  • Works Great but, noisy on higher levels
This has 3 fan speed levels. When it on level one, the noise level is super quiet. But level two is a different story. That noise level change is the only down side to this humidifier. The built in humidistat helps hold the humidity level. I need to fill about every 3 or so days but, the humidity hasn't been super low outside yet. Make sure the get some anti mold liquid. The filter that come in the unit molded pretty quickly. Not fault of the unit but, it will happen. ... show more

  • Most cost-effective, simple and cheap-to-operate large area humidifier out there
We have been using this now for four years, all winter long. It operates for hours on end in the winter time. It is very simple to use, easy to operate, and can humidify large areas. Our total upstairs area that we use it in is probably around 600-700 sq ft, a kitchen and living room with a fireplace. If you're doing much more than that, I'd suggest getting another one for other rooms. We use a filter all winter long. We run it non-stop for two weeks, then put it in the bathtub, rinse it out and clean it thoroughly. We spritz a little hydrogen peroxide bleach across the filter, let it set for a few min, then rinse that off good and crank it up again. Sometimes if we have a few days in a row where the humidity is up we'll allow the paper filter to dry out...put it in an empty tank, put a folded up piece of paper towel under the water level rod and turn it on. When you're running it on low it is very quiet...however, on very dry days you'll probably have to run it on medium or high to keep the humidity up. Then it's not so quiet, but it's the noise a fan makes. No regrets at all buying it, we'll get another one when this one finally packs it in. A few other notes: 1) buy the recommended filters. Yes, they might be a little more, but they work well and if you're replacing them once a season not a big deal 2) make sure you clean it out at least every two weeks, and do NOT let it just sit with water in it...either drain it or run it. We do not put any chemicals or vinegar in the water, but we just keep it out of the way where it can't get junk in it and clean it on schedule. 3) make sure when you clean it you do use soap and warm water, and something (safe) to clean the filter. Be careful with the filter, as when it's wet you can damage it and have to use another one. 4) I noticed several people commented on shoddy quality. It's all plastic except for the fan motor...but you get it for a bit over $110. We've had no mechanical or electrical problems with it, and its done the job we wanted it for and done it well. ... show more

  • Good value, but loud
Very light, but that's not surprising given that there's not much to it. Build quality is what you'd expect for this price range, pretty thin and flimsy plastic, the front grating isn't really held on by anything it just kind of flops in there, which feels cheap and unsatisfying. However, given that this thing pretty much just sits in the same spot indefinitely, it should survive well enough if you treat it right. Though it also comes with casters, so you could theoretically wheel it over to a sink or spigot and wheel it back if carrying water is a problem for you. I was dubious as to how well this style of pretty much just using a fan to dry off a sponge would work, but this thing has eaten about 4-5 gallons a day running at full power, and there's nowhere else that water could've gone but the air. I've got it next to the intake for my central air and it seems to be keeping up okay serving the whole place, but its area rating might've been a little over-stated. This is a two-floor condo that's about 2400 square feet total, and even running on high constantly the humidity tops out in the high 30s, and I've verified the machine's measurement against my own hygrometer so it's not a sampling thing. I can feel the difference in the air, but it should be able to do a little better than that. Biggest trouble is that the fan is LOUD. It's not painful or anything, but when I'm 20 feet from the humidifier and 8 feet from the TV I still have to raise the volume about 6 clicks to hear dialogue clearly. Definitely annoying. Medium and high are about the same amount of noise thanks to the buzz that comes from the voltage chopper or whatever circuit controls the fan speed. Low speed is actually very quiet, but doesn't vaporize nearly enough water to keep the RH% out of the 20s. The way I see it, it's limited by its mechanism of operation. This thing is just a bucket that the wick sits in, so when full, the wick is half covered by water so it can't evaporate as effectively. If I fill more frequently with less water to keep the level low I can get better performance out of it, but that's a pain. I wanted a big, high-capacity humidifier so that I could load it up a whole bunch and not have to worry about it for a long time. So yeah, if your house is any bigger than mine, consider an evap humidifier with an elevated tank that maintains a constant level in the tray, rather than just flooding the wick like this one does. If noise is a consideration for you, probably go with an ultrasonic type, as those produce just a little hum. But, if you want a simple, compact humidifier with a large water capacity that you can just set it up and forget about it, this is the right buy for you. I had an HVAC tech inspecting the furnace yesterday and when he saw this thing he said "Oh yeah, I have that same one! Works great." which I would say is a pretty ringing endorsement from an expert. ... show more

  • Better Than Ever!
This humidifier was purchased because our home is so dry we needed another one upstairs, and we already have one of these models downstairs that we purchased 6 years ago. The one we just purchased is even better than the one we already have, and we are pretty happy with that one. We love the three speeds on the fan of the new model: 1 is super quiet, 2 is about the level of the top speed of our old one, and 3 is mega-powerful. Also, the new design for where the water goes in is great. It's a removable grate that allows us to see the water level much more clearly than the old model. I also like the digital screen that displays the actual humidity of the room. Great addition to the product. Very, very happy. Oh, and the seller got this to us days in advance of the predicted arrival date. ... show more
