Description

Cultivated in East Kentucky and North Carolina for over 100 years, the two finger picking style has almost been forgotten. Few “old timer” players have mastered this style but fortunately some committed players like Art Rosenbaum and Mike Seeger have preserved this heritage and kept the style present. And now in three installments, Sebastian Schroeder will introduce you to this interesting style. The first book “2-Finger-Picking Index Lead Style” focuses on the index finger being the lead. The index finger is used to pluck the essential melody notes with the fifth string drone is played by the thumb. This technique can be easily used for all songs and you can almost play all Clawhammer tablatures using this style. This book includes 43 pages for banjo beginners and advanced players, 42 downloadable audio examples and tablature for all exercises and songs. • Excellent Instruction (Part 2)
Format: Kindle
This is a reprint of what I wrote about the Mixed lead kindle book I purchased but, I purchased this one first, but everything that is true about that book is true about this one: This my second 2 Finger banjo book by Sebastian Schroeder in the last month....I also got the Index lead book. These book are the best music instruction books that Ive used. The tablature is great, organized in steps....that get more musical as you progress....then put into the first whole song...then the first whole song with different time signatures. As for the rest of the songs, excellent arrangments that can played alone, and sound good at the slow and fast speed. I am 65....I consider myself a semi novice....I'll never be able to play lighting fast, this method is simple, perfect for me, these two books are a big help. ... show more

  • Excellent Introduction to Two-Finger Style
Format: Paperback
An excellent introduction to both the two-finger "old-time" style (if you're a veteran Scrugg-style player) and an excellent introduction to the banjo itself if you're a beginner. The arrangements are easy to learn and downright enjoyable to listen to...

  • Well worth it
Format: Paperback
This book is an undiscovered gem of a piece. I am a three finger player of two years. This book would suit anyone who has a few months experience in 2 or 3 finger style. It is particularly good at teaching "pull offs" and "hammer on's". I started with the "Index lead" book first but also bought the "Thumb lead" one. The index lead is helping me volumes in three finger playing as well by better sounding out the melody. I am a believer in learning three and two finger styles then mixing or not when appropriate. I am happy with this one. ... show more

  • Solid offering
Format: Paperback
Both of Sebastian's books are great. They do a good job of breaking down the picking approach and give some arrangements to popular old time songs. I only wish the audio was longer, and returned to the A section of tunes so that one could practice the transition from B to A alongside the audio.

  • Excellent introduction to 2 finger technique.
Format: Paperback
Great for beginners and clawhammer players who want to broaden their old-time abilities to include "up-picking". While this is not a series on bluegrass banjo, I recommend it as an initial step for the serious bluegrass aspirant. Rolls and the importance of playing melody will make a lot more sense from this perspective, although it will take an extra month or two to get to Rocky Top and Foggy Mountain. ... show more

  • Very clearly illustrated and explained method for 5-string banjo!
Format: Paperback
This is a refreshing approach to learning and enjoying the sound of your 5 string banjo. Some times, banjo instruction manuals can be too complicated for a beginning player and instead of enjoying the unique and beautiful sound of your instrument, you can get discouraged but this kind of method presented..2 Finger Banjo: Index Lead Style can instead be an encouragement to you. ... show more

  • A Good Introduction
Format: Kindle
When I decided to pick up a banjo, my first attempt was the clawhammer style. Some people are good at it but it seemed limited to me and it was difficult to work a melody into the rhythmic patterns. My next stop was this book and 2 finger instructional videos. I found it a much more flexible style, either index or thumb lead. I've always played finger picking style on a guitar so it was more natural. Once you've got the basics it's easy to extend the style and mix and match with Dock Bogg's style three finger and other variations. The book offers an alternative to the clawhammer or bluegrass routes that seem to be the main styles today. ... show more
