  • Great, but you may have to change out some hardware depending on your crossbars
Color: Black
Make sure that you either have someone able to help you put your kayak on top of your car, or that you are able to do it solo before you buy these racks. I realized when making sure of this that if my 4-Runner was a little taller, putting my kayak up myself would be nearly impossible. Starting off with initial impressions, when I unpacked everything it appears to be all decent quality hardware and the tube thickness of the J-Racks themselves appears adequate to me. Speaking of that, don't forget to weigh your kayak(s) and compare it with the recommended load of both these and your crossbars. I have an Old Town Loon 12' which I found weighed 50 pounds so I was not worried about having two similar kayaks on these. Assembly is pretty straightforward. It is a little not quite as expected so check the directions, however there was one slightly different way that I decided to do it. There are two small rectangular rubber sheet pieces for each J-Rack assembly. These are the ones that keep your crossbars from getting scratched and also help the J-Rack securely attach to your crossbars. The directions indicate to put one of these up to the metal bottom side of the J-Rack and then to put on the washers and nuts for the carriage bolts that end up being the ones which are used to form the clamp to your crossbar. Basically, in theory this would keep that particular piece of rubber in place. Seems like a good idea, theoretically it's a piece of rubber that never needs to not be a part of the assembly right? Well, yes, except that when you tighten down the nuts you will find that it causes the rubber to stretch to accommodate the tightened bolts. So, instead I simply put on the nuts and bolts and now both pieces of rubber are put in place when I put the J-Racks on my crossbars. During the mounting on to my crossbars is where I ran in to a little bit more of a problem. The longer carriage bolts were not long enough in my case. I don't have low profile crossbars, but I suspect most people that buy these are not mounting these to low profile crossbars. Well I figured this would be no big deal, just run to a hardware store. Well, it turns out that, at least here in the USA, finding metric carriage bolts that are entirely threaded is unfortunately unlikely. So I found SAE carriage bolts which required no modifications to the J-Racks themselves, but did require that I either tighten these to my crossbars with wing nuts or that I spend another $50 on the "easier on the hands" stuff. I decided to go with wing nuts, and in a way I'm actually glad I did because it's actually not too difficult to deal with by any means. When it came time to test these and figure out mounting my Kayak on these, I discovered that while the straps these come with are good straps, they are in my opinion the wrong kind for this application. You could use them but it's more complex than it needs to be. So, I kept them as backups and instead found sets of Lashing Straps inexpensively. Keep in mind you should also have bungee cords or rope to secure the front of the kayak around and under the bumper of your vehicle where you should be able to find something to hook on to. This adds a little bit of security to your load in case you had a strap break or if your straps were not tight enough you would be able to tell by just looking at the rope/bungee cord. Keep in mind you should always have extra straps and rope just in case. During my test I found no issues and was surprised to find that highway speeds seemed to pose no problems. During an actual trip, these J-Racks encountered no issues. For 300 miles I transported a kayak with no problems. For 50 of those miles, I had a second kayak on as well. As for an funny note, having the kayak on my roof actually improved my fuel economy by 2 or 3 miles per gallon haha. Obviously your results might vary in this regard. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars. Having to go get different carriage bolts and more convenient straps is not a deal breaker, but was slightly irritating. For the price though, these are very good racks. ... show more

  • Good system for 2 kayaks
Color: Black
This is a good product with easy assembly for transporting 2 kayaks. If you already have a roof rack system and just want to transport one kayak, it is easier to just use your vehicles roof rack is what I have realized.

  • AA rack is solid, but hardware is an issue.
Color: Black
I like the product. Thi biggest issue which I'm still working on is the mounting bolts supplied aren't long enough for a Billiebars mount. When even recommended by them I had the assumption they would be a quick install. Need longer bolts!

  • Pretty good for the price. Does the job well
Color: Black
I wanted to use these racks a few times before writing a review. I'm quite satisfied with these, minus Amazon damaging the package enroute (but no bearing on the product or seller itself. A reflection of Amazon's deliver service). When it did finally arrive, it was packaged pretty well and it didn't come damaged or anything like that. The instructions were ok and see what reviewers are saying, but I'm an avid DIYer and was able to figure them out pretty easily. The first hook was a little awkward putting together, but after that, it only took me about 15 minutes to get the other 3 together. My tip for ease of assembly: I used a ratchet and socket set to put it together and tightened snug. The wrench they give you is pretty small and can see why some reviewers say it didn't seem tight after they put it together. I found it in the second package of nuts and bolts after I got the first 2 together but wouldn't of used it anyway since you can't get a lot of torque on the nuts with how small it is. Also, turn the carriage bolt while tightening to make sure it seats into the square holes. It comes out as your turning kinda easily. I feel a lot of reviewers didn't realize that or how carriage bolts work. Over all, very satisfied. They've been secure on my roof rack for a few weeks and installed easily. I do turn the knobs every time after I put my kayak in just to be sure but it's pretty secure on the crossbars and I'm not worried about them. In terms of longevity? I dunno yet. Only been using them for a month so not sure how they'll hold up over time. They seem pretty solidly built so I'm sure I'll get at least a couple years out of them before I need to repaint or put new foam on them. And still, at this price point, I can just replace them as they age and still be cheaper than the higher priced cradles. My verdict: At this price, I'm extremely satisfied with the build quality and my experience so far with these, considering the alternatives being at least double the price for only 2. If you're new to kayaking like I was and don't want to break the bank, these are worth it IMO. ... show more
