I did a lot of looking and researching for a good quality filter housing and finally decided to take a chance on this AO Smith unit and I'm glad I did. This is a very stout well built unit and it is easy to install. I designed and built my own system and put 2 of these single-layer filters in series with each other and a 50 micron spin down filter and then into a water softener and the difference is unbelievable even with the softener in bypass or regen mode. No more wierd taste, no more stinky sulfur smell and best of all no more clear water iron stains or water stains at all. We'll worth the money and another major advantage to these units is the female threaded fittings are brass on the inlet and outlet ports which is way better than the plastic hook ups everyone else seems to offer. The only thing I'd like to see done differently is if they could add a pitcock valve on the bottom of the housing to drain the water out before removing the filter for maintenance or replacement. It's not a big deal to me but it is a little heavy and you have to be careful when removing it or you'll have a big mess to clean up. ... show more

Love this filter housing. We added this to our well water supply. There was NO filter on the water line to our house when we purchased it. I am using it with a 20 micron filter to filter out sand, dirt, debris, and other particles. Works very well. My filter comparison photo is just after 3 months. This is about how often I will put a new filter in. I used adapters to go from the 1" housing thread to 3/4" male pex. Works great! Another reviewer gave me the idea of adding a 1/4" ball valve to the bottom of the housing (thank you!). This will allow for easier filter changes. I drilled and tapped 1/4" NPT threads into the acylic housing. See pics. ... show more

Do NOT leave in a area where sun hits it because it will be filled with algae in days! We had to make a makeshift box to go around it to protect it from the sun because it was a pool of bacteria

    • The filter being clear so a person can see how dirty the filter is.
It would be nice if the filter had a 1/4" drain valve in the bottom. It might be a little heavy and very easy to spill when full of water for some people. I drilled and taped a 1/4" drain on mine. This is my second one, first froze, to me the timer is useless, I change filters by how dirty they are. Thanks ... show more

Installed this on our well...water didn't seem bad before, but this made it even better. You can taste and feel the difference. I was surprised that the filter clogged up after 2 months. Water pressure dropped a couple days beforehand and then it abruptly stopped. If you notice this, make sure you have another filter on hand or you can just remove the filter to get your pressure back. ... show more
