  • Good for the price
Model: 5 string Acoustic
This is a decent banjo for the price and it plays fine once everything is set up, but the overall build quality is not great. The armrest screw snapped the first time I tried adjusting it, so I had to buy a replacement. Once replaced it worked without further problems. The resonator design is also on the rough side. The picture shows how it is held on with four small blocks, and the screws sit in the gap between the blocks instead of threading into solid material. After I adjusted the neck tension the resonator stopped staying on because the gap was too large for the screws to tighten against. I had to tighten the screws that hold the blocks to the resonator itself to close that gap. That fixed the problem, but I am not sure if those screws will loosen again over time. If they do I may end up gluing them in place. Despite these issues the banjo becomes a usable instrument once everything is tightened and dialed in. It is suitable for someone who does not mind a bit of DIY setup and maintenance. It does come with a real Remo banjo head, which is a nice surprise, along with a spare set of strings, a book, a strap, and some picks. The tuner that comes with it is not great, but I had a Fender one that worked well. It does sound great, and the frets are smooth, no rough edges. I tested the whole fretboard with a rocker. No tall frets, no sunken frets. Everything about this banjo is great, in my opinion, aside from the connection to the resonator. If they just added a bit of glue to the wood blocks, this would be a five star banjo. Overall this is a fair starter banjo for the price as long as you are willing to do a little work to get it stable. ... show more

  • Great Beginner Banjo and Lots of Fun to Learn
Model: 5 string Acoustic
I got this banjo just to try something new, and it’s been a lot of fun. The sound is bright and clear, and it actually feels really solid for the price. The neck is smooth and easy to play, which makes learning much easier for a beginner like me. Everything you need comes in the kit—case, picks, tuner, and even extra strings. It’s well made, easy to tune, and a great choice if you’re starting out or just want to explore a new instrument. ... show more

  • Quality Instrument Priced Right, Good Extras
Model: 5 string Acoustic
A very impressive starter instrument! I've reviewed ALLSET products before and found them to be, at times, uneven. I have an ALLSET pedal board with power supply that knocks it out of the park - excellent quality on the build, tough as nails, reliable...outstanding. I have also reviewed an ALLSET cab emulator that was pretty mid, and ultimately did not work for me. This starter banjo is firmly in the former camp - it is AWESOME! Take this as a beginner's word because I am not an experienced banjo player - but my grandfather was, and I grew up listening to Bluegrass. I know what they sound like, and no surprise: this sounds like that. The timbre is excellent - twangy, whiney, steely - and the resonator gives you good, full volume. Finish was flawless. Beautiful gloss finish on all wooden parts. The neck has a warm honey burst coloration, the body is warm mahogany-toned. Metal parts gleam like the chrome on a classic hot rod. Fretboard was smooth, adequately oiled, and straight. Faux mother-of pearl fret markers are typical. It's a beautiful instrument. Extra bonus points for excellence: Rounded fret edges! These frets are so smooth, and in addition the edges are rounded off for maximum comfort and ease of play - this is an A+ move that I was not expecting. This last week I played an instrument from a major brand player that felt way, way cheaper than this banjo, and it was because of the rough fret edges. These are silky smoth. Setup was not difficult, but if you're new to stringed instrument it can be a bit intimidating. Violins are way tougher, so if you've ever set one of those up before, you won't have a hard time here. Just remember to work gently and steadily, follow the instructions (or find an online tutorial). Provided you don't puncture the head, there is nothing on here that can't be replaced, so take a deep breath, loosen the strings a few turns, and slide that bridge into place. The included finder guide is a great touch - I can verify that the spacing is correct: the distance from the nut to the bridge, per the guide, is exactly twice the distance from the nut to the twelfth fret - but feel free to re-measure if you like. Included extras are generally good - you get a change of strings, a set of finger picks, a clip-on tuner, a bridge placement guide, a carrying bag, and an instruction manual that shows you how to complete setup and how to tune (though tuning up from scratch can be a bit daunting since it's such an unusual instrument - the fifth string is the high one, the fourth is the low one, and most bluegrass tunes to open G so it's not super intuitive if you're coming over from guitar...but I digress). So for about 200 bucks you get a closed-back Bluegrass style resonator banjo, extras to get you started, and a very convenient gig bag for portability. This is a functional package for beginners and beyond - I am in the main a bass guitar player who dabbles in other stringed instruments, and I could see this being my only banjo for a long, long time. Great instrument, great package, great price - if you're looking to take up this instrument, this is a better place to start than most! ... show more
