  • Excellent product
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I upgraded from the Bosch 5" ROS to this one, and it was the best investment I've made in a long time. Very low vibration, very fast sanding, quiet, and excellent control. Note that this sander is designed to be operated with a vacuum or dust extractor. It will overheat if you do not have the airflow from a vacuum system helping to cool it. As far as dust port attachments go, I've managed two ways: 1) Both of the Dust Right hose kits (the flex one and the other blue one) have fittings that connect nicely to the port on this. 2) The connection for the Bosch dust extractor hose won't mate directly with the fitting on the tool, but if you purchase the 3M Filter Bag Adapter (3M part number 20453), it will allow other fittings to slide over it. I find option 2) works better for my dust collection set-up and will likely be the best solution for a few others. I spent some time on the phone with a couple of different 3M product specialists, and they were quick to point out that this sander is designed to run best with the net sanding discs. If you aren't already set up with these, plan on buying some 3M cubitron net sanding discs (the best), Mirka net sanding discs, or some other variety of net sanding discs to go with it. Avoid using sanding discs that obstruct airflow over the dust collection ports on the pad. The net sanding discs allow this tool to accomplish two very important objectives: 1) better dust collection and 2) cooling air flow to keep the motor from overheating. Finally, buy an interface pad set. The Mirka interface pads work best. If you don't, you will be replacing the included 3M "Clean Sanding" hook & loop backer pad that comes with the tool more often than you'd like. The Mirka interface pad kit (Mirka part number 9955) is the most affordable option I found, and it fits the hole pattern on the 3M "Clean Sanding" backer pads perfectly. Gripes: 1) 3M should just include the dust port bag attachment in the box. This part makes life much easier when fitting dust hoses to the tool. 2) The documentation isn't clear enough concerning the importance of using net sanding discs and a vacuum system for tool longevity. The consumer is left to discover this on their own. 3) 3M should include interface pads in the kit (at least one) and update documentation to warn that when using net discs, the hooks on the backer pad will wear and fail more quickly leading to premature backer pad replacement. Summary: Great tool, would buy again, and I do recommend this to friends and colleagues. 3M could have done better with a more comprehensive package with respect to accessories and literature. Do not run this tool without a vacuum attached to it - this will cause premature tool failure due to lack of cooling air. ... show more

  • A Great Sander ... Why One Star?
Size: 6 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I purchased this 6" sander in November 2023. I used it with a dust extractor for its entire life, and generally enjoyed the ergonomics, the power, and function of this sander. It is sized perfectly for my larger hands, and is comfortable compared to my old Makita 5". The dust collection with 3M extract sanding disks is second to none! The long extension cord, quite noise, and surface finish are all top notch. So then the question is, why am I giving it 1 star? As my shop got warmer, about 4 months later, suddenly my sander would start powering off. It was intermittent at first, but then it just wouldn't turn on. I reached out to 3M via their webpage, and they had me send it to their third party contractor for repairs under warranty. I got it back, and it was working like new again! But less than a month later, it wouldn't turn on again. I reached out again to the same repair facility, and they immediately took it in. Again, top notch service! All of these problems though are within the 1 year warranty period provided by 3M. Now, approximately 5 months out since the last repair, it does the exact same thing. It won't power on. It won't even indicate it has power. I reach out, and now, I am offered a "courtesy repair." They indicate that if I wish to return it, I need to contact the original seller. Unfortunately, I purchased it on Amazon. Despite numerous other items being offered as eligible for customer service from the exact same time period, this item is not. Listen, I get it, you can't offer to fix tools forever. But the 3M Electric Sander has been known to be a lemon. My own experience is in less than a year and a half this tool has failed 3 separate times. The problems started when this tool was under warranty and they are now denying any legal obligation to repair or just to do the right thing. The fact is, this product should have been recalled. $350-500 is too much to gamble on a tool that will likely crap out on you. I would give them a 5 out of 5, if they could just keep the tool working. I would give them a 4 out of 5 if they could just keep repairing it even. I truly enjoy using it! But now I paid for a premium sander and I have a brick. ... show more

  • Worked great….. until it didn’t
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
Best sander I’ve ever used. Low vibration not real noisy. Way more than I ever expected to spend on a sander but it came highly recommended. Then one morning it wouldn’t come on. I tried it in several outlets and tried a different tool in the original outlet. Of course Amazon said it was past the return date. I called 3m and he recommended I call Amazon customer support. They have taken it back but are very slow with the refund. Also want to charge me a restock fee?? Once everything settles I will order another one. I hope this problem has been solved. ... show more

  • Who knew sanding could be enjoyable??? Who knew sanding could be enjoyable???
Size: 6 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
This is insane. Got this after my Rigid ROS and palm sander burned out after many years & wanted to see what all the hype was with expensive sanders. Thought about festool but $700 for a sander is nutty to me especially after watching reviews of this in comparison to other sanders. Got this and the classic $300 Bosch. But I don’t see how something else could be better. I’ve done most of the sanding on 3 or 4 speed out of 8. At that, there’s hardly any vibration. Took a video and you can’t hear the sander over the air draw from a shop vac 😂 It’s almost annoying how fast this gets the job done. Like, no point to even set up for sanding. Just hold it and it’s done, when combined with the 3M Cubitron mesh. I’ve got the 120 grit on there and it ate through glue, completely smoothed out mahogany in seconds. Hard maple burl? No big deal. Epoxy? Ain’t no thang :) It’s lightweight, and on low settings, it’s easy to manage single handed, even rounding corners out and detailing with a 6” 3/16” cut. With the shop vac, I had to mod a connector to go from 2.5” to the 1.5” OD that the dust port this has, simply by sanding down the rubber to give just enough space to slip it over. No marks, nothing, even with the more aggressive orbit. Going to try it out on an epoxy surface that I’ll bring it back up to hi gloss (600grit up through 5000). At a cheaper price point that the mirka & festool, what’re you doing reading still, anon? Click buy now and don’t look back. ... show more

  • Great sander... when it works
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
Purchase and let sit for about 3 weeks till I could get thr proper adapter for the vac hose. Used it for 2 small jobs (small wood serving boards)... went to start a 3rd job and it threw electric arc's while in my hand, pushed out a bunch if smoke and was instantly dead. This was after I had the sander for 1 month and 11 days exactly. (But used it for the first time only 3 weeks prior) Amazon would not let me exchange it because it was after 1 month.... offered me a refund which I didn't want because I purchased it while on sale. (To repurchase, I would now be paying a higher amount). I contacted 3m directly and they were very helpful. I filled out a form that they emailed to me, and then received a prepaid UPS label to ship it at no expense to be either repaired or replaced. Was a quick process to start the warranty claim. It is being shipped tomorrow so I will update this review once I receive it back. Loved it while it worked.. but think I got a bad unit from factory.... because there is no reason after 3 weeks it should have done this. Update: Received the sander back from 3M... was a quick turn around (I think the time they had the sander was less than 2 days from arrival to departure) Sander runs great and hope to have no more issues with it. Warranty work is guaranteed for 1 year according to the paperwork that was sent back with it. From what I read online (true or not, I do not know), the internal circuitry on this had an 2 versions... the 1st version had overheating/melting issues and due to the high number of warranty claims, 3M redesigned it. The 2nd version of circuitry repaired all of these issues. Guessing I had the original version and now they replaced it with the second version. Still love this sander... and do reccomend it. Just keep in mind that if you have issues, 3M will stand behind their product. 3 stars due to premature failure 5 stars for operation/performance 5 stars for 3M standing behind their product and making the warranty process easy. Total... giving 4 stars (because I can't do half stars or I would give 4.5 as an average) ... show more

  • Should have went with Festool
Size: 6 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I bought the xtract 6", 3/16 random orbit sander in September of 2023. I made the decision based on the high praise it had been receiving on Youtube and from all the reviews I've read. With the 3M being about $175 cheaper than the Festool ETS150 I figured that it was a no brainer in value. I began having issues almost immediately. After about 15 minutes of continuous use on from spalted maple bench tops I was making, the sander would just shut off and the lights would flash red. This was while using 3M's own cubitron sandpaper, hooked up to a Festool CT Midi dust extractor with a 3D printed adapted to ensure a proper connection to the sander. The flashing lights indicated the sander was overheating. So I unplugged the sander and cleaned it out thoroughly with a brush and compressed air. This got the sander to run again, but the same issues would persist throughout the next few months. I've run this sander for regularly, but I'd say relatively lightly compared to more professional shops. (I'm mostly doing house renovations, guitar builds, and one off projects for friends) and this week, March of 2024, the sander just shut off in the middle of completing a very large project. I was eventually able to get it running at very low speed, but anything above the 3rd light would cause it to instantly shut off and reset the sander. Getting in contact with 3M support wasn't the worst experience, but it also wasn't easy to get to the right person to help me. Probably about an hour of total phone time and looking up different support numbers. I'm about three days into waiting for the slip to mail it back to them because they choose to mail it to you instead of emailing it. Discussing the issues the sander is having with their repair tech, he stated that it sounded like the PCB had probably fried itself. The fact that that is even a possibility to be a defect is pretty annoying. I was experiencing issues from day one and put up with them because the sander does do a good job when it is working, ran very smooth without vibrations causing fatigue, and I could usually get about 30 minutes of sanding done without overheating as long as I occasionally stopped to blow it out with compressed air. But It was essentially defective from the start and only took 6 months to completely kill itself. If I was a professional who was relying on this tool to perform for my lively hood, It would have been returned day one. When I get this back from repair it's going on FB Marketplace and I'll be purchasing the Festool ETS 150 in its place. ... show more

  • The perfect sander?
Size: 5 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I have been in the market for a top of the line sander for a long time. I think that search has ended. I enjoy woodworking as a hobby and have gone through 3 under $100 sanders in the last 1 1/2 years. After a bunch of research and ruling out of sanders that cost upwards of $700, I finally landed on this one. The difference is incredible. Paired with a dust extractor, there is literally zero fine dust in the air of my small shop while sanding. The ergonomics are also greatly improved from my past sanders. No more pain in my wrist after moving through the grits. It also seems incredibly well balanced and produces little to no vibration. I went with the 3/16” orbit and it just cruises through saw marks & router swirls making easy work of it. Would recommend this product to anyone looking to make sanding more enjoyable ... show more

  • Great just until warranty expires.
Size: 6 in, 3/16 in Orbit Pattern Name: Sander
I thought this was a great product when I got it. . .and probably still would if it worked. I'm just past the warranty period and have only used it under normal conditions in my hobby woodworking shop. For a hobby, I probably spend about 5-10 hours in the shop per week. A month ago, it started cutting out when I was working. I assumed somehow that the palm of my hand was hitting the power button so I'd turn it back on and go to work. It's gotten worse till today it will only run for about 5 seconds before dying. A new symptom finally showed up as well, now when it cuts out, even the red light is gone for a while. I set the sander down and a couple seconds later the red light comes on. I'm assuming it's loose electrical inside, but the fact that it does this with no movement and sometimes comes back up with no movement makes me wonder if the heat system is malfunctioning and cutting me off for no reason at all. For a sander this expensive that's supposed to work in industrial applications, I'm pretty annoyed. I have projects to complete and my faith in 3M is at an all time low. A lot of the early reviews were very good and it seems now there's a lot of negative. Frustrating as hell! ... show more
