  • Great looking camera, needs some work but overall a great buy!
Review for Amcrest webcam First Day: So, I will begin with the physical positives and negatives. The Amcrest webcam at first glance does not seem to be much especially given the $50 plus it retails for. However, once you have it in your hand and attach it to your preferred device, the camera begins to show its worth. Pros 1. The size of the lens is wonderful. Due to the big lens it is safe to assume it will have a wide range and be valuable. 2. The next valuable aspect about the webcam is the long USB cord. You must commend someone who thinks about the “little” things. A long cord is a positive in my book because we all know at some point in our life where we wish we had a longer cord or had to buy an adapter to make the cord longer. 3. The next valuable feature and what attracted me to this webcam was the privacy cover actual lens, they call it a privacy cover. What threw me off was that the cover for the lens comes packaged apart from the webcam. All you must do is snap it on or leave it off if that is what you prefer. I was already happy knowing that I’m getting a cover so my webcam isn’t being used to spy on me. Now I like the fact that I can snap it on and off as I please, and it does seem sturdy however I wouldn’t dare drop it while it’s open; it might just break and then you have no more privacy! 4. The status indicator light is a great size and tells you when the webcam is in use and when it is not. Fairly easy and simple; red means off, green means on. 5. Another pro would be the fact that you can attach the webcam to a tripod which I was not expecting; who really thinks of that!? Overall, I don’t think I will be using that part of the webcam, but it’s good to know I have that option! 6. Last positive is that the web cam is really nice to look at; it’s a clean and the scheme works well. Just a great cosmetic webcam that you could admire. Cons 1. The price tag is fairly high for a webcam, you can argue that the price could be lower and the price is only really high because physically the camera looks and feels nice when you have it in your hand and setup on your device. 2. The clip to place on devices is okay, nothing really great about it, it does the job but can’t help but feel that it could be better. I was scared about the thought of dropping it and breaking the clip, much like the privacy cover. 3. My favorite thing about this webcam is the privacy clip but that also falls under a con. The little plastic cover that covers the webcam lens easily snaps off after you lift it past a certain point, was hoping it would be sturdier. It happened way too many times on my first day that I had to put it as a con. You have to be mindful to make sure you don’t move the flimsy clip after a certain point especially if it’s a main physical feature on the product. Itis rather annoying. I also couldn’t help but be very nervous when I had to snap it back. It could easily backfire since the two little points that snap into place can easily break off. In the images and the instructions, it shows the cover at a much higher angle, which could suggest my cover is “defective” and even so that would still keep it as a con because it’s easy to ruin then and that makes me sad. That is all for the pros and cons for the physical portion of this product, next I will talk about the features and the function of the webcam on day 1. Pros 1. To start, after getting my hands on it and opening it up on my desktop to use the camera app, I must say it was nice to finally have a better-quality webcam to use. By no means is this a phone or DSLR camera level of quality, but it does the job. I was particularly impressed when I opened it up with low light around me and I could still clearly see myself and it was not to hazy or blurry, so that was really impressive. When I finally got around to video chat with someone it worked out great. The person I was chatting with noticed a difference in camera quality compared to my laptop webcam. I will make a note after this about a phone camera and using apps to video chat with someone! 2. The mic picks up sound very well. The person I called had no issues talking to me with the webcam’s mic so that was good. I appreciate that the mic is also hidden and the tiny hole in where it lies is barely noticeable. 3. When using the webcam, my assumption of the lens proved to be correct. The webcam has such a wide range that you can see a lot in the background. If that is something you do not like, then you probably should not buy this. But also depending on which app you use to video call someone with, you might be able to change that. But I see this being a great camera for big families, grandparents, and people who need to have that wide lens to capture a lot. I was very impressed with how much of the background the webcam picked up. Cons 1. The only real small con I have for this webcam on day one is that even though the quality improves greatly from other webcams I have and used, I can’t help but feel it doesn’t fully run on 1080P. To be fair, there are many devices out there that are not a full 4k or full 1080P and if you do want that you have to pay even more money for it. But from using this product it felt closer to 720P or just a bit higher; so right in between 1080P and 720P. Didn’t really get the impression that this was close to 1080P which makes me a bit disappointed. But if you do not care about that then great! It does still get the job done! Something to keep in mind: Something I noticed when using the camera on day 1. The person I spoke to pointed out that I still looked a bit “blurry” which I found odd but didn’t put this as a con. We were using Facebook messenger to video chat and then I suggested we try using Zoom. After switching over I noticed the quality of the person’s screen changed significantly. The person viewing my image also noticed the improvement in quality. So, when it comes to video chatting with someone, you might need to consider which application you use if you want better video quality. I will try different video calling apps throughout the week to see any difference in image quality. However, in my opinion the webcam does not run a full 1080P even when using well known apps such as Facebook messenger and a simple Camera App on my windows desktop. OVERALL: Overall, after having the Amcrest webcam for a full week, the webcam has been an overall a great piece of technology to own and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new piece of streaming equipment, or just over general use. Given the current circumstances of the world and many people working from home, such as myself, this device is a something you may want to have especially for the small upgrade in features. The price of the webcam might turn people off, but given that some people, such as myself, have been stuck on low quality web cameras to some slightly “high-resolution” cameras, this would be an upgrade for some. To conclude, having this camera in my possession and having to see it everyday made me feel like I made a great purchase with the overall cosmetic design of the webcam. The privacy cover protecting my privacy, as opposed to using a sticky note was the icing on the cake for me to just say “yeah this is a good investment”. People who buy this will get what they want out of it and more if you plan on using it more than once a week or once a month. I hope this review helped someone out there who is considering a brand-new web camera! -Franky ... show more

  • Good for the Price
I have been testing this webcam out for quite awhile and I must say, I am quite impressed. While this is no means the absolute best (you'll need to spend closer, or above, $100 for that) it does it's job well, and will require a slight tune which is very easy to do if you have strange lighting like I do (Daylight LED bulbs, Blue Walls, Reflective surfaces, Ceiling Light, high contrast environment) Before I start more of this review, I would like to mention my software for trying to make the video is having issues where the actual quality is not the same and doesn't allow me to showcase how the camera looks accurately. So unfortunately I do not have a video to link to To start off, I will mention that the overall quality could use a little improvement as running the Anti-Flicker at 50Hz seems to be a major difference between 60Hz, and you sort of need to run it at 50Hz which is really strange otherwise things look a little weird. You should have it on 60Hz, not 50Hz, but hey, at 50Hz it looks a lot better. This is a setting you can find in the application you are using your webcam on which opens up Video Proc. Now, for my absolute favorite part of the camera, which is what I've done more testing with and actually have a video on my Twitch using it (I think): The focal point isn't changeable. Everything is in focus which means for VR games this is the best webcam for that because those of you with webcams that have Autofocus know that AF doesn't always work flawlessly and half the time it keeps trying to focus, especially if you are moving around or something is in frame. This is also useful for when doing Zoom meetings or in group video calls when you wish to have something in frame in focus along with yourself such as online classes or conference calls where you are needing to show something. This even is great for when your window is smaller because the video looks extra crisp and clean. The next thing I want to point out is that you will need to run a higher contrast. Why is that? Well, that is because both the first and second Webcam I received both had a green hue on the edges but as I found out, it is because of the Contrast settings that Windows sets automatically. It's a very low contrast and combined with my blue hue lights and blue walls* do impact the sensor as it may not be tuned for my setup, but this may affect others as well with other lighting setups. I bumped up the brightness a little bit and the contrast to eliminate the green hue that seems to only affect greys and darks but not pure blacks. Do know that this will affect light areas as well and make them brighter, which can be negated by the next point. The privacy cover doubles as a back light blocker. If you have a ceiling light this is extra handy. All you do is angle the cover so that a shadow casts over the lens, but the cover is not in frame and you just eliminated the extremely bright light at the top of the frame by no longer having light bleeding into it causing a very ugly effect. My Logitech C920 (Gen1, first release) requires me to have a custom made flap to counteract this, which for me is just a piece of black thick paper to prevent light reflection. The last thing I need to point out is that the microphone on this camera is really good for what it is. It's very tinny since it catches a lot of highs so it can be a little intense for people sensitive for high frequencies. However, I have had a couple of other webcams, including my current C920, that I will never let myself use the mic by disabling it in Windows because of how bad they are. You do not need to worry about that with this webcam though. If you don't have a microphone nor a webcam, this would do very well for both. But if you need just a microphone, I wouldn't get it just because at that point you would want a desktop USB microphone. Now, onto a Versus comparison to my Logitech C920 and Canon T7i (I will be using bullet points from here on out) Amcrest AWC195-B PROS - Amazing Focal point set - Great Color reproduction, decent Accuracy - Versatile Mounting Locations using threaded camera mount and those mounting systems - Great Built-In Microphone - Privacy Cover that doubles as a Light blocker - Subtle Indicator Light CONS - Green hue that requires tuning to fix (But looks amazing after) - Very Limited controls with several placebo sliders - Weighted Base has no way to tighten it to keep it secured to a thin screen. It's fallen during my bump test Logitech C920 PROS - Great overall picture quality out of the box - Great color accuracy and reproduction - Massive Range of settings for fine tuning video - Versatile Mounting Locations using threaded camera mount and those mounting systems - Stays extremely secured to thin screens. Never fell during a bump or shake test CONS - Very Poor quality microphone - Blurry/Smooth video quality (smooth as in no fine details/sharpness) - No Privacy Cover to double as light blocker - Slightly Distracting Indicator lights Canon T7i (the "$100+" territory I referred to) PROS - Stunning Quality - Interchangeable focal point that can be fine tuned to the exact point you want - Many different lenses to increase quality and positioning of camera - Can be placed anywhere (Also a CON, Check CON section) - Intuitive Controls for very fine tuning of video clarity - Can use as a normal Camera and take amazing photos CONS - Runs off Batteries - Heavy & Bulky (Compared to Webcam) - Can be placed anywhere, with the right length of cable, Tripod/Mount, and necessary software if your camera is even supported. Not simple at all. - EXPENSIVE for just Webcam use. But if you already have a supported Camera, you're good to go and just need everything else you don't have ... show more
