  • Easy to use external Blue-ray Player
This is an easy to use external Blue-ray Player. Works great with my Desktop computer

  • Great addition to my iMac
I have a mid-2007 iMac with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor running Mac OS X 10.7.3. My internal superdrive died, so I decided to take the plunge and get a Blu-Ray writer. Since I don't do a whole lot of burning, I purchased the ASUS Blu-Ray writer (SBW-06D2X-U) mostly based on price. I also bought the Verbatim 97344 25 GB 6x Blu-ray Single-Layer Recordable Disc BD-R LTH (Low to High), 20-Disc Spindle. They worked perfectly. I simply plugged in the Blu-Ray writer, inserted a blank Blu-Ray disc, and burned with Toast 11 for Mac. I did not bother to even see what was on the CD-ROM that came with the drive, so I don't know if the included software is Windows only or if there is also a Mac version, but in any case I did not need it. It comes with a cable that has 1 mini USB connector on one end that plugs into the Blu-Ray writer and 2 USB connectors on the other end that plug into your computer--I presume this is because the device needs to draw enough current, but the upside is that there is no power cord to hassle with, so as long as you can spare 2 USB ports (or don't mind exchanging peripherals), this is great! Note that the USB cord is only 18 inches long, so if you plan to place the burner farther from your computer, you may need to buy 2 USB cables each with a female and male end. I saw some other reviews for other products where the buyers stated problems with the Low to High Verbatim discs with Blu-Ray writers, but they seem to work OK for me and my current setup. Note that I have only burned 1 Blu-Ray data disc so far, and if I experience problems, I will update my review. The device comes with a goofy stand which you don't have to use, as it comes with a rubber padding so you can lay it down on a desk. Bottom line: I am happy with this product and would recommend it to others. ... show more

  • Just about perfect.
Bought this in April of 2013. At the time my PC (new at the time) had windows 8. It was plug and play. No issues what so ever and it complimented my ASUS ET2701 PC. I continued to use the drive thru the Windows 8.1 update and now the same PC has been updated to Windows 10. (Actually I have a dual boot with Windows 8.1 and 10) I still have no issues what so ever and it has NEVER burned a coaster. I've lost the original dual USB cable, but Have no issues ever with a decent cable I have. I am updating my PC and since my ASUS only has a BD ROM/ DVD Burner, I was looking into what it would take to install this drive in place of the one that came with my PC. So I carefully opened it up to see what drive is in mine. The unit I have has a PANASONIC UJ260 drive. I will am considering a second one of these (hack my old one and install it in PC) and keep the new one for portable duty. My other thought is to buy a Panasonic UJ260 drive. In the last two years, there does not seem to be a lot of headway in optical drive performance, so this drive is still relevant. Highly recommend, but be warned your mileage may vary, I believe this is due to software and PC configurations more than anything else. This hardware is solid. ... show more

  • Great product, setup a bit intensive due to sys issues
This was a little tricky getting the system to recognize the hardware. I had to rip the installation disk that came with it to a USB drive and direct the system to install the driver from that file & I had to install a patch of some kind that came on the disk as well. After that it’s been pretty reliable. I’ve played blu rays & DVD’s from several regions without issue. I use the Leawo Blu Ray player software (Free) on Windows 10 system for Blu ray discs, & both USB lines are connected to USB 3.0 ports. I had to use an old laptop to copy the installation CD to USB. Probably not the best product for someone not tech savvy. I had googled the issue of the system not recognizing the hardware & there was no remedy I could find. Can’t load a CD onto a computer if the drive isn’t recognized & there’s no other CD-rom capable drive. The software couldn’t be found on ASUS website either but not sure if it’s changed since I bought this in 2017. If you have the same issue, try what I tried. If you are not tech savvy, find someone who is and see if they can help :-) ... show more

  • Read this first if you want to use the drive with Windows XP
I purchased the drive to use with my Windows XP computer under the assumption that it would work since Windows XP is on the list of approved operating systems for this drive. However, I found that the Asus drive worked fine with my CD's and DVD's but would not read my Blu-Ray discs. Asus does not provide drivers for any operating system other than Windows 8 and the Asus product support FAQ is a joke. There are FAQ for DVD and CD problems but not Blu-Ray. According to the support page, you can only contact Asus directly for problems with their computers, not the optical drives. The solution that I found online is to run a google search for UDF Reader 2.5. Download the file from the videohelp website and unzip it. Then right click on thdudf.inf and choose Install. Next reboot your computer and you should be able to see the file structure of the Blu-Ray disc. However, my player (Nero 12 Blu Ray Player) still can not read from the drive. Note that software to play the Blu-Ray discs is not included with the drive. You will need to either purchase the software that you need or find another way to play the discs such as modifying VideoLAN. The Asus disc drive does come with Power2Go7 software to burn discs as well as TurboEngine which is supposed to increase the rate of transfer of data from the drive. However, TurboEngine has not been tested with Windows XP and you will receive an warning advising you against installing the software for this reason. Overall, I am very disappointed with this drive. The product description specifically notes that it works with Windows XP but this is not the case without the user needing to make undocumented changes to the operating system. Furthermore, the support from Asus is ridiculously non-existent. Drivers for any operating system other than Windows 8 are not available. I would not recommend this drive for these reasons even though it does work just find with DVD's and CD's. ... show more
