  • Better than I expected!
Nice instrument for the price. I've played guitar and banjo for over 50 years, but have always wanted one of these 6-string banjos. I thought it would be a good fit for certain styles of music where a regular banjo doesn't really fit. But none of our local music shops carried them. They had to be ordered (bought) and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something I wasn't sure I was going to like or use. So I shopped around online, and this one had several good reviews from people who have played stringed instruments for a long time, so I ordered it. The price was great, so I figured I couldn't go far wrong even if I ended up not liking it. First off, it came 4 days sooner than I expected it, which was a nice surprise. Well packaged, no damage or dings. I expected to have to do some setup on it, but it came remarkably playable right out of the box. I did not like the strings it came with (electric guitar strings) so I put light 6-string banjo strings on it (LaBelle) and the sound is much more suited to banjo. It stays in tune, the intonation is just about perfect, and the action is about where I want it (low, but not too low.) I play clawhammer banjo, so prefer a backless banjo, but the ones offered online didn't have great reviews or were way too expensive. So I just took the resonator off, which also makes it easier to tighten the head and put some padding (underwear) in the back to mute the tone a bit. The finish/color is also a lot nicer than I thought it would be. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with this instrument. I would buy it again. ... show more

  • Pleasantly Surprised
(Written on April 24) I’ve lived with her for one day and I’m very pleased. This is just an initial impression and I’ll do an update later. For now, she’s more than I expected. I’ve played guitar for more than 50 years. As a busker I’ve found that the banjo attracts more attention (and more money). But I’ve done the whole switching back and forth from guitar to banjo and my fingers get a bit confused. That’s why I decided on getting a banjitar (6-string banjo). As I suspected before arrival, she’s somewhat neck heavy, given the lighter banjo body (even with resonator). Out of the box, she certainly could use a set up which I’ll do later. But she’s very playable immediately. Intonation is almost spot on (just a tiny bit sharp on both E strings) but easily correctable. Action is just minutely higher than 1/8” at the 12th fret. After a day she continues to hold tune very well. I’m really happy with the quality of the tuning machines (I anticipated something cheaper). She sounds a bit dull but not really muted (good enough for busking). With the capo at the 4th fret and above she sounds much more banjo like. I plan on putting Nashville tuned strings on her once they arrive which will likely give her a much brighter and more banjo like sound even without a capo. I also may put on a Gold Tone end piece and a compensated bridge in the long run — upgrades that really aren’t too costly. I don’t know what else to say. She’s much better than I expected and I anticipate that my impression won’t change much over time. The headline says it all: Pleasantly surprised. (Update 4/26/2025) Had her for a day and enjoyed the time playing with her. The neck is nice (and very straight). I don’t particularly like the gloss finish on the back of the neck but that’s my preference. I’ll take some sandpaper too it later to knock down some of that gloss (it just feels tacky to the touch). I also note that the tailpiece is a bit off kilter, enough to bug me but I can live with it. I hope that later changing the tailpiece will correct this. Time for a full setup. If you don’t know how to do this find a professional. I’ve been doing setups on my guitars — both acoustic and electric — for years. First thing is a string change but before that I took off the strings that came with her and tightened the head. In fact, I recommend tightening the head to anyone to do first because there was a lot of sag on the head where the bridge rested. Too much sag and the bridge can eventually tear through the head. That done, I put on a set of Nashville tuning strings. If you don’t know what that is, it’s just using the octave strings of a 12-string guitar set. Got those on and bridge placed where it should be (I marked where it was with pen lines). Didn’t really need to do anything with the neck truss rod but the action was too high. So I adjusted the coordinator rod to bring it down. I checked the intonation and was quite surprised that on both high and low E string she was almost perfect — close enough that I just didn’t fool with it any longer. Again, setup is not a typical DIY thing. If you don’t know what you’re doing find a professional. After everything, especially with the new things, she really sounds like a banjo, even with standard guitar tuning (which is quite high with the Nashville tuning strings). This banjitar is really a lot of fun to play like this and changing the sounds of so many of the songs I already play. I’m looking forward to taking her out for some busking. ... show more

  • Not bad for the price.
Package didn't arrive in the best of shape. However the case was enough to protect it from damage. Banjo played ok. Probably will need some tweaking. But it's not bad for the money.

  • great for the price
I've bought lots of inexpensive instruments before: guitars, violins, ukulele, bass and sometimes they works out other times it is simply a waste of money. I had originally bought another 6 string much better known, more expensive and highly reviewed 6 string banjo, but after I completed the purchase, this banjo popped up. I hadn't seen when I originally searched and was very skeptical but, mostly because it said the resonator is removable, I cancelled my order and bought this one at less than half the price of the other (I didn't have much faith that the more expensive one would be heaps better than one in this price range). I was really surprised when I received this. First off, the finish is great and the tuners, the head the hardware -- the whole thing much above my expectations. I tuned it up and after fiddling around a bunch went to work on it. The fret board is nice, nothing to be done, really. The head needed tightening, which meant I had to remove the resonator -- 4 screws to remove the resonator, easy, I took the resonator hardware completely off as I didn't plan on using it very simple to put back on if I decide -- took a little time, got head nice and tight. Next, I adjusted the neck. Finally, I went after the intonation and played with the bridge placement until I got right on (it arrives set up and it is pretty close) all said about 1.5 hours of fiddling. Big difference. I ordered a set of strings for it and I'm thinking once I swap those out I'll be a very happy camper. It is fun to play and I'm very happy with purchase. ... show more
