  • Blugill and Ultralights
Style: Size 20 Reel Pattern Name: Fishing Reel
This reel is by far the best spincast reel that I've ever used. Smooth casts, extreemly smooth retrieves, and a very solid build. The drag is located nicely. Easy to get to, but not easy to bump by mistake, and it adjusts nicely too. I've only had it out on one trip so far, but I think I'm going to enjoy it for a long, long time. I need to get a few more. Here's my story. Edit - I've had these reels for 4 years now, and they're still the best spincast reels I've ever had the pleasure to use. No mater how fast and hard I reel a fish in, the reel never loads the line up, and always casts perfectly smooth on the next cast. I mostly fish for bluegill, and some crappie. I've not had much of a problem finding reels that work well with a bobber and split shot. Sure some are junk, but over the last 25 years I've found a number of $20 reels that work quite well. However, I prefer to use artificial baits like beetle spins, or 1 1/2" grubs on a 1/32 oz jig head with or without a spinner. Finding a good reel that will cast a 1/32 oz jig head with a 1 1/2" grub has been a challenge, but I think my quest is finally over. I tried useing open face reels for a few years but I never got used to it so I went back to looking for a good spincast. I don't get to fish nearly as much as I used to, but was finaly able to get out with my 4yo daughter over the weekend. I had ordered a pair of these reels to replace some ageing Johnson Century 100B reels that I have on a couple of my 6' ultralights. I didn't get the reels ordered early enough, but they did arrive the afternoon before our little adventure. I have a few 5 1/2' rods that have some older reels on them, so I swapped one of those out for one of the Omega 2 reels. Once I got my daughter all set up in the morning, between unhooking her fish, putting a new worm on, and casting her pole back out, and watching her bobber for her, I put a jig head and small grub on the shorter rod with the Omega 2, and I put a small beetle spin on a 6' rod with a cheep Pfluger 4410CX reel and new 4lb mono. Between helping my daughter with her fish, I would swap between the two setups. I had intentionally set the new reel up with the more difficult combination. I could not cast quite as far with the Omega 2 setup, but that was to be expected given the shorter rod, heavier line, and lighter tackle, but I was surprised by just how far I could cast it. The retrieves blew me away! They were silky smooth. When I got a hit, it felt like I hit a ROCK! I could feel every bump along the way. Drag adjustments were in small increments and were very repeatable. I had no problems setting it up. At the end of the day, my daughter and I had put about 15 nice bluegill each in the basket, and she had a blast doing it (wich was the main goal for the day). After getting home, getting the fish cleaned, and everything put away, I pulled a cheaper, problematic reel off one of my 6' ultra light rods, and put the Omega 2 in its place. I can't wait to get it out and fish with it some more. Now I just need to get 3 or 4 more! ... show more

  • Very Nice
Style: Size 30 Reel Pattern Name: Fishing Reel
I purchased this reel a few years ago and decided to write a review. I had a Zebco 33 for about 20 years and loved it. It finally imploded reeling in a big pike. I went out and got a 33 Classic. What a horrible reel! Nothing like the original Made in USA Zebco. I threw it in the trash. So after looking around I decided to go for the Omega. I am very happy with the purchase as I think it is better than my old 33. I like spincast reels for finesse fishing with plastics as I can finger the line as I retrieve and feel light bites (mostly smallmouth). My son says it is a "kiddie" reel. I beg to differ. The casting is great, the reel is very smooth and I feel the lightest bites paired with a Berkeley Lightning rod, 6.5 foot medium rod. I plan to upgrade to a St.Croix Mojo. I just really like the feel of working a worm or tube jig with this setup. I've fished it Carolina, drop shot,Texas and everything in between. The line it came with was not that great (Cajun stuff). Used it for a couple trips and then replaced it. I had to experiment a bit to find the best for me. Trilene XL 10lb worked OK. Recently I switched to KastKings Master mono. It performs flawlessly with this reel. Ande works pretty good too. Using a better mono is worth it. Casts and handles great. I really like the KastKing line and will probably stick with it. I have not tried any braid. I use an 8lb Seageur Flouro leader (Blue) most of the time. So, the reel has also held up great as I've used it 3 seasons now and think I'll get 20+ years out of it like my old 33. ... show more

  • Pretty impressive
Style: Size 30 Reel Pattern Name: Fishing Reel
I have been fishing with Zebco products since the mid 1970s when these reels were made in the USA and lasted a life time. Now, they r made in China and last not very long at all. Back in the middle 90s I purchased Zebco 33 Classics and they r still in use today, but I recently purchased some 33 classics and was disappointed. So, I had to move up in price to the Omega Z03 Minus the 7 BB, this is what the Zebco 33 used to be as far as quality. The reel does do cast and retrieve nicely and the BB makes the retrieve fairly smooth. This reel has made it through one fishing season so far, and the biggest fish has been a lot of slab crappie and several striper bass, but nothing big so far, the striper were in the 20 inch range. The reel does OK with a deep water lure on it, but you can tell that it is not made for that type of fishing, it is the wrong tool for lure fishing, but it will work. The reason for the 4 stars is the price, it is over priced. Update May 2012 Still using the reel with no problems. I still think it is over priced. ... show more
