA. The last RMA took 3 weeks to get my router back because their shipping method was the cheapest one available to them. It took over a week just to get it there! I took the brand name of ASUS as a good quality router to replace my current router, but I believe I made a mistake. I have had nothing but problems since I took this thing out of the box. The quick setup failed to work, it would fail to load the web page completely. I would log-in, and could not view all the options on the admin page. I would finally click on something and would get kicked out and have to log in again, this would repeatedly occur over and over again. I finally resorted to calling support. They told me I had to have it plugged into my cable modem for it to work properly, which I did and had the same result. The support tech then put me on hold for 15 mins until his shift ended at 6:30PM PST, what crap! I finally resorted to resetting to factory defaults and used the advanced set up. This time it worked, but would not let me change the network from 192.168.1.0/24. I could get the admin web page to load and make some configuration changes. I had most things set up and working however, the 2.4ghz wireless would fail to enable. I even tried both upgrading firmware and downgrading firmware with the same result. My baby's webcam uses 2.4Ghz so I am no longer able to use it. And my e-mail to the Executive Offices (ACI-CEO_Feedback@asus.com) asking when they will resolve the problem have gone unanswered. The only bright spot in all these returns was that Amazon could not have been more supportive and bent over backwards to try to help resolve these issues for me.

The good news is I can switch most of the devices ...
Initial capability was extremely impressive. If you are researching for a new router, please consider this review and make sure you have a backup router for when this happens.

Not recommended!
Not impressed. I was able to change the LAN network from 192.168.1.0/24 after the firmware change. ** The admin web page not loading and getting kicked out repeatedly. ** Not being able to change the LAN address ** The 2.4Ghz wifi radio not working ** The crappy phone support I received I would not recommend this router to anyone. I should add I am a senior network administrator and have designed and built both large scale enterprise and small business networks. I have literally configured more than a thousand network devices and this one is one of the worst I have tried.
