  • Great mid range mallets.
Color: Purple
I needed mallets for symphony, but being new to it, didn't know what to buy. My son is very adept at Marimba, glock, and vibraphone and reccommended these mallets. The price is great. They are well balanced. The heads are tight and provide a beautiful note when using. They are sturdy and well made. Very happy with this product. ... show more

  • Leaves a lasting presence.
Color: Blue
Light weight, good feel in hands. Soft enough for a quiet roll, but hard enough to pierce the ears with craches on all cymbals. Plus when contact is made right on the arm, the experience feels as tho you are getting stung by a bee. The sensation is so much the same. A flick of the wrist the stinging sensation lasts a whole 12 seconds. Great Purchase! ... show more

  • I am a semi-pro musician, for what it's worth
Color: Blue
First off, these mallets actually should be classified as "Very Hard" I am a semi-professional percussionist and percussion teacher. I bought these mallets for a couple of reasons, but mainly because I wanted an inexpensive pair that I could experiment with for different sounds. The color of these mallets is strikingly vivid royal blue, so it is really easy to tell them apart from any other mallet I have ever had. They practically glow... For a beginning percussionist, a much softer version of these mallets would be perfect to start with. These particular mallets are just too hard, even for the entry-level synthetic instruments a new percussionist will be playing on. In my opinion, these mallets should never touch a marimba. They are unbelievably hard and will harm any rosewood (or even synthetic) bar they touch, except for perhaps the very top register (C6 and above) of such an instrument. They are okay for use on a xylophone (real wood or synthetic bars), and just for fun I have used them on the glockenspiel/bell kit a couple of times in rehearsals with a surprisingly sharp and clear sound. I probably wouldn't use them much on a vibraphone except in the upper register (C5 and above) as they give a hard and harsh sound, though not quite as harsh as a plastic or metal mallet would have (which you shouldn't ever use on a vibraphone anyway, but for comparison's sake have I mentioned it). They sound okay on a suspended cymbal (again, for beginning percussionists it won't matter much) and can be used for a variety of other auxiliary percussionist instruments. The shaft of the mallets are a bit stiff, which is just fine for a new percussionist as long as correct playing technique is used. I haven't used them long enough or heavily enough to really assess the durability of the yarn, but any yarn or cord mallet should last many years if they are handled correctly and the musician uses proper technique when playing (my go-to set of four marimba mallets [not this brand] is 20 yrs old without any significant signs of wear). Of course, if the heads of the mallets are touched by hands, are exposed to moisture, or put on the ground (all which new/naive percussionists are bound to do), they will fall apart quickly as any mallet would. In summary, this set of mallets are good for a beginning percussionist as long as you buy a softer version. If you are looking for a pair of "Very Hard" mallets, these will work great. They should last indefinitely if proper playing technique and general care is used. ... show more

  • Excellent Percussion Mallet
Color: Purple
Over 40 years of playing, these are the best Yarn Percussion Mallets I have found. Well constructed. Balanced. The symbol sound is bright. The drum head sound is full. Would (and have) recommend to other percussionist.

  • Top Heavy and a little Clumsy
Color: Purple
I ordered these for my kids to use on our Orff instruments. They are incredibly top heavy and don't really compare to a better quality yarn mallet. They are clumsy, but for the price they were still a good option for us based on the amount of mallets we needed. As for durability, they haven't broken yet under the abusive use of a 3 and 7 year old. ... show more
