  • Great set of knives for everyday use
Are these Chef Gordon Ramsey worthy? No. But are they great for normal people? Absolutely! Let’s start with the holder. Most knife holders have the knives at an angle with takes up more counter space and few kitchens have counter space to spare. This set is straight up and down and just big enough to fit the set, so it has a tiny counter footprint (see photo next to canister set). Now for the thing I’m obsessed with— the scissors and scissor hole! (I really need more excitement in my life, don’t I?) I use scissors all the time in the kitchen, which means getting them out of the drawer. This is so handle to have a scissor hole in the knife holder! Need them? Boom! They’re right there! And a bottle opener IN the scissors? Are you kidding me? And between the handles, those jagged teeth? Those are for opening jars, cracking nuts or even cracking crab legs. Every house needs a pair of “Kitchen Only” scissors and now I have them. Now for the knives— Four knives. Basic. The smallest is a little big for a paring knife but it works. Then you have the butcher knife, pie knife and veggie knife. I have no idea if that’s what they’re called, but that’s what I use them for. They are strong enough and sharp enough and look good. Will they hold their sharpness? Time will tell, but I have a sharpener, so it won’t matter to me; I’ll just sharpen them if needed. I love the curved blades. They make cutting easier and faster without lifting the blade up completely. They have a sleek modern look and appear to be made well without grooves to trap bacteria. Another nice feature is the ergonomically design of the handles. They fit comfortably in your hand. Look at the photo of them laying on the counter. The only con I have, and I’m nitpicking here, is the weight of the handles. They are very lightweight compared to wooden handles. It doesn’t change how they function; it just feels different. I’ve been using these for a week though and I’m used to the weight. Overall, definitely five stars. Inexpensive, very functional, classy looks and well made. Great gift for someone starting their first home or anyone just needing a matching set of knives that say “Look at me! I’m not a chef, but I sure do cook!” ... show more

  • Decent knife block with good quality knives
This is a really great knife set, they come very sharp and are easy to sharpen as needed. I like the variety of knives and the kitchen shears, those are always needed. You receive a total of four knives and one pair of kitchen shears. I’ve researched other knife blocks and some have a sharpener built in, this does not but it’s still a nice quality knife block. This is a good value for the money spent. Additionally the entire top of the knife block is a set of straight openings which means you can place the knives wherever they fit. You don’t have to search around for the correct slot. The knives are easy to clean. I always wash them by hand instead of using the dishwasher as that dulls the blade. Additionally, I do feel that the block is fairly light, I wish it would have been a little heavier to prevent any knocking into it and falling over. I feel like the handles of fake wood could look a little bit better and that’s why this only got 4 stars but overall this is a good knife block. ... show more

  • Great for the money
So...I'm rating this 5 stars, not because these are the best knives out there, but because for the price they are a great value. The kit comes with an 7" "kitchen knife" - like a small butcher knife with a slightly curved edge, and 8" "slicing" knife, and 8" chef's knife, and a 5" "utility knife"". Of these, the "kitchen knife" is a style that I haven't personally used much before, but have seen used in Asian cooking shows. I really like the size - it seems like a perfect all purpose chopping knife. The chef's knife would be - to me - a more commonly used all purpose knife. The slicing knife is maybe a bit less useful than these other two. Maybe it would work best as a deboning knife. The utility knife is what I think of as a paring knife. Also comes with some kitchen shears, and a drying/storage block. Obviously this isn't the world's most expensive knife set. The blades aren't full tang. There are machining marks visible under the coating, from where the edge was cut into the blade, and the wood pattern on the handles - while it looks decent - doesn't quite look like real wood. I don't know that the shears with withstand a lot of force. Tried it out on an old, shriveled lemon - and they sliced great. Not surprising really. Any new knife should be able to. You'll want to be able to sharpen these (true for all knives), but the one I used was still sharp after slicing the lemon (very thin) and cutting through a milk jug a few times. The block holds the blades securely, and seems balanced. It has a soft foam on the bottom which keeps it from wiggling. The slots on top which holds the blades aren't really. Overall, if you are looking for an affordable knife set that'll do the job - this will. I got this to outfit my kid's college apartment - but I like the "kitchen knife" enough that I'm going to find one of those to add to my personal collection(which has some very nice high quality german steel knives). ... show more
