After 15 years, my memory foam mattress and its box spring were more than at the end of their lives and needed to be replaced. Buying a mattress is a very personal and expensive decision and with so many mattresses on the market of which most you can't see or tryout physically because they are sold exclusively online, it is very difficult to determine which one is right for you -- and if you have a sleeping partner, it makes it even more difficult to find one that will work for both. My husband has had both a hip replacement and lower back fusion surgeries and needless to say he is very suspicious of the mattress-in-a-box concept and was skeptical of all of the best options I found online. To complicate matters, his back situation makes it difficult for him to go to a local mattress store to try out options there, so it took us FOREVER to come to an agreement about what mattress to buy and where. I gave up after a month of off-and-on searching but then it happened -- a particularly sleepless night on our old mattress with extreme back pain in the morning. That was the final straw. That nite forced us to get it in gear and make a final decision. We decided to try Zinus for three reasons: 1) the reviews online overall were great; 2) the company sold a sturdy platform foundation we could purchase separately so no box spring was needed; and, 3) the price for the mattress was incredibly reasonable for the options and features included. I have to say that we were still pretty skeptical about ordering a mattress online but figured if it turned out to be a big disappointment, we weren't out that much cash (and neither of us could fathom how we'd ever get a big queen-sized mattress back into a small box for a return!) Our Zinus hybrid mattress took about a week to get here, but came as advertised. I will say that the outer box was really beat up and broken, but no damage to the packaging around the mattress itself, thank goodness! I set up the SmartBase foundation unit myself (really easy and fast) and managed to get the mattress onto the base with a little maneuvering (it was pretty heavy - you should have seen me struggling to get it up the stairs to the bedroom!) I unpacked it according to the directions and almost immediately it opened up to the 14" height. Since the initial "roll out" I have not seen/felt any dips or collapsed spots as another reviewer experienced. All of this is very good and well but the real test is the sleep test. I NEVER look forward to having a new mattress because it always takes me at least a week of sleepless nights to break in one. In fact, I had readied the guest bedroom in anticipation of having to transfer over in case I found myself tossing and turning a night or two while getting use to the new Zinus. You know all of those reviews you've read about people claiming to wake up from the best sleep they've ever had or with no back pain whatsoever? Well, that has never been my experience, at least not for the first week of the breaking-in stage. Until now. Wow. This bed is fantastic! I am a back sleeper generally. This mattress provides complete support of my lower back as well as all other areas. No transfer of motion, no squeaks, and very easy to change positions, unlike some memory foam mattresses where you sink in and good luck getting out of the indentation you've made. The first night and every night has been a sound sleep experience for me. And yes, for the first time in forever, I get up and out with no back pain. (Thought I would never say that!) My husband with all of his back issues has said that his sleep has improved and while he will likely never be pain free in the morning, this mattress has drastically improved his sleep experience. I was concerned about some of the reviews stating that this particular Zinus mattress model we had ordered was too firm. However, I'm finding it to be just the right amount of support and comfort. I will update my review if I'm finding that the mattress is not performing as expected, but so far I am satisfied completely with my purchase. This experience has not taken the anxiety out of purchasing a mattress online for me totally, but I feel fortunate this purchase worked out well.

I've only slept on this mattress for two nights and I'm already in love with it. I have bad lower back pain from arthritis and degenerative disc disease so I need a fairly firm mattress to support my back. I originally purchased a Saatva mattress (for $1900!) but found it to feel a bit lumpy and it began to sink in the middle after only a few months. My sister has had this mattress for 2.5 years and still loves it so I figured I'd give it a shot. At first I was worried that it would be too soft, as the foam feels very cushy to my hand. As soon as I laid on it I knew I was wrong - it's firm enough to support my back but the foam is comfortable to sleep on. I don't get any pressure on my hips or shoulders when I lay down, but I also don't sink into the mattress. I woke up after the first night with barely any back pain, it felt like a miracle. I do recommend making sure you get the right support for the mattress - I added the Zinus slats on top of my box spring to be sure the foam hybrid is properly supported. I only kept the box spring to keep my mattress from being too low. Having said that, the mattress is THICK and I kind of struggle to get up on the bed with my full-sized box spring! If you want some height above your bedframe, you'd really only need to get one of those modern more thin box springs to add a few inches. A really solid surface for the mattress is the most important thing so the foam doesn't sag. I know some people have referenced the smell of a foam mattress - I opened the mattress and let it lay flat (without the plastic) for 2 days before I slept on it so that it could fully inflate and any odor could dissipate. I haven't noticed any smell since sleeping on it. I'll try to remember to update in a few months, but so far I am in love with this mattress and strongly recommend it, especially for anyone struggling with back pain. You can't beat the price and the quality.

We had high hopes for this Zinus mattress. Let me start by sharing we have purchased both frames and mattresses before (all from Amazon) and love the Zinus brand. The frames are durable and mattresses comfortable, so when my husband and I decided to replace our king mattress, I plowed through reviews for just about every mattress using "firm" in my search. This one is listed as medium-firm and the price reasonable, so we decided to take a chance. So hard to purchase without trying out, but it seems the "bed in a bag" is the way of the future. With Amazon Prime, I took the gamble. The 2 fabulous Amazon delivery folks had a great sense of humor...I called this the "marriage wrecker," as they delivered to our home & brought up to the second floor. They opened the plastic, and the mattress did its thing...expanding right away. It does have handles on the outside of the mattress to help adjust on the bed or moving after it is expanded. I left for work, allowing it to complete its expansion. Upon return, decided to give it a try. When lying on it, it feels soft & cool, even with bedding on it. No odor from being sealed. We purchased the 14-inch, and it is every bit of 14 inches fully expanded. The dog loved it, my son loved it, but for us (overweight, old backs), it is too soft. We gave it a second night thinking maybe with more time to expand, it would become firmer. Unfortunately, it is just too soft. I even found myself searching for something we could place on top but quickly realized, though high quality, we should return it. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime for making this an easy transaction. We are keeping the Zinus frame, donating the mattress, and the search continues for an âextra firmâ mattress. Hesitant to take away "stars" because the mattress is well made and the overall experience a success, but just not going to work for us.

1st thing, donât read ALOT of the reviews on this mattress, or any of the others, as far as that goes.. Because they are JUST PEOPLES PERSONAL OPINION...and EVERYONE is DIFFERENT...itâs ok to read a few, and I highly recommend you do, but reading too many will confuse you, because NO mattress is perfect...you just have to find the one that is âperfect for YOUâ...There isnât a mattress out there for sale that 2 people love, but 4 others hate and donât want to recommend...For instance, take example 1: a bunch of âreviewersâ had said âthere was a strong smellâ from the mattress upon âopening it upâ for the 1st time, and some even said it lingered for awhile...Well, I unpacked mine thinking âI wonât mind a little newness smellâ but guess what? NO SMELL AT ALL..! Then, I read how âheavyâ it was, and that it would take 2 people to handle and set it up...Well, these were obviously women, because I am a small male, 5â6 tall, and am 50 years old with arthritis, and I didnât have any problem handling and setting it up..Just make sure you put the box in the same room your frame/pedestal is...because once it âopens upâ forget about moving it anywhere else on your own..so, did I get lucky with this one? I think not...I think people just like to look (and find) things wrong, when they know theyâre going to write a review...They already have these ânegativeâ reviews that they have read about, in theyâre minds...I got the 14 inch Queen Gel infused ZINUS HYBRID, because: A. Enough people said good things about it, and: B. Itâs inexpensive price (Especially compared to most of the other mattresses..) It took me a few weeks to REALLY get used to it and form an opinion, SO GIVE IT A CHANCE! (I had never slept on a hybrid, which has i-coils on the bottom half, and several layers of memory foam on top) You WILL âsink inâ a little, that is DEF. what happens with memory foam, but thanks to the bottom âi-coilsâ you get the best of both worlds, comfort AND support, because the coils keep you from âsinking too farâ into the mattress, and not being able to get up or move around easily...Itâs pretty firm actually, but forget the nonsense about needing something âreally softâ if your a âside sleeperâ...I myself sleep on my side, and this mattress is EXCELLENT for sleeping on your side OR on your back..! (I donât know about âsleeping on your stomachâ face down, that is just WAY TOO UNCOMFORTABLE for me on ANY bed) Also, I am warm blooded by nature, and get pretty warm at nite as I sleep, but this mattress is âgel infusedâ and actually does what it says: you get a nice cool, niteâs rest with âno additional heatâ from this mattress..And I wake up well rested with alot fewer aches and pains that I used to have upon waking up in the past, what with being 50 years old and having arthritis... Ok, time to wrap it up...I REALLY like it, and I highly recommend it, especially if you want to save a few bucks, and donât want âjust a memory foam onlyâ mattress.. If I have problems in the future I will amend this review. This company offers rather nice products at low prices, and other companies should use them as a model for installation instructions, those are superb. I bought a much more expensive Saatva Queen size mattress the prior year, and liked that but ended up putting a 2-inch/3-lb memory foam/gel topper on it to relieve pressure points. I don't blame the mattress for this need, I blame my 65 years on Planet Earth. I was very satisfied but needed a King size mattress, and bought this for about 1/4 the price. I had the Saatva on a Zinus 14-slat wooden frame, a great buy, but I was not confident about using one of those with a 150+ lb bed. I opted to use a Zinus metal frame, and also a Zinus 14-slat bunkie board platform to set on that. I put the bed up by myself without any problems. However I hope to never have to move it, not just because it is heavy, but also while I think this is a great deal, I doubt that it is as structurally strong as my Saatva is. I have seen the the coils on one of their other hybrids are not really individually wrapped, but rather rows of coils are wrapped with the fabric between coils glued together. If I am incorrect about this, I invite Zinus to correct me. But again, at 1/4 the price I expect some compromises, and one of those is that I think it wise to not overly stress the mattress as best as possible moving it and such. Now at two weeks I have to say it is really nice. Quite soft and comfortable . It looks great, it did expand to 14 inches. I put some felt pads on the bed frame feet and it slides nicely over my wood floor when cleaning the floor, even as heavy as it is. The Zinus bed frame says it can handle up to 2,000 lbs, it seems pretty strong, and the Zinus bunkie board platform that sets on the frame is very solid. I did end up getting a 2 inch gel/memory foam topper as I did with the Saatva, which I expected from the beginning was probable. I miss the softness of the Zinus mattress a bit, but still I found myself having to shift from back to side or other side several times to relieve pressure points. I don't blame the mattress for that. It really is a great combination of softness and firm support, I think many people would be very please with it as it is. Just for myself, I need that extra layer of memory foam. For me a hybrid mattress with a 2-inch 3-lb gel/memory foam topper works quite well.

Update: We have now had this bed for 19 days, we have had to unfortunately contact customer service concerning the mildew smell because it has gotten worse, we cannot keep our bedroom door closed because it fills the whole room, my husband who we bought this bed for because of a back injury has had multiple asthma attacks from the smell and now is back on the couch until we can find another mattress, I have no choice but to sleep on it and am rewarded with a wonderful heachache every morning. Customer service is a nightmare, we keep getting the automated response from our email with the directions for opening it and allowing it time to vent which we obviously did and that same automation comes back every time we respond. We should have known it was all wrong when the scheduled delivery that I took work off for was a whole day late to begin with. Today I'm taking more time off to call off and attempt to find some sort of resolution but I'm not hopeful, how in the world do you return a bed that came factory rolled under pressure? First review- Product is very soft and comfortable compared to what we had but it's been 7 days out of packaging and it smells sorta like mildew after a week of being package free..and we are from Washington state which means our state flower is mildew so it's a familiar smell..makes me nervous that it's never gonna go away. Second review After 28 days of automated email responses, a phone number that kept cycling back to the prompt when you pressed any number, and a husband sick of sleeping on the couch because the smell was triggering his asthma (smell did not fade at all, and can be smelled through our entire upstairs now), we contacted Amazon large item dept and on the line with them attempted another call to Zinus customer service and with met with the same cycling phone message. End result, Amazon took care of our issue and we donated the mattress.

I'm always doubtful with buying a new mattress without testing it first. But, took my chance with this one and glad I did. Delivery was fantastic. It came, men brought it into the room, opened it up, and took all the trash away. Bed started lifting up immediately. Within 8 hours the bed was fully inflated and at 14". Noticed a bit of a smell when the bag was first opened but, it didn't last and mattress didn't stink like it at all. I was worried I would have to put our topper on it if it was too hard. It wasn't hard at all! Was firm but not super firm. Soft but not super soft. Perfect. So, no topper on it at all. First night of sleep. My spouse is a back sleeper. Woke up the next morning with no hip pain at all. The same with the second and third night of sleeping. I am a side and stomach sleeper. No issues hip or back pain. No shoulder hurting when laying on it for long periods. In fact, I wake up, during the night, in the same position I fell asleep in and I'm not uncomfortable. The edge around the bed doesn't feel too supported. So it feels like the edge gives in too much. Just something different than our old mattress. I just know to boost myself up just a bit more and I'm fully supported. Because it's been a few days now, I don't even notice it. I do also have to note that this mattress is up on a box spring. So, it sits higher. A LOT higher. You can have this mattress on a nice supported base and not have any issues at all. Again, this is our choice and not everyones. The mattress is well worth the cost. And the cost really isn't that high compared to other brands out there. Even if this mattress only lasts 5-6 yrs, it's still well worth the cost when it's time to replace it. And when we do have to replace, I will look into another Zinus mattress. Waking up so sore and achy for about 2 yrs now, it is so nice waking up and not feeling that back and hip pains we used to feel. Also, the mattress is heavy! My spouse is a larger person. They would shift our old mattress when they'd be sliding into bed. This mattress doesn't move at all!

Like most, I did a ton of research before pulling the trigger on a bed-in-a-box. I took a chance on Zinus because of the drastically lower price and all of the positive reviews. Long story short, this mattress lives up to the hype. It's not too firm and not too soft. Loads of support with just enough "sink" to relieve pressure points. I studied the mattress finder tool on the Zinus website at length and chatted with a few Zinus reps before picking this 14" model. It seemed like the best of all worlds: the support of springs, the comfort of memory foam, and the softness of the 14" (thicker typically = softer). This model was recommended for side sleepers (my wife) and back sleepers (me). It's also the older version of Zinus's current flagship model that's only sold on Zinus.com, so it's a bit cheaper. This is actually our 2nd Zinus mattress. First, we ordered their "Extra Firm" model because my wife likes a firmer mattress and we suspected a bed-in-a-box would naturally be "squishier" than a traditional mattress. We were wrong. The Extra Firm model was super sturdy and had absolutely zero give. Seemed like a great quality mattress, but wasn't comfortable for me. Our last mattress was an all-memory-foam Tempurpedic that was 5x the price of Zinus, so we were really comparing apples to oranges. We ended up donating the Extra Firm to a local charity and then ordered this model. Both times, the mattress arrived in a completely shredded box, but the mattresses are wrapped in thick, sturdy plastic, so it wasn't a problem. The second one even sat out in the rain for a few hours before I got home and it was still fine. Both mattresses expanded quickly and had absolutely no odor. My wife is super sensitive to smells and even she couldn't smell a thing. There was no crazy "kick" to the mattress when unrolling it. We let ours sit out for a full 24hrs before sleeping on it. Both of ours were kings, so they're pretty heavy, but not impossible to move if you're an able-bodied adult. All in all, we couldn't be happier with this Zinus. It was so cheap it feels like we're cheating.
