  • The saga of the spreader.
Size: One Size
UPDATE: I’ve had this for about 6 month so far and am very happy with it. Big improvement over the Brinley. The extended and updated cable controller I installed works great. What a pleasure to effortlessly operate the feed without being a contortionist. I am saving money too because of much less waste compared to the Brinley, and because of the precision of starting and stopping the feeder. I have put about 600 lbs of material through it so far (fertilizer, insect treatment) over my 1.25 acre yard over 6 month). I used to end up angry and frustrated every time I used that Brinley… this new set up is a huge improvement. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought this spreader to replace a larger, and horrible spreader I got from Brinley. I am… so far… happy with this. But there are issues to be aware of. The assembly was a little tricky, particularly with the wheel assembly. You’re gonna need a hammer, some wood, and a little know-how. The hopper plastic needed to be filed and smoothed around the feeder gate so it would slide smoothly without binding. The biggest problem with the spreader is the totally junk plastic feed control. The plastic lever is a toy. The routing of the control cable and the short length of the cable causes it to Bind, bend, and basically not work at all. The placement of it does not allow a garden tractor or riding mower operator to reach it while in use. The good news is that since this is a cable operated control, you can replace it with a long, well built control cable for about 10 bucks… along with a little creative know-how and tinkering. Which is what I did. It now works really well. See pics. The other good news is that, unlike the afore mentioned Brinley, this spreader doesn’t leave a quarter of the stuff you are spreading in the hopper. It will distribute about 98% of a 50 lb bag, leaving less than a cup of material behind. Big improvement. Overall, the spreader construction is OK. The Brinley was better built, but frankly that does t matter if you can’t spread material with it. I hope this will hold up for at least 5 years… but we will see. I’ll write an update as necessary to tell how things are going. One last comment: I would really like to know why it is so difficult to build a well designed spreader, for a reasonable price. One that doesn’t require the consumer to modify, tweak, and adjust the thing to get it to work properly. Maybe that’s a rhetorical question…. ... show more

  • Defective control lever mechanism
Size: One Size
This would be a great spreader. Except for the most important part, the control lever, it's sturdy, easy to assemble, easy to use, and it's got a 3 year warranty. One would think that the manufacturer would put as much into the most critical part, the control lever mechanism, as it does into the rest of the product. The control lever mechanism (lever mechanism and strength of cable to the hopper) is inferior; it doesn't work and it's of very poor quality and cheaply made. It cannot handle the force necessary to open the release door with even 25 lbs of material in the hopper. I set the plastic Adjustable Stop (which itself is a fragile little bit of plastic, with no instructions on how to use it), to 3.5. While moving, as instructed, I turned around and and tried to move the lever to the Adjustable Stop. But the door just wouldn't open. I had to stop, move the Adjustable Stop all the way to maximum, then start moving, to be able to apply the force necessary to open the door. This happened repeatedly, and caused massive amounts of material to fall out and be wasted, and immediately I had to move the lever to approximately 3, but since I was moving, I couldn't be sure what the setting was. Too bad they equip this spreader with such a cheap lever mechanism. FOLLOW UP (4-2023) I bought Chapin 8622B. Everything about the Chapin 8622B tow spreader is *significantly* superior to the Agri-Fab 45-0530. It’s like comparing a Yugo to a BMW. The Chapin is solid as a rock; really heavy duty constriction, made to last. It’s farm grade. When unpackaging, I examined the parts closely with glee. I kept hearing my Dad’s voice in my head saying, “You get what you paid for.” Yep. The frame, wheels, tub, and above all the two most critical parts -- the mechanism to adjust the volume, and the gearing mechanism -- are pro or farm grade construction. See the product image showing the cast metal gears; the gear housing even has a nipple to add grease. That seems like a small thing, but it's not. It an indication of quality engineering and design to last, not "planned obsolescence" as with so many throw-away products these days. Quite conveniently, it was nearly all assembled out of the box, also unlike the Agri-Fab. With the Chapin, I only had to assemble the tow assembly. It took 15 min. A customer wrote a review in April, 2023 complaining about the assembly difficulty. That certainly wasn’t my experience. A photo from a different reviewer, Doug, from June 5, 2019, shows how few parts there are to put together. If someone can’t figure that out, they probably have difficulty installing a light bulb. I agree with the rest of Doug's review too. Even the bolts and little parts come neatly packaged and labeled, not jumbled willy-nilly in a plastic bag, as his picture shows. I’ve used it twice on a 5000 sq ft lawn area and it works perfectly. When you stop, the flow of material automatically stops. To be sure, you have to get off to make adjustments to the flow if needed. And you have to set it to zero if you want to drive without material being spread. But I’m OK with that. The Agri-Fab does allow one to remain seated and try (TRY!) to make adjustments, but the Agri-Fab’s control mechanism is such a cheap piece of junk that doesn't work as intended. You see how cheap the Agri-Fab is just from looking at it. It isn’t worth it. The Chapin also comes with a cover for the tub (nice!) AND notice the shape of the tub itself. Another example of clever attention to engineering detail. It’s not rectangular; it has a pointed middle so that you can just tip it over and pour out any remaining content into a box or bag. Love It. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! ... show more

  • The third one over the years
The biggest problem with this unit is the material slide cable is flimsy. Modification is required for good operation

  • Works really well
I have put down about 400 lbs of products using this and have the following to say. This is made of good material with the exception of the adjustment flow handle. I can see why so many people have trouble with it. Aside from that all spreader are the same.

  • Difficult to start/stop the dispensing process.
Size: One Size
Speads fine. Problem is the difficulty in opening and closing the little door that stops the dispenser. That is done by a small cable hooked up to a switch on the handle. This switch also regulates the flow (how much the little door opens). When you stop, you have to turn around on the tractor seat to physically shut the little door from continuing to dispense, otherwise you have a pile of stuff under the spreader. Not an easy task. And then when you start moving, open the dispenser without pushing the lever past the mark to dispense you set it at. Once I unintentionally set the spreader up two notches and over fertilized the rest of my lawn. My fix for this is….once you open the dispenser and first get going, never stop until the hopper is empty! Or…..buy the pull behind spreader with the reachable on/off HANDLE which is much easier to locate with your hand from behind when you are driving the tractor. I’ll survive. ... show more
