I’m in the process of installing an electric vehicle charger in my garage and had to bore a 1 1/4” hole in a 2x6 stud after trying to initially bore the hole with a 1” spade bit. When I couldn’t enlarge the 1” hole evenly to accommodate the size of the wiring, I decided to look for a step bit. I came across this step bit and decided to give it a try. This step bit solved my problem by enlarging my hole evenly-leaving me with the perfect size hole to accommodate the running of my wiring. There were only two small downsides of this step bit: one, the step bit is not a hex bit that you can just snap into your impact driver and use-it is designed to be screw tightened into you drill chuck; and two, the stem is somewhat short so I had to adjust it inside my drill’s chuck to make it longer to get completely through the stud. This worked but I was afraid the bit was going to slip out of the chuck and fall in the wall cavity. Great value for a full set. Quality seems high. I used the punch tool to mark the center. Had trouble getting started with these so I drilled a pilot hold using a metal drill bit (#10) and then moved into the graduated set. I needed a 3/4” hole so I started with the smallest bit, then moved to the second, skipped the third and finished with the largest. I’m sure you can do the whole thing with one but but it was nice to have a few to play around with. So far, 5 stars ... show more

Yes, this was a bargain tool so one cannot expect superior, long lasting, bullet-proof performance. However, the real key to these "bargain" or "value" tools is to not abuse them. Another important point is to keep the RPMs low when drilling into metal, don't use brute pressure and take your time. I recommend using cutting oil or some other lube as well as dipping the bit into water to keep it from over heating. I have used this step-bit many times over the past 3 years and so far so good. Again, yes, a Temo or Dewalt would be superior in performance and probably longevity however, at 3 times the cost. ... show more
