Micalea Smeltzer writes books I love to read, and every time I read one of her books she makes me love her writing even more. This is the beginning of her “The Boys” series and man it does its job. Besides being an amazing story it sets up a whole new world with a cast of characters that you can’t help but fall for. You are going to want to go to Mascen’s baseball games and maybe hang out at Aldridge U for a weekend. But you are going to fall in love right along with them. Mascen and Rory’s love story started when they were 8 & 10 when they got married under a tree in the backyard with Rory’s sister acting as a minister. If only life was that simple, but that would have been a super short story if Micalea left it at that. What we got instead is a carefully woven tapestry of emotion, self accountability and acceptance. We got a story of two people who were meant to be, and it takes them minute to figure out what we already know, but once they get there it’s magic. There are more books in this series, with all the other characters we love, so jump right in, and fall in love with Micalea’s storytelling, because it’s one of a kind!

After reading my first book by Micalea Smeltzer in 2017, I wanted to read another book by her. I never would have guessed that it would take me 7 years though. Bad Boys Break Hearts was right up my alley. And if I would have paid closer attention, I would have known that The Boys is a spin-off. I only realized this while reading. Because at one point I really wished I had read Maddox and Emma's story (Last To Know - Willow Creek series book #1) before diving into this book. Rory's sparkly personality vs. Mascen's broody "I keep everything bottled up inside me" is what makes their banter entertaining. Which is also thriving the story. I can't say this is a typical bully romance. Hence I wouldn't classify it as such. It is more a coming of age story. A Friends to enemies to lovers romance. A very enjoyable as such.

Loved this book! There were so many components! Just how Rory and Mascen had gone from friends to enemies over time made it juicy, but then, throw in a love triangle when the best friend becomes involved! Wow! I think the college age generation is one of my favorites to read. We didn't miss out on any steamy scenes, either! I'm looking forward to reading more from this series!

3.5 stars Going into this I did have some expectations of what the vibe I wanted to get while reading this bad boy romance, but I didn’t get that vibe so it did color my judgement of the book as a whole so this review might be a little bias. Mase just didn’t give me bad boy vibes even if he had a rep on campus and he did bully Rory slight. He was really a sweetheart, and I really liked him because he had such depth to him. The bully aspect just felt a little weak in my opinion and didn’t lend to that angsty and later totally worship feeling that I expect from bully romances. I didn’t really feel that heat that I wanted between them. I never felt that their relationship was more than physical until the last third. It didn’t feel like the epic, deep seated love. I didn’t like the whole conflict with Cole. I thought it was just weak when there could have been so many more conflicts that could have been used more to make it more intense. Overall it wasn’t bad but I was expecting so much more.

3.5 STARS!!! This was a good standalone story. I enjoyed the main characters Mascen, Aurora and Cole, and I enjoyed the side characters. I think that Cole's feelings could have been spared if Mascen and Aurora had just been honest with him from the very beginning about their childhood. The cat and mouse game that Mascen and Aurora played at times was exhausing. However, there was no denying the attraction and chemistry between the two of them from the very start. Baseball was a huge part of Mascen's life so I wished that there was more than one scene with it in this story. This story was one that had pain and love, laughs and tears, touching and steamy moments with a sweet ending for Mascen and Aurora. I'm looking forward to reading Cole's story because he was a good guy and best friend, and he deserves his HEA.

This is the second book I’ve read by Micalea Smeltzer. The first being Last to Know. I didn’t realize this book followed the son of the couple in LtK! That was a really nice surprise. It made me want to reread Emma and Maddox’s story and pick up where I left off with Willow Creek. (Along with reading all of Smeltzer’s other books cause there were connections galore in this one). "He can act like a bully all he wants, but he’ll never get me where he wants me." Bad Boys Break Hearts is a standalone, enemies to lovers college romance. It follows grumpy baseball player Mascen and hardworking, witty Aurora “Rory”. The two used to be friends when they were kids, but Rory’s life pulled her in a different direction. Now reunited at college, it’s not a welcomed surprise on either end. Mascen is not the boy she remembers and Rory has dealt with things he has no clue about during their time apart. The only thing they appear to be on the same page for is their fiery attraction to one another. "Mascen Wade seems more like a ghost than a human." This book started off slow for me, but I ended up really loving it. Mascen’s relationships, including the one with himself, were especially interesting to me. It was more than a typical bad boy story. I loved how everything developed and the growth Mascen experienced in this book. "If anyone was ever going to be my girl it had to be you, Princess.” Mascen and Aurora had real chemistry. It was rocky watching the two push and pull each other and struggle with being vulnerable. There was something sweet about these two. I would love to see more about them in the future. Check this book out if you like enemies-to-lovers, sports romance, college romance, and character growth.

Micalea Smeltzer has been one of my favorite discoveries this past year! I am so excited to keep diving into her backlist. I read her book, Sweet Dandelion, last winter and absolutely loved it. This book was recommended by a few friends, and I put off reading it for a while, but I am so glad I picked it up! I wanted to read it ahead of her upcoming release, Nice Guys Don’t Win, where we get to see Cole’s story. After reading this, I couldn’t be more excited to pick it up when it releases on May 19th. Back to Mascen and Rory, I loved this book from the start! It took me back to why I love new adult romance. They have a complicated relationship, to say the least. While they have a strong history, a lot has changed and affected who they both grew up to be. It is fun to see parts of their childhood unfold throughout the story and memories revisited, especially as we meet Mascen’s family. For me, this was the perfect mix of angst, waiting for the right time, hate-to-love, and rebuilding a relationship along the way. One other favorite about this book is the setting. I really just loved how Micalea set up the college, Rory’s workplace, Mascen’s family home, and all of the other locations we visit throughout the story. I am a very visual person, and I felt like I was right there with the characters as the story was happening. If you like college, new adult romance, go pick this one up right now! It was just the right amount of familiar and comforting, but still, it’s own fresh story, and I loved it from start to finish. 5/5 Stars

Normally enemies to lovers/second chance romances start out in a odd beginnings but this particular one, it was one of those exceptions. I actually read this one in a half day!!! I’m really impressed the lead heroine is a regular young woman with glasses but tough as nails with a good heart and has her own flaws, shortcomings and a troubled past. Rory aka Aurora like the character in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty is someone who doesn’t let the harsh outside world dictate how she lives her life and she does it well despite of the awkward reunion with Mascen. The hot, sexy but moody lead male character, Mascen on the other hand, yeah definitely is something else. He got that moody, alpha sexy thing going on. Surprisingly, he’s the star college pitcher at the university where he and Rory are reunited for the first time in ten years. Unforeseen circumstances kept them apart mostly on Rory’s part that made their first reunion start in a rocky start. What I liked most about their love story is it had something real and sweet/sexy/heartfelt roll in one. Also it tackles sensitive issues regarding suicide of a loved one mainly surrounding Rory’s father. It had some really sexy moments between Rory and Mascen!! I’m glad I bought one of the interesting enemies to lovers/second chance novels. It didn’t irritate me at all. It was good!!!
