So after reading other reviews complaining about opening being difficult and nature of granules not floating, I couldn't resist taking the plunge (pun intended). So on the opening, look for the 3 or 4 little marks near the rim...this is the beginning of the pull tab. Cut and then use your pliers to pull it, it comes fairly easily. Shock is in a bag so well preserved. Re the size of granules, personally I like so the shock gradually goes to the bottom. I use polaris the next day to circulate and everything worked fine. I ordered this product to chlorinate my pool for the long swim season in Texas. Based on price per pound, this is by far the lowest price for chlorine shock powder on the market today. The shipment was delivered by FedEx 4 days after I placed the order. The plastic tub was in good condition with no cracks or leaks. As noted in other reviews, the cover lid can be difficult to remove from the tub. There is a plastic liner holding the lid in place which needs to be removed before the cap can be lifted off by hand. I located a vertical notch with three shorter vertical notches on the container cap. This is the lift tab, which must be cut along the notch with scissors or another sharp tool (flathead screwdriver, short knife blade, etc). After cutting the notch with kitchen scissors, I pried the bottom of the tab out with a scissor blade, then was able to lift the tab with my fingers. I pulled the tab liner from under the edge of the lid by hand the rest of the way around the tub. I removed the lid by hand prying the clamps up along the bottom of the lid all round the tub. Again, a large flathead screwdriver would be helpful for this part, but it is possible to do it by hand. The chlorine powder is enclosed within a plastic bag inside the tub. Once I opened the bag, there was no scoop that I could see. I used a 24 oz. plastic scoop that I had saved from another pool shock product. I broadcast 3 lbs. into the deep end of my pool. The granules started dissolving immediately and the water became cloudy within minutes as the chlorine dispersed into the water. I was surprised at how quickly the granules dissolved, given the other negative comments on slow-dissolving product. This chlorine dissolves faster than any other shock powder I have used from the standard commercial sources such as Chlorox, HTH, Leslie's, Pool Time. I am very pleased with the speed and efficiency of this chlorine powder, and there is no beating the price. I expect this 55# tub to last from April - October for my 22000 gallon pool. Buyers will need to employ some tools to open the lid and bring their own scoop to distribute the powder. ... show more

Don't waste your money. I read some bad reviews, but figured it was a one or two off thing. This product does nothing to clear your pool up. I put 6 pounds of it in 2 days and my pool is constantly getting greener, and now I have bugs because there is so much algae. It literally does NOTHING.

Don't expect a bright pool in 24h. It works after 48h, depending on the size of your pool you may need a little more after 24 hours. I notice the algae come off from the side walls after 24h and everything settles at the bottom after 48h. That's when i attached my pool vacuum cleaner. I now put about a pound every 2 weeks to maintain a clear blue pool ... show more

I've used several pool shock products in the past. This one works wonders! My pool has never been clearer! No problems with the lid removal. The lid requires a reasonably intelligent adult to read the instructions and open it. It's not easy to open for a reason!
