  • Decent Android Headunit with Some Shortcomings
Style: 4GB +64GB For Civic 2012-2015
I bought this kit to replace the OEM headunit on a Honda Civic 2012 EX (4-door). There are a lot of these kits floating around on Amazon, but the one from this seller had actual non-incentivized reviews and they seemed decent. This kit comes with everything you need to install with one minor exception. If you’re hoping to find step-by-step instructions on installing this unit inside the box, you’re going to be disappointed. For the most part, the install is pretty simple, but if you’ve never done this before, or never done basic electrical work on a car, the process can be intimidating. Here’s a breakdown review with some tips on the installation process: Build quality: Overall, the actual headunit is really nice. It’s got a solid build and the screen/display quality is actually quite good. There are no knobs or tactile buttons on the unit itself, but there are some capacitive touch buttons on the left side of the screen. There is a built-in microphone that is surprisingly responsive and picks up my voice well, even with road noise in the background. The display is large and responsive. There’s multi-touch on the display that allows for pinch-to-zoom and rotate gestures when using maps and other apps. On my ‘12 Civic, the headunit fits perfectly into the cavity where the OEM radio was. Sound quality: Out of the box, the sound seemed muffled and low. There is an app in the app drawer for sound effects which improves the sound quality quite a bit. The only downside is the radio operates at a lower volume than the OEM, but I haven’t noticed any issues with increasing the volume to a level that was on-par with the OEM unit. Software and performance: This unit is running Android 15. Like other reviewers have mentioned, this is basically a glorified Android tablet repurposed into a radio headunit. At first, I didn’t know how I felt about this, but after using the unit for a couple of days, I don’t really think about it anymore. The performance is actually pretty good. I don’t notice much lag, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay (through the Zlink app) work as they should. I’m not the biggest fan of the themes that are included, but that isn’t a big deal. The only thing I find useless is using the navigation apps that come pre-installed. Out of the box, you get Google Maps, HERE maps, and Waze. Google Maps runs so poorly that it’s basically useless. I tried downloading some offline maps, but never got the turn-by-turn directions to work. Waze works well, but is useless without a WIFI connection. There might be a way to download offline maps for Waze, but I haven’t figured it out yet. I had some issues with bluetooth disconnecting and reconnecting with my Pixel 9A when using wireless Android Auto. This would happen intermittently, but I could fix it by disabling the WIFI hotspot (needed for the ZLink app) and it would correct the issue. I tried using my son’s iPhone 13 and didn’t have any issues with bluetooth disconnecting; however, I could never get his phone to autoconnect via bluetooth. When using AA or Carplay via USB, the performance was flawless. My Pixel appears to charge when plugged in via USB, but never at a rate enough to actually keep my battery life from dropping. The rear-view camera would auto trigger (via CANBUS) when the car is put into reverse; however, the rear-view display would show unnecessary information for radar sensing and occasionally show the color configuration for the rear-view camera for some reason. This was easily fixed by going into the factory settings in car settings and adjusting the rear-view camera settings in the protocol configuration menu. Overall, I’m satisfied with the software and performance despite the quirks. Installation: I won’t go over the entire installation, but I’ll offer some tips that worked for me when I did the installation. 1) When you remove the OEM headunit, there are white clips that need to be removed and reinstalled on the new unit in order for the new headunit to mount properly. If you don’t replace these clips, the new headunit won’t snap into place. 2) Make sure you plug in the cables for CANBUS and USB (both the 6-pin and 4-pin) plugs. If you don’t plug in the CANBUS unit correctly, you won’t be able to use your steering wheel controls and see other useful information like car door status. 3) The kit comes with 2 USB cables (4-pin and 6-pin). I bought an additional kit for a USB 3.0 flush mount plug and drilled a hole for it near the power outlet and aux input plugs. If you want Apple Carplay to work via USB, you will need to use the 4-pin version of the USB plug. 4) Installing the rear-view camera is, by far, the worst part of the install. This is the exception I mentioned in the beginning of the review. There are several helpful videos on Youtube that can help you manage this part, but the provided cables in the kit were not long enough for me on my ‘12 Civic. Specifically, the power cable for the rear-view camera. I had to buy additional 18ga red and black primary wires to extend this out. If I didn’t, closing the trunk would cause the red power wire to rip off the reverse light wire. I would highly recommend using liquid electrical tape for sealing up the connections. One other thing, I spliced my power cable into a reverse light, but you should be able to splice into the power off the wiring harness of the headunit itself. I didn’t try this method, but a video on Youtube said this works if you’re not keen on splicing car’s reverse light cables. I’m pretty satisfied with this kit. It allows my older Civic to get a much needed, modern upgrade. What’s disappointing to be is how difficult this kit makes installing the rear-view camera. If they would’ve made it plug and play like the headunit itself, I would rate this kit much higher. It’s odd that this feature seems like such an afterthought when the headunit and the wiring harness for it are actually designed pretty well. To be fair, this kit does come with 98% of what you need in order to do the install. However, the instructions are really lacking and you might need to supply some additional materials. I rated this headunit a 4/5, but realistically, this is more of a 3.5/5 product. I would recommend this kit to anyone looking to modernize their Honda, but just be aware, there are some quirks. ... show more

  • Excellent upgrade for my 2012 Honda Civic
Style: 4GB +64GB For Civic 2012-2015
I installed this wireless Apple CarPlay screen in my 2012 Honda Civic and I’m honestly impressed. The installation was straightforward, the screen looks great on the dashboard, and wireless CarPlay connects quickly every time without any issues. The display is clear and responsive, sound quality is solid, and having navigation, music, and calls hands-free makes driving so much more convenient. It feels like a modern upgrade that completely refreshed an older car. Overall, great quality for the price and exactly what I was looking for. Highly recommend this to anyone wanting Apple CarPlay without replacing their factory radio. ... show more

  • DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME
Style: 4GB +64GB For Civic 2012-2015
I couldn't be any more unhappy about this radio. We recieved the 1st one it kept rebooting. I checked the voltage all the wiring. Some got a replacement. It was on foe 5 minutes the Bluetooth wouldn't stay on at all. Then boom back to rebooting with a pop noise to follow. There just hoping people wait longer than 30 days to install so you can't get a refund. Thus was such a major let down. The second didtcome w a back up camera either. And both radios had scratches on the screen. ... show more

  • Fits perfect.
Style: 4GB +64GB For Civic 2012-2015
The size is perfect! It fits directly where the old radio was and looks like it always belonged there. It was basically easy to install mostly being plug and play, I did have ONE problem with the radio but thankfully the seller helped me out with that problem. Other than that the radio comes with an equalizer so you can play with that a little and boost highs and lows depending on if you want bass or vocals and such. All around it’s a great radio and for how much it’s worth, it’s definitely a must have upgrade. ... show more
