  • I love this chair!
Color: Black
I needed two different chairs for my office. I browsed through a lot on here and decided to go with the Alera Elusion Multifunction for one of them. I was originally going to get the high back version, but tried the mid-back instead to save money and I'm glad I did. It's perfect! PROS: Easy to assemble with all necessary tools included. The parts are sturdy, solid, and durable. Nothing made me feel like I bought a cheap chair. It's incredibly comfortable. The seat really contours my lower body and has a nice width in case I want to sit in a non-traditional way like with a leg crossed under me or "Indian style". It has all of the important adjustments: Seat height, seat angle, seat slider, back height, back tilt. This allowed me to get the chair exactly how I wanted to both be comfortable and improve my posture. I work at the computer well over 8 hours a day and my old chair made my back and butt hurt badly. Even before I had the Elusion adjusted, it straightened me out and kept me lifted, my lower back felt released, my whole back felt supported, and my butt felt nicely cushioned. I can definitely sit on it all day without a problem. My old chair had no arms and my desk is a bit high, so reaching up without support when typing put unnecessary strain on my biceps and forearms. The Elusion's arms provide adequate support and adjust high enough to keep my arms and hands at the perfect level for my desk. I'm 5'2" and the lowest seat height is enough for me to keep my feet planted flat on the floor. I've only had this chair for a day and so far, it's everything I wanted and more. I have a Humanscale Liberty task chair at work that runs from about $500 used to $1000 retail. I'm thrilled I found something that provides me the same level of comfort and support with even more adjustments for a fraction of the cost without sacrificing build quality. CONS: This might be a con for some, so I'll mention that the seat was unexpectedly heavy. I didn't require help with it, but some reviewers did, so be prepared for that. The plastic of the arms is comfortable enough, but makes me feel like they might crack or something one day. There's a plastic "shield" that covers the back support. I couldn't get it on flatly. I don't know if that was my error in assembly or an issue with the fit of the part. It's cosmetic, so I left it off. The placement of the adjustment levers and dials make it uncomfortable to make adjustments while sitting in the chair in a normal position. I found myself having to reach around/under the arms, lean to the side, bend over, etc. to get a clear shot at them. Also, turning the knobs to adjust the arm width from a seated position made my wrists hurt, so for anyone who has arthritis/carpel tunnel/etc, I would suggest kneeling next to the chair and making those adjustments instead. Lastly, I don't know what surface the casters were designed to roll on, but they didn't roll well over my flat rug while I was on the chair. They rolled very smoothly when I got off. My Liberty chair rolls over the rug fine while I'm on it, but its casters are designed differently. Overall, none of these were issues that I felt warranted knocking the rating down. The chair is fantastic. ... show more

  • Good Chair and Some Notes on Assembly.
Color: Black
Short version: Probably the best chair at its price point, pretty easy assembly. Get this one. I just finished putting it together. I like the adjustability - for something I'm going to sit in several hours a day I need more than just up-and-down. The tooshie feels cushy. Arms are molded plastic with a little give to them; not uncomfortable but I'll probably cover them with a cotton sock or something fabric. The arms can be removed easily if you don't want them. I am able to sit in the chair and play a D-sized acoustic guitar without interference from the arms. They also adjust in width. I'm a relatively big boy - 5'10" and almost 18 stone - and this chair is plenty roomy for me, though I'm deep rather than wide. The parts are on the substantial side of what you'd expect at this price point. I'm a little concerned about the mesh back with cats in the house - I hope they don't decide it's a scratching post. So it's a most comfortable and accommodating chair for what I paid, $132 in November 2015. The first chair they sent was missing a screw - Amazon had me box up the whole kit and caboodle and picked up for free from my home for a refund; I ordered another. Really, they could have just mailed me a replacement screw, but whatever... All parts were included and well-packed on the second try. This is one of those things that's difficult to re-pack in the same box, so I recommend that you photograph the stages of unpacking in case there's, for example, a missing screw and you have to try to fit it all back in the box. Then you will have an easier time than I did. The only tool you need to assemble this other than the provided Allen keys is a Craftsman 9-41294 3 #1 Phillips Screwdriver. The instructions are mostly pictorial but it worked out OK. Solo, It took me about 45 minutes and I'm slow at this sort of thing. I'm a middle-aged man of average strength. A tiny person might have a problem with the weight of the seat and back assembly, so get a buddy to help. Please first check that you have all the parts. Steps 2-3 were a little vague on how the steel back support fits, but look for the word "outward" stamped on the support. That helps. Step 5 illustrates attaching the back to the seat while the seat is inverted. I couldn't get it to work that way. I put the seat on the pneumatic cylinder, upright, then I was able easily to fit the back in place. Be careful with the stacking sequence of flat washers and lock washers. I squinted a little at the pictures and then took my best guess. A nice touch - all the bolts - both of them - had thread locking compound applied. So in its first day of service I'm happy with my new home office chair. If it goes bad or anything, I'll update this review but I expect it to last until the gas cylinder loses its gas - probably at least a couple of years. Then I'll try just replacing the cylinder. 6 weeks after purchase, Dec 24 2015 - I remain quite content with this chair. ... show more
