  • Good for low detail prints but too brittle for high detail
Color: 12 Spools - White+black+red+sapphire Blu...
I purchased both the assorted packages for both "bright shine" and "silky shine metallic gold", so this review reflects my experience with both types of Mika3D PLA filament. UPDATE: I have continued to struggle with this filament under-extruding/jamming, particularly when printing finer detail with a 0.25mm nozzle. Fortunately, I just found a setting in PrusaSlicer that seems to have solved this problem by limiting the maximum flow/pressure. By setting the "Max volumetric speed" I'm able to keep the extruder from attempting to push too much filament through too quickly and avoid this brittle filament breaking off in hobbed bolt grooves and eventually slipping. Prusa suggests a default value of Layer Height × Extrusion Width × Speed. My Prusa Mini with Bondtech extruder upgrade and 0.25mm nozzle is currently printing with a max volumetric speed of 0.75mm³/s and no sign of under-extrusion. This is conservative and I plan on testing higher flow rates since it nearly doubled my print time but, if the other option is wasting time being frustrated by failed prints and extrusion issue or throwing away the 20+ different rolls of Mika3D filament I've purchased, I consider this a win. --- ORIGINAL REVIEW: Once I got my settings dialed in for good print bed adhesion (configuration below), I was quite pleased with this filament for larger low-detail items such as toys and brackets. The primary difficulty I've found with this filament is that it's too brittle for the extruder gears to move back and forth repeatedly for detailed work. Any time I've tried to print at 0.10mm or less. The first several layers print beautifully in fine detail (0.05-0.10mm) but, as the extruder gears move the filament back and forth, the sides break off and collect in the extruder gear teeth. This results in less traction and more friction on the same spot. Eventually the filament stops extruding and, when I unload it, you can see where sides are ground down to a narrow point where the gears no longer had enough traction.. It's worth noting that the temperature tower I printed (see photo) showed consistently good quality between 190C and 215C with significant stringing starting around 220C. Original Prusa i3 MK3S (PC bed) Recommended Settings: Layer Height: 0.15mm or higher Extruder Temp (first layer): 230C Extruder Temp (other): 215C Bed Temp (first layer): 80C Bed Temp (other): 70C ... show more

Yes, I've purchased ALL OF THEM. So that should tell you that I like the Mika 3D brand, and I do! The "shiny silk" colors are unique and gorgeous, and I'm proud to own them all. Heck, I even have them on display in my printing closet! The filaments don't jam and make smooth, beautiful prints that I love the look of. With that said, let's make sure you know your use case. "Shiny" colors work best on prints where the filament layers are working together and all oriented in the same direction--like statues and vases. For "busy" prints where the filaments have to be laid down at cross purposes to one another, matte colors are best because a shiny filament will reflect light every which way and can look garish or distracting. I've attached a video to demonstrate the difference between shiny and matter. (The matte white on the left is TIANSE and the shiny white on the right is Mika's Pearl White.) A note on color: There are two pinks in these bundles, but they are different. The pink in the champagne-pink-white set is a more traditional baby pink, while the rose gold in the pink-brown-black set has golden-brown undertones. Both are gorgeous and worth buying. In closing, I love this filament and will be buying it again; I'm about to make Mika my single source for filament purchases. The only thing I do not like is the vendor begs you repeatedly for reviews as soon as you hit the buy button. Give me a few weeks to whip up some prints, Mika! Chill out. ~ Ana Mardoll ---------- IMAGES: - Matte Vs Shiny video is on the Mika Pearl White. - Numbered markers are TIANSE matte white (left) and Mika Pearl White (right). - Lava platform is Mika Black Gold. - Status rings are Mika Gold ("frightened"), Emerald Green ("poisoned"), Pearl White ("blessed"), and Champagne Gold ("deafened"). ... show more

  • Two out of three colors wouldn't adhere to bed
The filament I normally use was out of stock so I decided to try this filament for my Flashforge Adventurer 3 printer, primarily because of the smaller spool size which the printer uses. This is my third 3d printer, so I have a great deal of experience with 3d printing. The good news was that the spool did fit inside the printer. The first spool that I tried was black, and while it wasn't quite as good as the Flashforge filament, it printed without any changes to the printer. At this point I was happy that I'd found an alternative to the more expensive filament. My opinion changed when I switched to the white roll. I switched mid-print, and immediately started having problems. The new white layers pulled the black layers off the bed, ruining that print. Little did I know that was the last print I would get out of these rolls. No matter what I tried, I could not get the white layer to adhere to the bed. I don't know what the deal is with this filament, but it's almost like it shrinks significantly when it cools down from the nozzle temperature. Before the printer could complete a square around the perimeter of the bed, the original side had pulled off the bed. This happened again and again, on a bed that I normally can only get a print to release from by flexing the removable bed. Finally I gave up on the white and tried the red. If anything, the red was worse than the white. The printhead wouldn't get an inch away from the filament, and the filament would already have pulled off the bed. I tried everything: cleaning the bed, using a glue stick, using painter's tape, changing the temperatures for the bed and nozzle... nothing worked. Luckily my normal vendor restocked and first first print with the Flashforge filament was just fine, so the problem isn't the printer or my process. I don't know what the deal is with this filament, but if you read the comments I'm not alone in having bed adhesion issues. Clearly it isn't every color or every roll, because for me the black adhered just fine. But I paid $40 for half a kilo of good filament which is more than twice what I pay for a half kilo of the printer vendor's filament which is already high priced. I'd advise staying away from this filament, it isn't worth the hassle. Maybe if you could buy three rolls of the same color I'd consider it, but since the different colors have such different properties I'd stay far away from this stuff. ... show more
