I received a Nest Learning Smart Thermostat for Christmas. This thermostat is Wi-Fin enabled. After following the directions in the manual, the thermostat came to life, and I was able to check the temperatures and change the settings in my Florida condo from my home in New York. I went through the whole summer with and came back to FLA in October. That's when I started having problems. The first indications were a low battery flag on the app. The Nest has a built-in battery to support some of its functions. Then one night the Nest display would not come on. I took it off the wall and connected it to a charger which charged the battery and fixed the problem. But a couple days later the Nest was dead again. I had to reinstall the old Thermostat. Referring to the Nest manual, they comment that in some heating systems, not enough power is provided to charge the battery inside the Nest Thermostat. Nest suggests calling in a heating/cooling technician to change some of the wiring coming from the heating system to the Nest. Or a more economical fix is discussed where you would install (DIY) an external transformer. This transformer meets the requirements of the Nest. So, I'm pretty excited. I loved the Nest when it worked but I had to take it down. This transformer may give me a second chance. This was a pretty inexpensive transformer. I still have a little more research to do but I have this in hand so I can see its specifications. There are many online resources that talk about this issue and the use of external transformers.
