Easy install, quiet, and cools like a champ Couldn't be happier with this Antarctic Star 12,000 BTU U-shaped unit. Installation was genuinely simple — I had it mounted in under 15 minutes, and from cutting open the box to being completely done and running, it took me less than 30 minutes total. No struggle, no calling for help. Once it's running, it's impressively quiet. The U-shaped design really does cut down the noise compared to a standard window unit, so I'm not fighting to hear the TV or hold a conversation. And it has no trouble cooling a large room — it gets the space comfortable fast and keeps it there. If you're on the fence, this one's an easy recommendation. I’ve been using this about a week so I can’t speak to long term quality. It’s much quieter than other air conditioners I own, especially if you use the quiet mode. The u shape means it is secure on a second story window. Definitely need to measure carefully, it was almost too narrow for my old window sills. Otherwise installation was easy with two people. Something no review mentioned was that there is a drainage port on the inside half of the unit. If I leave this open it probably drains a cup of water an hour, so if that’s an issue to you definitely don’t buy this. The only video review that showed this was clearly a paid review of someone who didn’t use the unit, as this is impossible to miss if you leave it on for more than five minutes. The u shape means that water cannot drain outside. The water would eventually fill up the interior half and leak out of the casing if you didn’t open the plug. However, if your alternative is a portable a/c the drainage is situation is inevitable. Either way this was worth it to me and definitely cools the majority of my apartment (~200sqft living room and 45sqft of hallway) and is half as loud as my other unit. I’ll have to buy a hose and bucket for the drainage as I cannot drain this outside. Update after a month hot weather: still quiet, still works great, continues to drain inside. Eco mode works well, it only turns on periodically and keeps it around the set temperature. Timer and remote work well too. If you were considering a floor unit this is probably a better option, but I wouldn’t pick this over a window unit that doesn’t drain outside unless you have to. ... show more

    • Disappointing Experience with 12,000 BTU Unit - Issues with Compressor & Customer Service

I purchased the upgraded 12,000 BTU unit, and at first, it worked great. However, after some time, I started experiencing significant compressor issues. The unit became very loud and struggled to operate properly. I followed the installation instructions exactly, but now the unit only works in eco mode, and the compressor has trouble fully activating. I contacted customer service, and they informed me that they have no replacement units available, despite the fact that I can still purchase another from the same seller. As a result, I now have to return the unit, which will take over a week for them to receive, and then another week to process the refund. This means I'll be without AC during the end of July and start of August—peak summer heat. Overall, this has not been worth the hassle. The product's performance issues, combined with poor customer service and the long return process, have left me very dissatisfied. ... show more

Does a good job cooling and has quite a few setting that come in handy. However, the main selling point of a window unit that sits low and straddles the window sill isn’t as great as it sounds. It’s also much louder than I expected. Yes, it’s nice not having as much of the window blocked by an AC unit, and you definitely don’t have any worries that it’s going to drop out the window. Those are big benefits. But getting the unit into position and having to piece together weatherstripping/foam board to block window openings was a real headache. The unit also weighs much more than a typical window unit and is harder to navigate since you have to lift over the sill and then drop it down. You also need a big window because you need enough clearance to negotiate the unit through and then down. If low profile and having the AC securely fastened around the sill are priorities, this is a good unit. But for the hassle it took to install, I will go with a regular in-window unit in the future. Also, make sure you measure before you buy. I have what I think is a normal-depth window sill, and the unit barely fit around it. ... show more
