Bought this for the spoke shave and haven't had a chance to try it yet. I have however tried out the palm plane. The blade is hard to set and the wedge loosens up after a few strokes.     • As expected for price. Decent quality, bad finish tho, needed some adjustments
Decent for the price. My main complaint is that the adjustment knobs didn't work because of large burrs on the brass. I knocked them off with a file, and it works fine now. The bottom of the spoke shave has specks of paint chunks or something, so I took a second to flatten that. Blade is sharp enough to start using, right away l, but I would sharpen it. They may have ruined the temper on the blade when grinding tho, I will update if I have to re-temper it. All in all I'm not displeased. I expected to have to make some modifications with it considering the price. It's sturdy enough that I don't worry about breaking it, that's what I was hoping for the most. The plane is even usable out of the box, obviously I would sharpen it better, but it took some decent shavings without it. No other adjustment was needed once the blade was seated properly. ... show more

The Metal Planes carbon steel blade is very nice quality having a nice fine sharp blade and is very durable it is also very easily adjustable simply removing the screws and sliding into desired position.. The Spoke-shave tool has an intuitive flat base and a good weight for the handles making it easy to use and give better precision for finer cuts on the woodworking project at hand. The quality of this hand woodworking tool is better than expected, the material is certainly good quality and feels like it will last a long time with good durability through the whole unit. Both pieces have a user-friendly shape giving it suitable ergonomics fitting in you hand comfortably making it easier to use. The best feature listed that is an honest one is the- Easy Operation For Wood Working. The use of double-screw adjustment screw, you can easily adjust the planing thickness lock stable planing smooth.Comfortable contoured handles and Corrosion-resistant epoxy coating. Though I do wish it had a bit more space for larger and for versatile adjustments, due to its limitations this tool is more restricted for the uses it will have on the project. ... show more

    • Good spokeshave, unusable plane
The spokeshave is good enough and does the job. It requires some setting up initially, as mine didn’t have a flatbread sole due to the paint having small “bumps”. No big deal, just need to sand it flat. The blade came fairly sharp, was easy to hone to a really sharp edge, and holds an edge for long enough. Got very good results carving low radius curves and tool handles. Higher radius curves would require a round bottom spokeshave so this is something to consider before buying. The plane on the other hand is totally unusable. The mouth is way too big. The wedge is made of light material (not solid wood), does not stay in place (meaning the blade is not held in place either), and gets very easily and heavily dented with the slighted hammering. ... show more

The blade on the little plane is very far from flat. they might have stamped mine the wrong way. the blade on the spoke shave surprised me by having the blade area get flat enough very quick... and I bought it for the spoke shave... so the little plane blade taking longer to sharpen means if its just junk, it still seems like an ok value. the spoke blade looks like it may have lost it's heat treatment when they were grinding though. i would pay more for a better one. ... show more

    • Use is therapeutic...
The spokeshave is like an old pair of jeans or sneakers. It's comfortable and easy to relax with. I found myself getting lost in focus while using this thing. The rhythm of the curls leaping off of the wood surface gives me a sense of peace. May sound corny, but I do some of my best thinking while shaving a piece of my work. I recommend this combo highly! ... show more
