    • Digs aggressively but with limited ability to get soil out of the hole

I used this device to make holes for the legs of garden trellises. I found that it can dig a hole approximately 1.6" wide to a maximum depth of about 14.5" in moist, rock-free soil. It can dig such holes very quickly. However, I have not tried it in dry, hardened soil and I also doubt that it could cope with stones in its path bigger than, maybe, 1/2" diameter and not too numerous. My reservation is that the flutes extend from the bottom of the auger up only 5.5", meaning that the device can only raise the soil it is digging up 5.5". This is a real problem if you are trying to dig a hole deeper than 5.5". I tried lifting the drill and auger up out of the hole periodically as I was digging, attempting to raise and fling off loose soil in the hole, but I did not find this technique to be very effective, especially with wet soil clinging to the flutes. ... show more

Nice assortment of sizes. I bought them for an off-label use - drilling "pilot holes" before using a larger gas-powered earth auger, and also to mix small batches of concrete (either in a hole or bucket). The long 2 inch auger worked great for this, but I did have two minor problems. The long 2 inch auger is in two parts that screw together. When I was drilling a deep hole in dense clay, I needed to reverse the drill to get it out, and that caused the threads that hold the two parts together to come undone. I fixed that by chasing the threads with a tap and die, and using threadlocker to keep them from coming apart. The other minor issue was that the long auger was not quite straight, causing a little wobble. I think I would knock off a 1/2 star for that if I could, but otherwise seems like a reasonable quality for the price. I didn't try the other sizes in the set, but they look fine and useful for planting. ... show more
