Eighteen months ago due to severe spinal stenosis I gave up my once awesome but currently sagging 20 year old beauty rest mattress in favor of sleeping directly on my board like box springs with a mattress topper. For a while it helped but at 68 years old I finally realized I needed at least a little bit of cushion or give. After reviewing pretty much every mattress on the planet for the last six months I decided on an inexpensive bed in a box type of mattress. I didn't want to spend a lot in case it didn't work out. I have had coil spring mattresses for over 60 years so I decided to stick with that familiar feel. However, I definitely needed the firmest mattress I could find… a step above the wooden board I had been sleeping on. Last Monday, July 28th I ordered the Zinus performance plus extra firm 10 inch queen mattress. I received it three days later on Thursday shipped from Amazon. It came in a long box about 90 pounds. I maneuvered it from the porch on its end all the way to my bedroom. Not too bad for a 68 year old woman with a bad back! I set it on the bed and unpacked it with no problem. I slowly cut the wrapper off as instructed and the mattress immediately started inflating and expanding. The smell was very mild and reminded me of dried hay. 10 hours later when I went to bed the smell was completely gone. Before I made up the bed I laid on the mattress for a few minutes to test the firmness. It is very firm but with that tiny bit of give that you get from a spring mattress. Since the 10 inch style has very little padding on top of the springs I decided to use my 3 inch Novafirm gel memory foam topper from Costco. If I was a little younger and not so sore I probably wouldn't need it. I also have a very nice bamboo made in the USA mattress pad that I'm using on top of that. Now the results. These last four nights I feel like I died and went to heaven! I have not slept this well in over two years. I feel like I am sleeping in a $2000 bed! I am not waking up six or seven times a night and it is sooo comfortable. Can't tell you how grateful I am to have found this bed and at such a good price. I was so apprehensive about this purchase and am so relieved and happy about the results! I know this was a very long review but I wanted all of you out there to have enough information in one review to help you make a decision. Also you already know my age but I am 5 foot four and 168 pounds if that helps. Also if you buy the bed directly from Amazon it comes a bit faster. Amazon prime got it to me in 3 days but I had to pay $20 tax. If you order it from Amazon and pick vendor Sleep Revolution( which is like the store front of Zinus) to order it from it takes about 7 to14 days and you don't pay tax. But I wanted it really fast. I just want to end this review with a huge thank you to Zinus for making a product that has so vastly improved the quality of my life!!................... Today is April 21, 2021 and it has been about 3 1/2 years since I bought this wonderful mattress. A lot of times you will see a review for a product and then never hear from that consumer again. But I love this bed so much I felt I should offer a follow up. First of all this mattress is in exactly the same shape as when it was new. I can detect no wear of any kind or any sagging. I am now 72 years old and still have my back issues but I have never slept so well in any other bed that I have owned. I still can’t believe that I paid less than $250 for a “bed in a box” coil spring mattress of this quality. I own the 10 inch mattress and as I stated I at first used a 3 inch memory foam topper but I ended up getting rid of it because foam is just too hot for me. Besides the top of this bed is soft enough even though the mattress is super firm and I use a bamboo USA made plush mattress pad cover which is perfect. This combination allows the mattress to breathe and the whole sleeping experience is cool and comfortable rather than hot and suffocating. I think the problem with foam is your body heat does not dissipate very well and I am a very hot sleeper. So in closing I will just say this. This mattress is worth every penny. top tier product. SUPER FIRM. i needed to add a 2 inch topper but just what i needed.

Comes packed in a box and expands to full size for me in 5 minutes. Didn't take more than 5 minutes to be ready to sleep on. I was scared it might take half a day. no such issue. I had a car accident 20 years ago and my back is wrecked. This and an ergonomic way too expensive fancy desk chair fixed it. This mattress is crazy firm. Personally i had to buy a 2 inch foam topper after the first night because as a side sleeper it hurts your shoulder. Evne with the topper it's still firm but very comfortable and supporting. I'm the type of person that lays on a mattress and 3 to 5 minutes i can easily tell if it's gonna hurt my back because my back is super sensitive if it's not gettin g supported. i've had this matress for almost 1 year and it's still firm as hell and the only thing excacerbating my back is when i slouch in my office chair. Not a bad nights sleep. I'd buy again. For the price a very good choice by me. One thing i will say it's it's not quite 10 inches. It's more like 8.5 to 9 inches. The only reason why I’m writing this review is because I was searching for a firm mattress in stores and online within my price range for quite some time and the reviews really help me decide on this one even though some are negative. As you probably will find out, “firm” is debatable - so when I saw that this was extra firm (and the only one that said that online), it caught my eye. It’s been a month and I will say I’m very happy I went with this choice. This is why I’m giving it 5 stars: 1) it’s not extra firm but it’s firm. It’s not rock hard but with my bf being much heavier 180 versus my 118 lbs , it’s not sinking down on one side which happens with medium or plush beds - will it happen over a year? not sure but so far so good. 2) I also like the feeling of a traditional bed although if I found an extra firm memory foam option, I would have been fine with that. This bed feels like a traditional bed but you can’t feel or hear the springs (unlike one of the reviews). 3) other reviews did say the sides are not firm which is true - upon releasing it to expand, even after the 48 hours I was so worried that reviews on the sides would effect the firmness but it did not. Also I had a lot of fear while it was “expanding” because I was able to push my hand down in the middle and it appears like more like a medium firm bed but it is not, it’s firm and as the week went by, it got firmer. Is it extra firm? no. If you want that kind of firmness where you can’t crash on the bed and have it bounce, this is not it but trust me it’s firm even though when you press on the sides it does go down. Even though it’s been a month only, I’m happy with my purchase because the price is really good. If it goes bad, I’ll do an update but I purchased this based on reviews and it helped me. Ok, first I should say I've only just got this mattress (twin size), so this is just my initial impressions. This mattress is FIRM but the description says VERY FIRM, I suppose this is a subjective thing as my definition of FIRM and your definition of FIRM can differ widely. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being that cartoon of sinking in until you get completely enveloped and 10 being a sheet of plywood, I'd call this a 7. Slight give but will not "contour" to your body. For me, and I'm pushing almost 380lbs, I sink in maybe an inch. Which for me is nearly perfect. It came rolled in a box and I followed the directions for unrolling and let it set for 2 days before using it. I smelled no offensive odors, and it "aired" up fully. No sags or other issues. My only complaint is that there is absolutely NO side support. This is just a nit-picky complaint on my part and why I feel it was only worth dropping half a star. But this could be an issue for some. If I were to sit on the edge of the bed (any edge....top, bottom, or either side) the mattress smushes completely flat. A little weird when getting out of bed or trying to sit on the edge to put on my socks. Also, it would have been an issue to use this in my camper where the mattress would be surrounded on 3 sides by walls. Laying on the back edge against the wall I could easily see the edge collapsing and pining me between it and the wall. Again a VERY specific case in point but still worth mentioning. For my current usage it is perfectly fine and by the second time I got up from the bed I got used to it but I would feel better if it had a wire perimeter support to beef up the edges. I know why they dont do this as it would likely get bent out of shape when they roll and vacuum seal it for shipment so there is a trade off. And like I said it is a bit nit-picky but I figured I'd mention it in case someone needs a firm edge as well as a firm sleeping area. Perfect Firm Mattress

OMG, if you're looking for a firm mattress, this is the one. It doesn't smell at all, popped up immediately, and we laid on it in relief right away. I have multiple sclerosis and have been experiencing a high level of night time neuropathy. It got to the point that I wasn't sleeping. I finally realized we needed a new mattress right away. We'd previously had a 14inch soft mattress that was a dream turned nightmare. One day it just stopped holding it's shape. We bought a very fluffy mattress cover for this mattress and will be adding a 2inch pillow topper. We wanted to sleep on it for a night to determine what thickness of pillow topper we want. However, I slept like a dream and my husband's snoring STOPPED. I had no idea the soft mattress was causing him breathing issues. We didn't feel each other move through the night and this mattress is so sleep worthy that I accidentally fell BACK asleep while just laying in bed. That normally only happens when my illness is flared, but this happened for no reason...well, except the fact that I need to catch up on sleep. For reference, both my husband and I are over 5ft 10inch tall and weigh 300lbs each. Big folks. This mattress is amazing. I'll update this review in a few months. ... show more

Let me tell you about our mattress. It is amazing. I had it delivered to my business instead of home because nobody would be there to receive it the day it was to arrive and packages have come up missing recently. I had my wife come by and pick it up. She has a newer Ford F-350 crew cab dually turbo diesel that she pulls a vending trailer with and a very heavy lead foot to go with it. She had been to Home Depot to get the lumber for us to build a platform bed for the two queen mattress we ordered, making one large bed for us and our three labradors. Anyway, her tailgate was down because of the length of the 10 foot wood and I put this very heavy mattress on top of the wood, thinking it was heavy enough to not slide around or out, ignored her request for me to help her tie it all down properly, and told her to drive slowly, got in my car and followed her home. Well...she drove slowly until the part where we have an area where we have to pull off of a side road onto a two lane high speed highway and where we do so is right at the crest of a hill. She saw a chance to go and nailed it, obviously forgetting it was all back there. The mattress along with most of the wood slid out of the bed of her truck right onto the highway and a semi truck coming the other way ran right over the mattress, obliterating the box it was in, and sent the mattress rolling off the side of the road. Of course we both stopped as well as the driver, the truck driver yelled at her and I yelled my lungs out at her because I was so mad, forgetting she had asked me to tie it down and I had ignored her. She apologized to the driver but cussed me out with one finger and a word that begins with an F as well as something terrible about my mother or some word that began with that. We, I mean, I loaded it all back up and drove on home, back roads this time. I unrolled the mattress when I finally got it in the house, she was done with me at that point and in another part of the house, I could feel the glare, but anyway, I figured the mattress was trashed. It was not. Nothing was broken, it puffed right up, no weak spots, just a little dirt and road rash, that is it. Unbelievable. I slept on it that same night. I am glad we have another one coming to complete our bed and I can't say enough good about the durability of this mattress and how much better we both feel sleeping on it. The other one should be here this weekend and by the way, she is enjoying her flowers and chocolate. I also vacuumed and cleaned the kitchen. Thanks, Gary ... show more

Firm, Supportive, and Lifechanging. I'm Never Going Back to Full Foam!

I replaced my old memory foam mattress with this ZINUS 10 Inch Support Plus Pocket Spring Hybrid Mattress, and I honestly cannot believe the difference. It’s lifechanging. The firmness is perfect. I could absolutely sleep on it as is, but I chose to peel the two inch memory foam topper off my old mattress and use it on top for a plush finish. I truly do not understand why memory foam mattresses are still the default for so many people. They just don’t perform as well, especially if you are around 5’10” and 200 pounds like I am. I would slowly sink deeper and deeper into my old bed, and it never offered the support I needed. This mattress, though, delivers. After just one night of sleep, I woke up feeling amazing. I can also sit upright in bed and work without that slow compression that happens with foam over time. If you prefer a firm bed with real support, this is the one you should get. The price is fantastic, too. Just be sure you are getting this Support Plus model and not the newer box version. That one is a different construction and has medium support. Read reviews specific to the model before purchasing. As a bonus, inner spring mattresses like this one are also much more recyclable compared to all-foam mattresses, which almost always end up in the landfill. Another win. ... show more

Quality degraded quickly, had a lot of issues

Very firm mattress, but I experienced A LOT of issues with it. The bed developed a cavity within two weeks of use. I toughed it out for a month, then took a break, and tried it for another week to make sure I wasn't imagining things. 1) The pillow top sinks and is not supportive. I don't weigh a lot, so maybe I didn't sink past the supportive layer as I only weigh 120 lbs, but within a week there was a large indent where I typically sleep. 2) In addition to sinking, the pillow top contoured to my body in a weird way and gave me pressure points on my lower back and allowed my butt to sink. So I ended up with a severely arched spine. Again, maybe I'm the wrong size and weight for this bed as my weight is concentrated in one area. This would also get worse the longer I laid in bed because the foam on top would heat up and allow more sinking. 3) The final result was a sloped sinkhole where my butt was and I basically felt like I was sleeping in a firm hammock that was crushing me. 4) The design of this mattress is not particularly reactive, so I felt very heavy flopping around on this. If it stayed firm like the first 5 minutes you lay on the bed, I would've been very happy! I gave the mattress some fair and normal use. I used it the first time for a month and started developing back pain from the above issues. Swapped out my bed frame for a more supportive one for a few months, then tried this mattress again-- sleeping on the other side. And this time within a week I was in another sinkhole. I tried a couple other online mattresses and just ended up going to a mattress store to try them in person. I'm getting a Sealy Kenaston Firm and am very happy with as it has a "sleep on top" feeling. Most modern mattresses just feel like big sandpits.
