  • Amazing colors!
Color: Gold+silver+copper
The pictures of these filaments look good, and they look equally good on the spools in person. But none of that does justice to how these look when printed. The board game replacement coins I’ve made all look simply magnificent. Printing has gone pretty well - the gold maybe has an ever so slightly higher propensity for stringing and all adhere almost too well to my glass bed - and the same settings I use on my Ender 3 for Hatchbox PLA give me excellent detail so far. I will say that this is the only filament multi-pack from Mika3D that seems to make sense. Gold, silver, and copper (or bronze) all have related uses...I’d be more willing to try other colors if they were broken out into individual spools. All in all, quality filament at a reasonable price - I don’t know when I will need to order more but I definitely would do so whenever that need arises. ... show more

  • Amazing shine once you get the settings right. Updated.
Color: Gold+silver+copper
2nd Update: I'm deleting my first update. The extrusion issue was not the fault of the filament after all. My first review stands, although I will knock off a star for one reason. This filament is super brittle. It normally isn't a big deal, but when you get down to the last 20% of the spool where it is wound tightly, depending on what kind of a printer you have and how the filament feeds, you may encounter a big problem. For the Ender 3, you need around 2 inches of fairly straight filament to get it to feed properly. I had this filament snap on me at least a dozen times as I was trying to gently straighten out a piece by hand. I have never dealt with filament this brittle before. I almost gave up but managed to get it fed. You do pay a slight premium for this filament, but it isn't your normal dull everyday filament so I don't get all wound up about that. It is a bit more temperamental than standard filament and requires some adjustments from normal PLA settings, at least that has been my experience. Mine is printing about 98% perfectly with the temperature at 220C (bed temp of 60C is working just fine). I'm thinking about actually trying a different print with that run up to 225C or 230C because I get the very rare (like one pass in 100 at most) where the layer width for the one strand doesn't lay down quite as flat and uniform as the rest. Could be an issue with filament consistency, or it could just be that this wants to be a little warmer and I'm running it right at the bottom end. Now on to the great stuff. This material is REALLY shiny. It looks fantastic! I've printed short flat things and tall skinny things and it is interesting how the finish is so different, yet still cool for both. I printed a fairly large coin (2" diameter) flat on my Ender 3 and the result was stunning. The golden shine is really bright. You would never get anything this cool from regular filament. Then I printed the same coin on its end. It was a markedly different type of shine. It was a darker golden color and not quite as shiny but it still had this really cool look to it. They ship these in vacuum sealed zip lock bags, always a nice touch and I wish everyone did this. Overall I really love this stuff and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. I'm going to play a little bit more with the settings and see if I can get it dialed in to perfection, but I am happy with the results I am getting already. If I find better settings I'll update this review if I can. ... show more

  • I love this stuff...
Color: Gold+silver+copper
Having just bought a roll of "silk" PLA from another vendor, and had it turn out to be a complete disaster (kinks, uneven filament size, jamming, etc.), I was worried that I was going to be disappointed again. I shouldn't have been. The Mika3D filament is terrific. Prints are shiny and glossy, with a real metallic look (I got the gold/silver/copper bundle). The only profile change I had to make (Ender 3 Pro) was to bump up from my usual PLA hot-end temp of 205C to 215C. And with that one change (after a small test print using a wire clip that prints in 11 minutes), I've had nothing but great prints from both the silver and gold (haven't tried the copper yet!). And the included glue stick was a nice little bonus that I've actually used, having changed my Ender 3 Pro bed to a glass bed only recently. The filament is smooth, has a good constant diameter, feeds well, adheres well, layers well, and looks great for things you want to look metallic. No stringing or glopping of any kind. I think I've found my go-to metallic silk filament! ... show more

  • Probably not worth the effort needed for a casual 3D printing user
Color: Gold+silver+copper
I wanted to like this PLA (the Gold / Silver / Copper pack). It seemed to be the ideal choice for what I needed. Unfortunately, it just required more effort to get a good result than I was willing to put in. Visually, the filament looks great, and when I persuaded it to print successfully I was satisfied with the result. The challenge came with getting that successful print. I'm not sure if it's due to limitations with my printer (an Ender 3), my environment (Florida, albeit in an air conditioned room), or the PLA itself but I was getting a > 50% print failure rate with this when my normal failure rate with most other filaments I've tried is < 10%. It was particularly frustrating that each of the colors needed the print settings tuned individually to get an acceptable print of the same object. The most common challenges I had were as follows: * Adhesion issues. This was by far the most frequent. While the filament sticks to itself well, it often failed to stick to the printing bed. It was inconsistent though. After tuning the temperature to a value that worked well for me (205 or 210 depending on color, not the 220 stated on the spool itself), it varied between failing to stick, and sticking so tightly that the piece broke when being removed from the build plate. Printing a raft helped... except when it didn't. * Stringing. At the stated temperature of 220, there was a huge amount of stringing. This was significantly improved by using a lower temperature but still occurs as low as 200. * Snagging. Several failed prints were the result of what appeared to be situations where the filament got caught under itself on the reel. I have no idea how that happens, especially not when it occurs part way through the reel. When it did so, the strain was sufficient to break the filament. * Clogging. In a half roll of filament, the print nozzle got clogged three times. I did wonder if that was a problem with the extruder nozzle, but was able to print without issues using other (Hatchbox) filament. Hopefully this was just an issue with the specific batch(es) that were in my shipment. Overall I found that the challenges working with this were sufficient that I probably won't try using this filament again unless no other options are available. ... show more

  • Great quality filament.
Color: Gold+silver+copper+bronze
Beautiful set of metallic like filament. I bought it mainly for the copper/orange color but loce the others as well. The "bronze" looks more green than bronze but they all work very well using PLA silk settings on your printer. Everything was nice and smooth with no issues of stringing or tangles while printing. ... show more
