I love this thing, i dont know how it compares to disposable hand warmers on cost but I'd say it uses about 2 zippo lighter refills worth of fuel (maybe less) per use. It frequently lasts 8-9 hours when full (factors like air exposure and how much it stays choked in the included felt pouch probably extend the active time) and underfilling it slightly got me 6 hours on the dot. I dont know if this product needs ONLY liquid lighter fuel, but if its anything like zippo lighters it should work with most flammable liquids (that have flammable vapors) i like that factor in case of emergency. It gets very hot, and will keep your hands /fingers warm in the pouch, and hot if you take it out, really helps me keep feeling my fingertips in freezing temperatures. It seems like the catalyst is a platinum based wool that is called platinum brights or platinum ember brights. I've dropped it and the catalyst is a bit sensitive, the impact ripped a small hole in the catalyst but it hasnt affected the use. Just be careful if you ever need to adjust the catalyst pad, it wants to fall apart at the slightest interference. All that said, i love this product, its great for working outside in 30 degree weather!

Call me old school, but I love devices such as these. I've always enjoyed Zippo lighters and products, even though I have long since quit smoking. This hand warmer is absolutely fantastic! It comes with a filling cup that really helps with keeping things clean and the smell of lighter fluid off of you. I used really, really old Zippo lighter fluid that I had lying around my camping gear. Filled up easily and lit without so much as a hiccup. I'm plenty warm in bed but still find myself filling the warmer up at night and putting it on a sore spot on my body. I can't wait to use it at an outdoor or social event. The pouch really helps regulate the heat and keep all of the pieces together. I actually lost it the second day I had it, but found it in a coat pocket and was overjoyed to have my little device back! I don't know why it makes me so happy but it does :D

Why didn't I buy one of these years ago?

I bought the 6-hour version for the smaller form factor and the pearl white finish. It's a really nice device to hold! All that being said, I'm confused by the other complaints in the reviews here. First of all, after receiving the product, I checked out a video on how to use this device. After filling, and lighting it, I would say it took me less than 8 minutes to get this thing up and running properly. Since then it has worked perfectly through at least a dozen refills, and I couldn't be happier with the device - It functions as intended, is well made, and is a lot safer than I had previously anticipated. The black material on my catalytic burner doesn't sit as high or fluffy as the others I've seen, and yet it still seems to function exactly as intended. After the first 2 uses it only seemed to get better as the device broke in, and the only piece of advice I can give is that you may want to overlight the burner the first couple times you use it, since it seems to be a little bit stubborn about lighting at first. After that it's super easy and compliant. Overall I can't find much bad to say about this device other than the steep price of replacement catalytic burners. Of course, I think at the point where I need a new burner, I'll likely just buy another handwarmer entirely. These things are amazing for arthritis, by the way! Really makes my hands feel nice, and I find myself even using it inside while watching television. I already put in my order for a 12-hour version. I didn't expect to like it this much. My only complaint is that it doesn't get warm enough while inside the protective baggie, but I don't personally have any qualms with removing it while in use.

Worth it to keep my hands toasty? brrr-duh!

I was researching hand warmers, as I was planning on going on higher elevation camping and wanted to warm my hands AND my isobutane cartridge. Being a beginner and on the west coast, I was only familiar with electronic hand warmers (needs electric source), sodium acetate activated hand warmers (lasts 20-30 minutes and need to reactivate them by boiling), disposable air activated (iron) hand warmers (never get warm enough but last up to 70% of claimed time), charcoal (inexpensive, but didn't want to deal with larger size). I stumbled upon catalytic lighter fluid based hand warmers and my eyes were opened! Thank you Japan! I purchased the Zippo 6 hour hand warmer in chrome. My version is stamped "D" "15", so Month is April and year is 2015. Happy 2nd birthday Handy Warmy! That's my hand warmers' name. I've only used it 3 time since purchase, but I've gotten 5-6 hours on each fill. Since I purchased a new bottle of Ronosol lighter fluid, I decided to pull out my Brass colored Zippo from my college days (stamped "G" "04", July of 2004). And am able to start the catalytic action with Handy Warmy. Only things consumable on the hand warmer are the catalytic burner unit and lighter fluid. Does not produce smoke, as it's not "burning" anything, but we do get that formaldehyde goodness. Won't be using this in enclosed spaces like my tent! If you have a sensitive nose, or work in an office, even though it's marked as "odorless", you can smell the lighter fluid if you try hard enough. They get friggin' hot if you try to handle the case without the pouch, the pouch does dissipate the heat, so I either have to hold tight to get some warmth. But it definitely works better than the iron hand warmers I am used to. (looking into other pouches to see if I can get a material that allows a bit more heat to reach my hands). These things reach up to 100+ (38 C) degrees, toasty. I keep the pouch cinched open enough that the Zippo doesn't tumble out, plus this allows the hand warmer to heat up. It is o2 activated. From reviews I've seen, looks like I have the new burner unit. doesn't seem to pack as much catalyst. Not sure if it will last the rated 70 starts these can go for, but for $9 (retail $20), and for my use, it's worth it. New burners replacements are $7-9 (ouch!). May look up Mountain Parameters for more info. I've dropped this twice while in pouch, and the burner unit has come off, but these are meant to be in your pocket, and I was playing around with the unit, my fault! The burner unit does not clip in, but fits tight enough to stay in place on body of the hand warmer. All in all, for outdoor use, I think it's a great hand warmer.

A game-changer - will keep your hands warm in the stands!

My hands get cold in the winter. This lets me do something about it, whether I'm going to be indoors or out. It's reasonably priced, dependable, and cheap to use. The Zippo 6-Hour Hand Warmer in Chrome is a great solution to cold hands. I keep a pair of them at work, a pair at home, and a pair in my car. Any time I get a chill, I fuel up one or two, and quickly get some convenient heat. This uses the same burner as the 12-hour warmer, so you'd think it would get the same temperature. But the 6-hour definitely feels warmer. Maybe because it's smaller and has less steel to heat, maybe because I can enclose this smaller heater in my hand and allow almost no heat to radiate directly to the cold air, not sure. But I don't even use my 12-hour heaters any more, just the 6-hours. I have generally found them dependable, but I had an issue with one of the six I purchased. I used the measure to put in the right amount of fuel, but I suspect the wick didn't go down all the way into the reservoir or something, because it'd stop working after only 2-3 hours and subsequent fuels wouldn't accept a full measure of fuel. But Amazon let me exchange it no problems, so I can't take off points there. Here are a few hints for getting along with this handwarmer. * Follow the filling and lighting directions precisely; wait 2 minutes after fueling and reassembling, and don't turn it upside down during that time. * Try using a butane torch lighter (like a Xikar Allume single-jet) to light the hand warmer instead of a 'soft flame' lighter like a Bic or Zippo. You can aim the torch down instead of inverting the hand warmer, and it puts intense heat exactly where you need it. * Try putting this small hand warmer right inside your gloves. You don't need special gloves, just use a large pair. Works best for me if I put the hand warmer in the palm. * Don't try to douse the fire, always let the fuel burn out. * This can get enough oxygen to work in a jacket pocket that's under a motorcycle jacket. Don't assume it needs to be in the open air. * Give it more air for more heat, less air to stretch the fuel out. * The chrome gets hot, so be careful about touching it directly when it's burning. The included cloth bag keeps your fingers safe.

Pretty Good Except For One LARGE issue

This is a long review, but sadly there is much to say. I ordered mine and received a model from 2015 which is okay. The hand warmer will produce a ton of heat when it is sitting on a table. I know this because I left mine on the table running, and when I picked it up, it was shockingly hot, to the point it was almost painful. But in use, its heat output is underwhelming, I took a walk when it was 33 degrees out and I found my self clasping the hand warmer so tightly that it actually ended up smothering the reaction. The bag is almost useless (except for 1 thing which I will get to later), it basically robs all the heat and I usually forego it. Starting the reaction is hard with a normal zippo lighter, or a standard bic lighter; this is definitely something better suited for a butane lighter that has a flame that is direct and is not affected by a draft. To light mine I hold my lighter up to the catalyst for 15 seconds or more depending on the conditions; sometimes it takes me a few tries because the flame from the lighter will heat the hand warmer up, making me think it is lit when it is not. Filling it is pretty easy, I only wish the little pour bottle they provided had more markings than for just 6 hours. Now for the large glaring issue, that stupid cap. There are 3 main components to this hand warmer, the grate that has 9 holes in it (top), the fuel compartment which makes up the bottom of the hand warmer, and the catalyst that is protected by the grate. All these things are held together by friction fit. All of these parts will separate if the slightest force is put upon them. The catalyst will separate way too easily, which is especially bad considering it is the only thing between your pocket and the lighter fluid that is contained in the fuel reservoir. But this loose fit between the catalyst and fuel reservoir starts to seem iron clad when compared to the fit between the top and bottom sections of the hand warmer. The slightest bit of pressure put on this bond, and the top grate section will separate from the bottom exposing the burning catalyst. This is not only very annoying, but its probably a bit unsafe. The amount of force required to overcome this friction fit is barely more than the weight of the hand warmer itself. I accidentally dropped this hand warmer from a small height and every part of it separated (I wasn't using the bag). I am fine if zippo uses friction fit to hold the parts of their hand warmers together, but I expect the amount of friction holding this hand warmer together to be more than I would get in house slippers on an icy and inclined driveway. I removed 2 stars for things relating to this issue, one for the issue itself, and another for zippos lazy and counter productive fix of providing a carry bag that they probably hoped wouldn't block too much heat (which it does) and would hold the hand warmer together (which it does but at the expense of practicality and usability). **Corrections** First in my original review I made it sound like liquid fuel would come spilling out if the catalyst came off, that is only true if you over fill the hand warmer. If you use it as described, there is a cotton lining that soaks up the fuel like a sponge. If you over saturated (by overfilling the hand warmer) the cotton lining then absorbed fuel could come out if the catalyst came off, but that would be partially your fault for overfilling it in that case. Secondly, I said that I had gone on a walk and the warmer struggled to keep my hands warm. That is true, but only because I didn't fill it with enough fuel to get the hand warmer at peak performance. If I had filled it up all the way, it would of done a better job. I am still not going to give back a star because simple design changes could prevent large issues.
