  • A solid daily driver that served me well for over a year
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: White
I have a lot of controllers... and I'm on a mission of reviewing every controller I own. Today, we'll review my first 8BitDo Ultimate - The Bluetooth version. The main reason I bought this controller was as an option to replace a Switch Pro Controller. I bought it a little bit after the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro and it was between those for which I would use for Switch... ultimately the KingKong 2 ended up being used for Switch (at least until it lost my trust... I probably won't review that controller since it's no longer available, but long story short it went haywire on me while playing, twice) and I adopted this as my new main PC controller after the right bumper went bad on my Elite 2. I even bought the buttons from 8BitDo in order to convert it to Xbox layout ABXY. Features: Face buttons are standard membrane. dpad is old school feeling membrane with center pivot. Profile switch and home buttons are tactile. Triggers are hall effect and have good resistance to me (subjective). Special Features: The standout features that attracted me to this controller were.... - Hall Effect Joysticks - Multiple Game Profiles - Mappable Back Buttons - Wakes switch (was the first 8BitDo to do so!) In general, all of these features work as advertised, though compared to some other options, I would say the mappable back buttons are not as capable as other controller options today. 8BitDo software kind of has a macro builder where you build your macro, rather than other options that let you just record the inputs. This makes it such that there's no way to create macros which rely on buttons being held while others are being pressed, one button must end before the next begins. This unfortunately limited it's functionality for me in games like FFXIV, in which the trigger buttons must be held down to execute skills. By the time I switched to this controller though I was no longer raiding, so that limitation didn't end up being a deal breaker for me and it was still better than needing to buy a third party application to make macros at all, so I'll give it a pass. Shake to wake with Switch is a bit hilarious, but it works. QC / Durability Concerns: I haven't had any issues with this controller at all. There is wear from the plastic to plastic rub of the joystick with the controller face, but otherwise it generally looks fine. Maybe get black if you are concerned with grime and don't clean your controllers often. Functionality: In general, I have nothing to complain about as far as functionality. Everything works solidly, though the resolution of the hall effect sticks is certainly lower than the resolution of the Xbox Elite 2. You can tell this when you do operations such as changing the time of day in Genshin Impact - you can easily get it to register minute by minute with the Elite 2, but usually the 8BitDo Ultimate skips a few minutes when you rotate it. My my case, this does not affect game play, but perhaps if you need the ultimate level of precision this controller may not be suitable for you. A staple of my controller reviews... the Tetris dpad test. I play games on Tetris at as fast of a pace as I can (I'm roughly a 1 minute sprinter in modern Tetris games) and see how many false hard drops I get. Generally, 8BitDo controllers do well in this test for me, but I seem to be more prone to make accidental hard drops on this controller than I do on the Pro 2. In general though, this controller would fall somewhere below Xbox Elite 2 with cross dpad installed, other options with tactile / clicky dpads, and the 8BitDo Pro 2 (my current go to)... probably a little worse than the IINE Candy Pop controller I recently reviewed, but certainly not embarrassing like the Switch Pro controller. In Conclusion: For the price of this controller I think you get a lot from it, but if you are looking for a PC controller today I'd probably go with another option. If you are looking for a Switch Pro alternative though, I think this is still a pretty good option. It's very responsive on Switch and I still use a limited edition variant of this controller on Switch today. For PC though, I think there are better options for not a lot more of your hard earned money. Still though if this is your only option, I can recommend it as a solid reliable option. If PC is your intent though and you won't play on Switch ever, you can save $10 by getting the 2.4G version of the controller and you'll have the Xbox layout by default. Back when I bought this one, that variant didn't have hall effect joysticks, but now it does so you don't really lose any functionality except Switch connectivity. ... show more

  • Easily 8Bitdo's Best Controller Ever Made
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: Black
Been using this controller on Windows 10. Another person mentioned the Switch waking experience, which is fair, and is a more representative review of the Switch experience. For Windows 10, this controller is incredible. What a great idea, to have the dongle in the back of the charging dock built in. Its so clean, and the charging dock is the most premium I've ever owned honestly (it holds the controller in place via a soft magnet and the white glow at the bottom of the dock looks so sleek!). I have experienced zero input delay when using this 2.4 GHz dock connected to my PC, and the controller automatically powers down when placed in the dock, and when picked up automatically reconnects to your PC without pressing a button. This works flawlessly and sounds minor, but on top of the controller itself being solid it makes the whole PC Users Experience amazing, especially if you're used to using Xbox controllers which aren't always reliable via Bluetooth. The controller itself is solid. Its not as big and thick as an Xbox or Dualsense controller, but another review mentioned it being too small and I just dont agree with that, at least for most people. Its definitely bigger than a dualshock 4, and people have been using those for nearly a decade with no issue. The thumbsticks are the best on any controller, full stop, and you feel it right away. Only thing Ive tried that may be better are the steam deck analog sticks, but other than that nothing comes close. I have not personally had issues with the D Pad yet, the triggers are fine, I actually really like the course texture in the back for extra grip, and the 8Bitdo software customization has worked seamlessly for me so far in mapping button inputs to the back paddles. Also, this controller is detected as X Input, meaning the PC will think its an Xbox layout controller, but it has the button layout of a Switch Pro controller. This can be corrected in software to use the button letters labeled on the controller if this bothers you. Overall, this is probably the best PC wireless controller on the market. 8bitdo did not pay me, I often do not like their other controllers for a variety of reasons lol (stick layout, small size, retro-focused, etc). This is just a fantastic device for PC Users. If anything I said sounds appealing to you, then know that is what you're getting with this device. The only possible "improvement" I could ask for with the controller is maybe the trigger feel, and maybe the overall grip feel, just because the dualsense is better in both those regards (and is also funded by a much larger R&D entity). But that is me really nitpicking since I would still give both those attributes a great score. Love this controller, hope it lasts me for many years ... show more

  • I really like this controller!
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: White
I'm a very casual "gamer" and don't usually spend money for gadgets and gismos aplenty. But I like my Switch and wanted a controller that wasn't the joycons. Thing that caused me to buy this one as compared to others? The 2.4 gHz bit. You can keep the little dongle plugged into the stand for the controller (which is in itself pretty nice) and as long as the stand is plugged into the switch (for, you know, power and charging and stuff) it will still allow you to use it on the switch. If it doesn't work, go into your Switch settings and find Procontroller setting and start turning stuff off and on. One of those settings is by default set in such a way it makes the controller unusable in 2.4 gHz mode. I don't remember which setting it is, but I do remember there is only two or three and every time I've set it up I've just done the whole, "Turn this off, does it work? No? Turn it back on and turn the next one off, does it work? Yes? Done." thing. Takes like one minute. Just know you can make it work and it's great. All other things? -Battery life: Seems good! I rarely play for more than a few hours so read another review to find out if it can withstand 48 hour marathons. -Comfort: It is, in fact, comfortable for my play sessions (which, as you may remember, tend to only last a few hours or less). -Connectability: I can't wake my switch up with it in 2.4 mode. I can in bluetooth however by giving it a good shaky shake. But, I rarely bother with this and instead keep it in 2.4 mode, stand up, push the power button on my switch, and get ready to blow minds with my awesome Mario jumps (full disclosure: I'm crap at video games regardless of how much I like them and no one's mind has, to the best of my knowledge, ever been "blown" by my Mario jumps). Although I don't buy many controllers, I do have a few friends that do, and I've witnessed struggles with bluetooth disconnecting. Which is why I wanted the 2.4g mode. And I think, to date after having used it as my primary controller for seven months now, it has disconnected once for about ten seconds. And I'm not sure that was even a disconnection. The controller was just suddenly off. At which point I wondered "Did I do that on accident? I might have... I'm pretty crap at making Mario jump and my thumbs have little minds of their own and might have pushed the power button or something," turned the controller back on, felt it reconnect (it gives a cute little vibrate when it connects) and it has never happened again. -Does other fun stuff: It vibrates (cutely), responds when Mario is next to a power moon in Odyssey by giving said cute vibration, lets me do all the shaky shake things that makes cappy go flying in the appropriate direction and makes Glidons stay airborne longer. I don't think it does the "make action figures give me things in the game" stuff (I cannot remember what they are called... something like Amoebas?), which is fine for me but maybe something you want. All in all, I like this controller. For a casual "gamer" who only plays Switch and wants a controller that doesn't get disconnected hardly ever, it's perfect. ... show more

  • Pretty good, but could be better
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: White
I've had this controller a few days now and have used it with Mario Kart on Switch, Mario Kart Wii (on Dolphin) and Sonic All Stars Racing on Steam. Getting it configured is a bit of a mystery. Build quality - Seems really solid. (However, see "Comfort" below.) Switch - Works great with Switch. Dolphin - Works great once you figure out how to configure the Motion Simulation. As an example, connect via Bluetooth (see "Connection Oddness" below), go to into the Motion Simulation tab on Dolphin, right click on the Tilt->Forward box. Now scroll down to and select "Accel Right" and set the multiplier to about 10%. Configure other options as desired. (I know that's a bit of hand waving, but maybe it will help someone get started in the right direction.) Steam - I had some success with Sonic racing, but half way through the race, it stops reading the gyro... not once, but every time. Not sure if that is a problem with the controller, Steam or Sonic racing. Since the controller works fine with Switch and Dolphin, I'm thinking Steam or Sonic are the source of the problem. I prefer steering with the gyros rather than thumbsticks. Keep in mind that using this as a Switch pro controller in steam will affect Dolphin, so watch out for that if you use both. There are some suggestions out there on the web to configure this controller in Steam and then launch Dolphin from within Steam but I could never get it to work correctly. Connection Oddness - Another oddity that I ran into was the whole Bluetooth vs 2.4 Ghz dongle question. 8BitDo's docs sort of tell you to use the dongle for Windows. When I did, it connected as an XBox controller... no gyros. With Bluetooth it was identified as a "Pro Controller" ... gyros. The other crazy thing I found was, that I had to first connect this controller to Windows with Bluetooth (it will say something like "unkown" controller). Then switch (not Nintendo) to connecting with the dongle (Windows will see it as an Xbox Controller), then I had to remove the dongle and switch back to Bluetooth. Only then would it recognize the controller as a "Pro Controller". I know it sounds crazy and makes no sense (I'm a software developer and it makes no sense to me), but I confirmed this on two different Windows 10 machines. Comfort - There are a lot of people out there who rave about how great this controller is. However, it could definitely be improved in terms of comfort. There is a sharp edge all along the top area of the grip. Not "cutting" sharp, just "uncomfortable to grip" sharp. I can't understand how this thing went to production with this design. The bottom is nice and smooth yet easy to hold on to; the top side is where the problem is. Look at the pictures and you will probably be able to see what I am talking about. Power - I'm tempted to take another star off here, but it is a just a preference thing. I much prefer a battery compartment. That gives me the option of using my own rechargeables or using alkaline batteries. It should by MY decision. This has an inaccessible rechargeable battery. We all know it will eventually go bad, then what? Disassemble the controller, and hope I can get it all back together? The internal is Li-ion, which will last longer between charges than my rechargables, sure. That might be an advantage, just not my preferred approach. Dongle Storage - This is definitely a plus! The charger dock has dongle storage so you don't misplace it. Nice. With all of these critiques I'm still giving it 4 stars. It seems solidly built. It works great once you get it properly configured. One star off for the grip design. ... show more

  • This is a must have controller
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: Black
I love 8bitdo. I have a few different controllers from them, but this is a whole new level of wow. The best part of this company is the care and attention to every little aspect of their products. But why is this the best controller out of any on the market? The quality. The feel. The joysticks are Hall Effect joysticks (meaning the chances of getting joystick drift are drastically reduced). The features packed in are plentiful. You can connect this model (Bluetooth) using 3 different connection options. - First of course is Bluetooth 5.0. Perfect for the Nintendo Switch (cannot power on the system from sleep) or Steam Deck (may require firmware update). It does NOT support HD rumble or amiibo functionality with the Switch. - Then you have 2.4 GHz (with the included USB adapter that hides safely away until needed in the charging base). 2.4 GHz is ideal for PC gaming. - Last, you have a USB connection. Side note: Raspberry Pi users, don't purchase this for your Retropie builds. Currently there are issues with the drivers getting confused and it doesn't work right. The control has different programable modes that can be switched to on the fly. There is an app on Windows 10+, iOS and Android that you can use to program the modes. It takes some experimenting and learning but that's a fun side project of endless possibilities. Use YouTube. It helps. The cherry on top of this sweetness, is the charging base. A flourish for those who take pride in their gaming setup's look. It easily rests in and starts charging, with a breathing LED light on the base. If you are torn between getting the 2.4 G version or the Bluetooth version, spring for the Bluetooth. It's a step up and gives you more versatility with where you can use the controller. Well worth the extra money. In for a penny, in for a pound. The button faces mimic a Nintendo Switch Controller. If you want Xbox button faces, you have to get the 2.4 G model. I prefer this over my Nintendo Pro Controller now. It just feels better to me. Bravo 8bitdo! ... show more

  • Fantastic Controller -- Preferred over the Switch Pro Controller and KingKong 2 Pro
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: Black
I bought my 8BitDo controller last July, six months ago. In that time period it has become my favorite controller on the Switch. It's quality. It doesn't feel cheap or overly-light, and the buttons and joysticks feel solid. There is no risk of your joysticks drifting, like with a Switch Pro. It's hardy, as well; I've had a few instances of the controller accidentally falling off a table onto a hard floor, or one of the kids stepping on it, and the controller hasn't malfunctioned at all. The kinds of games I primarily play are Smash Bros. Ultimate and Hades, though I'll also play games like Mario Kart and Mario Party with the family. This controller works fantastically with all of those games; in particular the controller has been wonderful in Elite Smash, being very responsive with virtually no noticeable latency issues. On top of all that, it just feels good to hold. I'm told that people with very large hands may struggle with this controller, as it is slightly smaller than a Smash Pro controller, but I'm inclined to think that most people will prefer the size and feel of an 8BitDo controller (unless you just happen to have unusually large hands). And the charging station was a great addition, as well. All in all, this was what I was looking for in a controller. In my opinion, it is the best controller you can buy for the Switch. EDIT: My pet rabbit gnawed the joystick off of my controller, so I ordered a new one here. I was stunned to find that the joysticks drifted, right out of the box. This was meant to not be possible with these controllers. I have no idea how this has happened, but I'm pissed. ... show more

  • OK controller. Motion controls do not work on PC. Edit: Left joystick broke.
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: White
Edit: No joke, only a few hours after writing this review my left joystick has started bugging out. When I hold forward, the stick seems to sometimes think I'm only pressing it about 90%-ish the way forward, making movement inconsistent and making a game like Dark Souls practically unplayable as it thinks I'm walking instead of holding forward all the way to run at normal speeds. I was gonna deal with the controller in its less-than-perfect state, but now looks like I have to return it. Original review: This is not necessarily a bad controller, but I have to say it's not what I was expecting considering what people say about 8bitdo. After using it for a little over a week now, I have some thoughts. I'll start with the good. Pros: - The back grip buttons are very nice to have, and feel great to press. Nice and tactile -- not too clicky, not too mushy. - The profile switching feature has been very useful. Being able to have set profiles, and switch between them on the fly, is pretty sweet, especially for reconfiguring the back buttons. - The charging dock is sweet. I never have to worry about the batteries dying, and it's just a nice little stand to place the controller on. Magnetized so I don't have to worry about making sure it's seated properly. - The ergonomics are pretty solid, with one minor exception I mention in the cons section. Specifically, claw grip feels very comfortable which cannot be said for certain controllers (looking at you, Dualsense). The controller also feels nice and light. Mid: - The value is.... okay. If you compare it to an Xbox controller, you're essentially paying $20 more for back grip buttons, profile switching, hall effect joysticks, more compatibility, and the included dongle + charging dock. Seems like a pretty good deal, except for the fact that the Xbox controller has markedly better build quality and slightly better ergonomics. So while it may seem like a really good value, there are definitely some trade-offs you're making by going with the 8bitdo. The xbox controller just feels better to use, honestly. - I didn't want to put this as a con, as it may very well be something specific to my system (and it's not a huge deal anyways), but after closing the controller configuration application -- without fail -- my PC starts to hang up and I have to reboot. I have zero idea why this is happening, but again not a huge deal as I've only had to use the software once or twice so far. Cons: - Motion controls do not work on PC. I have to say it feels pretty scammy to advertise the motion controls and not mention that they just straight up do not work. That was a big part of why I bought this thing in the first place -- I've gotten used to it on the Steam Deck, as it's a great way to add a little more precision to traditional analog stick aiming (and I just can't get down with the little trackpads). Really disappointed that isn't an option, even though it was advertised. - The shoulder buttons are honestly garbage. They just feel super mushy and sticky, and they're a little loose so the controller rattles when you shake it as a result. - The back grip buttons need to be placed higher IMO. I have big hands and even then it's still a rather uncomfortable stretch for me to be in position for both the back grips and the shoulder buttons. - The d-pad is also rather mushy-feeling, especially when you compare it to the Xbox Series controller which has a super nice and clicky d-pad. - Connectivity is pretty good, but not great -- there have been a couple of instances where it's just randomly disconnected, and I'm sitting a mere <2 meters away from the dongle with nothing blocking the way. Overall I think I'm gonna have to look elsewhere for my next controller. It's not horrible, but considering 8bitdo's reputation, I was expecting something a lot better. Probably a better idea to just save up and get an Xbox elite controller IMO, at least if you're a PC gamer like me. ... show more

  • One of the best controllers out there (with a few caveats)
Style: Ultimate Controller Color: White
This is hands down the best 3rd party switch controller: Pros: - feels great - charging cradle - wonderful d-pad (seriously, I have a switch pro controller and the dpad on that is awful, bounces inputs to other directions all the time; this one is absolutely solid!) - excellent gyro control support (for you Splatoon players) - fully programmable buttons with Ultimate software on 3 different profiles with full macro support (no recording though). 2 paddle buttons are on the back of the controller for programming, but any button can be programmed - hall effect sticks which (if claims are to be believed) should prevent drift from ever occuring. - excellent PC support (no gyro unless paired as a switch controller, but that's more on Microsoft not providing an API for gyro on xinput) Cons: - default rumble intensity is nuts. So much it interferes with gyro controls. I had to create a profile with the ultimate software and crank the settings down to a 2 from a 5. I don't have an 8bitdo Pro 2 controller to compare, but most people say it's the same as that controller. - no Amiibo support (that's a pretty standard omission with third party controllers though). - no Apple or Android device support (yet). Not a problem for me, but may be an issue if you want to use this on an iPad. If you need that, you probably want the Pro 2 from 8bitdo instead. - Ultimate software has been finicky for me. Mostly works, but has quirks. Programming my switch profiles with the PC software didn't work, but the android app did. Windows profiles programmed correctly with the PC software. Hopefully it's just isolated bugs they get fixed. One of the best PC and Switch controllers on Amazon. ... show more
