I've used this particular electric power auger with 4", 6", and 12" augers with and without a 20" extension in hard rocky soil with roots and larger rocks causing it to kick back and stall. But with persistent effort on my part I never had it jam in a hole, and never had to abandon a partially dug hole. This machine is worth the money.

I got this to build a covered patio and fence. It works better than I expected. One problem is you have to be pretty strong to run it, especially in glacial till soils like mine with layers of rocks. It pulled up rocks the size of base balls, but anything bigger stopped it and you have to be a strong person to hold it. Retiring from a power lineman position I was impressed! The cord is small for a 2 HP motor, they could have put a heavier one on. Thus, the 4 stars.

We used this to dig about six holes each a minimum of 3 foot deep ( using auger extensions ) within days of receiving it. It seems to have an abundance of power while digging through compacted dirt soil. It made the job go super fast compared to hand digging. I went ahead and ordered the 8 inch auger for future jobs. The flighting on the augers seems to be a little thin, that is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 in the sturdiness category.
