This kit was very hard to install, and required a lot of modification both to the mounting plate and to the bike. Now that it is on the bike I actually really like it. But if you don’t have your own shop and confidence to mount things yourself it can be very daunting. It is not recommended for the beginner. I ended up just using 40 V battery packs that I got from Harbor freight, and they were great with a 36 V kit, I get about 2 1/2 miles of range with that. That is plenty for the family bike rides that we go on. This was written on day two and I’ve only taken it out twice but so far so good. I would say that if you are building something from scratch and not trying to retrofit the bike this works extremely well. If you’re trying to fit this on an existing bike as a plug and play option just now but it will require a lot of work. Week update: Things are still holding up. I ended up switching which bike this would go on because I found a cheap Walmart bike. Surprisingly I had to basically put the mounting plate back to the way it came with the kit. Once you get the motor on, the hard part is done. I had to modify the motor bracket a lot and shim the motor to get the gears in line to work correctly. Once that is done, it's just a matter of putting the throttle and controller where you want it and hook it all up, zip tying everything. Mine happened to have the motor connected backwards but that was just a matter of switching the motor wires. All said and done it does take some work but it seems to work well. May need a little extra fabrication depending on how your bicycle is made at the rear wheel. In my case, it was nothing that a vise and a big hammer couldn’t handle. Fun project. Has more power than I anticipated.

The motor and controller seem robust enough. I’ve got bikes with a couple thousand miles on hub motors so we’ll see how a chain drive works out. The mount is a whole different story. I don’t think that you could get a perfect universal mount. This one was cut up and a mount bracket welded to a seat stay. The end result is a nice looking and strong setup but if your not a fabricator this may not work for you. I have a full fab shop so this wasn’t a big deal. So I was initially impressed, The controller had a fairly smooth speed curve and the power output of the motor was good. However after about 2 weeks (with only using for about 3 days total) the controller died. the battery is still at 36 volts I checked with my multimeter, but nothings works. No lights light up, the motor doesn't turn, and there is no indication that anything is wrong. I just came out one morning and it wasn't working any more. I would return it, but unfortunately I had to make some alterations to get it to work for me. I built an electric wheel barrow and had to do some welding and drilling to get everything to fit. Too big for a kids bike cuz the pedal hits the motor. So it’s just a little e-bike without the ability to pedal regularly. Bought the 36v and it gets the kids up any hill and has a lot of torque so it will wheelie off you go full throttle from a stop. Took a couple hours but it is fun. Okay, so I just got this and took it out of the box. No paperwork at all! Apparently the entire instructions, packing list, and information related to installing this are contained in the 5 pictures provided on Amazon and the electrical information challenged U-tube video. FWIW, it appears from the picture of the kit that everything was in the box...so, given that, we're at 3 stars. I'll update this after I install and get the bike operational. July 31, 2020 - So, I finally got around to trying to fit the kit and am disappointed to find that the rear sprocket won't work on my '74 Schwinn Varsity. The hub diameter is 36mm where the sprocket slides over it, but the outer hole pattern limits the overall diameter where the spokes attach to the hub to 66.8 mm (2.625 inches). The trusty Schwinn is 70 mm (2.75")...so I either have to slot all of the holes or redrill at a larger diameter between the holes. Or return the kit. Down to 2 stars now due to this issue. August 17, 2020 - I ended up returning the kit. Too much work to redrill the sprocket and fabricate a proper backing plate to capture the spokes. Make sure the hub you have not only has a bearing housing < 36 mm in diameter, but also an overall diameter < 2 - 5/8" (where spokes attach). Refunded without issue. ... show more

This kit was easy to install on my trike. I built my own battery pack and frame mount but it should be just as easy on a regular bike instead of a trike. The motor runs smoothly and I ride about 3 miles a day and use the throttle to add power only when it's too hard to pedal uphill. I get lot's of exercise without too much strain. ... show more
