We purchased several augers of different sizes to use with our Hammer Drill. When used reasonably, we've had good success - used a larger bit to drill holes for fertilizer, for example. We're not so sure any of the "garden drill bits" would work well with a regular drill. Several reviewers have said the soil must be soft and root free. The smaller drill bits are easier to use but any may grab on a stone or root, so you need to keep a good grip on the power tool. If you really want a time saver though, a hammer drill is not so expensive and will solve a lot of the aggravation others described. ... show more

We have really tough clay soil packed with lots of roots so digging holes is really tough. My hands are week because I had hand surgery last year so I bought this thinking I could just use my husbands drill to plant. The problem is it twists my hands up really bad because I’m not strong enough to control it. However my husband was able to use it and easily make great holes for even large 2-3 gallon plants. The key is to do little bits at a time in a circle just working your way down deeper. It is a slower process but it gets the job done easily. We bought this to plant daffodil bulbs. Worked well. We use it with a battery powered drill. We seem to have a problem with the drill chuck staying tight, not sure if it is the drill or the torque on the long bit. We have since used it to plant gladiola corns and tree plugs successfully. Had some large rootbound dead plants, but this handy little auger loosened the soil enough to save the pots and allow me to remove dead roots and plants. I was able to loosen and refresh soil in some smaller planting areas. Hints it will work as good as your hand drill and battery power allows. Up your clutch and settings for higher power. Wife and I had 200 pine seedling trees to plant. We had also bought a $70 dibbling tool. Got this from Amazon because it sounded cool and figured we try it. At the end of the day, we had completed all 200 trees in about 5 hours with the auger, including some significant walking distance. Went through 3 full cordless drill batteries when all was done. Only drawback is when it hangs on roots or a rock, the drill will violently spin backwards and twist your wrist hard, so grip it real well. Returned the planting tool, and kept this auger.     • Digs aggressively but with limited ability to get soil out of the hole

I used this device to make holes for the legs of garden trellises. I found that it can dig a hole approximately 1.6" wide to a maximum depth of about 14.5" in moist, rock-free soil. It can dig such holes very quickly. However, I have not tried it in dry, hardened soil and I also doubt that it could cope with stones in its path bigger than, maybe, 1/2" diameter and not too numerous. My reservation is that the flutes extend from the bottom of the auger up only 5.5", meaning that the device can only raise the soil it is digging up 5.5". This is a real problem if you are trying to dig a hole deeper than 5.5". I tried lifting the drill and auger up out of the hole periodically as I was digging, attempting to raise and fling off loose soil in the hole, but I did not find this technique to be very effective, especially with wet soil clinging to the flutes. ... show more

Bought it to make holes for my fertilizer spikes. My ground is hard and when I try to hammer them in they crumble. One thing though you have to be careful and go slow because the auger goes down really fast and it will pull the drill out of your hand or twist your wrest
