  • Great video at a great price
I received the Amcrest HD webcam promptly, it was well packaged. It will mount to most any monitor easily and it also has a ¼-20 threaded stud on the bottom to accommodate tripod mounting. Also included is a 4” tall adjustable table top tripod with bendable legs. It also has a privacy cover that attaches to the camera but for now I didn’t bother with it, maybe later. After mounting it to my flat panel monitor, I plugged the 5’ USB cord into my Windows 10-64 bit PC and it installed within seconds without any intervention from me. There is no included software with this camera; it instead relies solely on 3rd party apps. I opened the Windows 10 Microsoft camera app and the webcam was there, no installation necessary. I set it to the full 1080 video quality and adjusted the brightness slightly to compensate for my room lighting. The video is clear and sharp with excellent color reproduction, the best I’ve seen in a webcam. Also the wide angle lens covers a much broader area than the Logitech webcam that this unit replaced. Next I tried it on a Facebook video call from the USA to Liverpool England and again it was recognized immediately and it functioned without a hitch. Both the video and microphone worked perfectly. Without prompting, my English friend remarked at how good the video looked on their end. I asked about the sound and they said it too, was very clear. As a longtime Amcrest product user, I also tested the webcam on my Blue Iris surveillance software and once again it was recognized and installed without any difficulty. All in all I am very pleased with the camera and I can highly recommend it others. Note also that Amcrest has something which has become increasingly rare; they actually have a toll free customer support number should you require some assistance. For value and function, I’m giving this camera a 5 star rating. ... show more

  • A great option for the average or below average video user
In the absence/reduction of face-to-face time during this health crisis period, people have become extremely reliant on proxy contact to keep in touch with one another. Having relied on their home security system for years, I was thrilled to learn that Amcrest also had a line of webcams, to connect to the outside world. I’ve relied on my Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 since 2011 so I saw it fit to upgrade to and test out the modern and affordable Amcrest 1080P HD Webcam (AWC201-B). My old system’s video quality maxed out at 720p (this was HD back in 2011) so I was eager to upgrade to a 1080p system for webchats. Out of the small box, the camera comes in a pretty simple two-piece set-up; a detached plastic material lens-cover and the webcam itself with an embedded 5’9” USB2.0 power/connection cord. I would have preferred to have the lens cover preinstalled or integrated onto the camera instead of it being a separate piece. The lens cover attaches to the camera using a double-sided tape that is preinstalled on the cover itself. The face of the camera is a glass type construction split into three sections. The camera section is in the center with two LED lights mounted to each side of the lens. The microphone receiver is to the left of the lens and the right side just has the manufacture logo printed on it. The backing of the camera feels like a pretty common plastic covering. The stand/clip mount appears to be of the same plastic quality as the camera backing; there is an option to mount the camera on a tripod via a female 1/4” connector on the bottom plate of the stand. The folding clip feels sturdy and the contact points are cushioned with rubber padding to prevent scratching or scuffing. Overall, it’s not a bad looking webcam and it’s all black color scheme will allow it to be integrated easily into any setup. Installation and setup of this camera is pretty straight forward on my Windows 10 system; it’s pretty much plug-and-play. There is no on/off switch on the camera but the two LED indicator lights on the camera will light up when the camera and mic are accessed. The long cable allows for a variety of mounting positions. The camera itself does not have any software to manage it; instead, it is managed via whichever third-party app is used to operate it. Mounting the camera on the top of my computer monitor, it is only adjustable vertically. Horizontal adjustment is only possible by physically moving the entire camera to a different part of the monitor, standing it on the desk, or mounting it on a tripod. The video field of view is 70 degrees so it captures a decent amount of the environment; make sure nothing is in frame - that you don’t want seen. Not surprisingly, this camera’s video quality is an improvement over my old 720p device; but, it’s really nothing to marvel over in today’s world of standard 4K video quality. I tested the camera using the default Windows 10 camera app and OBS Studio. The Windows 10 app does not offer much of anything to adjust the camera settings with. Windows 10’s default microphone setting does not allow for any audio setting changes beyond volume adjustment. OBS offers more but it’s not something most users will know how to tinker with. I originally wanted to be able to use this camera for streaming or content creation but found that it is only really good for the occasional camera user. The video quality is not sharp enough or clear to be able to compete with today’s 4K technology that can be had on most smartphones. The audio quality sounds muffled, does not filter out background sounds, and captures a lot of static wind/air noise. I found that a separate and dedicated microphone and video setup would better suit my needs. However, for webchats and meetings while at my workstation, this product is cheap and decent enough to accomplish those needs. Bottom-line, this is a simple product to use that requires no prior knowledge or experience. It’s fairly affordable, decently constructed, and isn’t too bad of a looker for most average desktop setups/users. Price to performance, I would say that this is a definite 4 out of 5 stars due to a lack of supportive software. ... show more

  • A Decent Webcam For The Price
I have been pleasantly surprised by the Amcrest AWC201-B webcam. I honestly knew very little about Amcrest (just knowing they made great security cameras) before owning this webcam. The webcam comes in a very small box. On the box there is just a little bit of information about the features of the webcam and list of what's included in the box. I personally think the packaging is great. It's simple and easy to get into. There is nothing worse than having to deal with frustrating packaging. The webcam is super easy to set up. I clipped it to my monitor in a manner of three seconds. It easily clipped to my screen and seems very stable. I then connected the USB cable to my PC (which is surprisingly pretty long). My computer instantly recognized the webcam and I was good to go. I have been using the webcam for mainy Zoom calls. The video quality is much better than the built in webcam I was using. I'll admit, the video quality isn't perfect. It can appear a little blurry at times. But for the price, this camera definitely outperforms other webcams in its price range. I do kind of wish there was some software included where you could adjust some visual settings with the webcam. The built in microphone is also pretty good. I would rate it about as good as the included microphone that is built into my laptop computer. Which isn't a bad thing as everyone on my Zoom calls mentioned that they could hear me very well. I also wanted to mention the included privacy cover. I love that Amcrest included this feature. I like to consider myself a tech enthusiast and so I am very weary about internet security and safety. I love that there is a physical cover that can cover the webcam when not in use. I don't have to worry about potentially unwanted prying eyes. Overall, I am very happy with this webcam. It provides a great picture quality for the price range. And I would definitely be willing to consider Amcrest products again after using this webcam. ... show more
