  • Very good laptop for the price
Style: Notebook Only
I had a different brand laptop that was a few years old and the video card suddenly crashed and I could not use an external monitor either so I had to replace it. I decided to give the Acer Aspire 5 a try and it really surprised me and out performed my expectations. I really like the expansion cable and SSD drive holder that comes with it. Acer was very smart allowing such an easy upgrade as I added another SSD drive and I also upgraded my ram. This model has the ram built in to the mother board and has only 1 expansion slot so that is the only drawback I could find but for the price and all the extras that it comes with I can deal with 1 expansion slot as it is fast and great for the office and very lightweight for travelling. The battery lasts and lasts and I like the lighted keyboard. Although it is not the most powerful laptop one could use for gaming it is still pretty fast. It is lightweight as well. It is a wonderful laptop for the price and it is great for work as I mentioned earlier the battery lasts and lasts. I am very pleased with the quality of this laptop especially for the price and would recommend it - it is great for work and has good video quality as well as sound quality for zoom meetings etc. If you are looking for a gaming laptop then it may not be the top choice but for an all around laptop it is a very good laptop for the price. ... show more

  • Solid laptop for the $$$
Style: Notebook Only
Purchased this laptop because I didn't want to use my gaming rig for work and other basic tasks. Build quality is far better than I expected at this price point. Sure, it would be great to have a solid aluminum case instead of just the top, but that is to be expected for the price. Took it apart as soon as it was delivered so I could add a 8gb ram stick and a second ssd. Installation was super easy. Kudos to acer for adding the ability to install a 2.5" hard drive with provided hardware. Not many other rigs at this price point that have a second drive option. You can also upgrade the nvme drive if you want to. Backlit keyboard is also a huge plus and it is the perfect brightness in my opinion. Keyboard is comfortable to type on and the addition of a 10 key is another bonus at this price point. Screen is nice and bright with no glare. Honestly a much better picture quality than I expected for a sub $500 laptop. It has all the ports you need to get the job done. 2x usb 3 1x usb 2 1x usbc "Out only unfortunately" You have to charge the laptop with included charger. Lan/Ethernet Headphone jack Performance is where this laptop really shines. I am dual booting the stock windows 11 and linux mint. Both run flawlessly and super fast. Hasn't slowed down at all with multiple apps and browser tabs running at once. Everything runs just as fast as my desktop gaming rig. Would't run any high end games on it of coarse since it is not built for that and has no deddicated video card. Pretty sure you could run minecraft or wow/diablo on lower settings. Battery life is also amazing. I am getting about 8 hours of usage before I plug the battery in at 30%. That is with full screen brightness, wifi and bluetooth enabled. It took 10 hours to completely drain the battery after the first charge. I would recommend this laptop to anyone that wants a solid rig at a great price for everything other than gaming. It is also very light for a full featured laptop, so it would be a great choice for school or business for someone that needs/wants to carry around a full sized laptop. I don't think you could find a better laptop for a student at this price. ... show more

  • Great price for ton of features
Style: Notebook Only
I bought this for my wife as an alternative to the MacBook Air. The screen is obviously not as crisp, but this model has backlit keyboard, a decent sized SSD (love the ease of adding another SSD or extra RAM), and a 1080p camera, to do everything one might need to work online. It took several hours to set up with all the system updates (there are half a dozen or more), and to tweak settings, as Windows sets up a lot of defaults I disagree with. Some folks have complained about quality control issues, and the boot recovery has been tweaked so that I can’t set the timeout on keyboard backlight (as some comments have mentioned) but this is a solid performer so far, especially at less than $500. Giving only 4 stars at the moment to see if screen hinge (mentioned as #1 quality control problem) causes problems, as my wife has only had for a few weeks. So far, though, as a Mac guy, I’m impressed. UPDATE: 6 weeks in, still performing well. My only criticism is that power source is a small brick, which is awkward for travel (as opposed to a USB-C charge cord or similar). If you can find for less than $400 this is a solid option. Sticking to 4 stars, but would give 4.5. UPDATE 2 (RAM): The model A515-45-R74Z has only 1 extra DDR4 RAM slot (not 2 as per other Aspire models). I tried to upgrade with 16GB chip from Acer with correct specs (3200Mhz, 1.2v, CL22), but after two separate tries, it would not turn on (note to Acer: your site is not helpful for finding proper RAM chip selection for your models). Thinking that a 16GB chip was too much to handle, an 8GB chip from Crucial worked like a charm (CT8G4SFRA32A). Lesson: don't get Acer RAM DDR4s, get from reliable third-party. Note also there's a RAM total limit of 32GB (allegedly), so don't purchase chip over 24GB. BOTTOM LINE: solid performer, better than average if you manage to get one without quality control issues, and with OneDrive cloud backup I'm not worried about losing files if it dies. ... show more

  • Excellent for my needs
Style: Notebook Only
It does really well for 90% of my needs from a laptop. The only thing I wish it had was better speakers. It's nearly impossible to hear if there is any background noise - even turned all the way up. Otherwise, the perfect computer for my needs with 3d printing and other design work.
