  • Keep your expectations low and you'll be impressed Keep your expectations low and you'll be impressed
Bought this for occasional use as some shade and rain protection during the day in-between morning and evening paramotor flights. It's quite cheap, and the... Everything... Is quite thin. The poles will be easy to kink, the fabric easy to tear, but if you're careful with it, this is a sub-$150 6x8 awning. You get what you pay for, and I'm happy with what I got for $119 (on sale). It mounts to my 2008 Honda Element easily, maybe a 30 minute job. The rail of the awning has some play so that perfect 90⁰ brackets are not necessary, which is good because my roof cross bars aren't flat, they angle back about 20⁰ but the awning still slides onto the bolts just fine. Critically, my element has suicide rear doors and I wanted the awning to cover the opening of both doors, so as you can see it had to mount quite far forward. Doing 70 mph, I notice no wobbling or shaking or even excess road noise (though to be clear I'm already driving a brick...) The awning comes with 2 ropes that needed modification to actually cinch tight, and 2 small stakes, as well as wrenches and mounting hardware which I found adequate. By leaving the 90⁰ mounting brackets on the roof cross bars and loosening the bolts on the awning's rail design, I can slide this off the car in 5 minutes and reinstall when I plan a new trip. Deployment and retraction is a hard task solo. There's no graceful way to do it, it's all going to flop around on you. Don't overtighten the extension poles, and don't overextend them. You'll want to mark the maximum length minus 8" or so to be safe. Overall, 9/10 would buy again, probably grey though. Tan still lets a lot of light through. ... show more

  • Great product for a great price. I'll be purchasing a second one.
Got a solid couple years of use out of this bad boy. No it didn't break. I was parked in Los Angeles and seems somebody decided to cut and steal it off of the rack :D Installation took a bit of figuring out, but managed to get her all set up in relatively decent amount of time. The actual build up and tear down is relatively simple, however did require some use of tools and a bit of time. Much easier with a second person, especially for setup. It never felt extreeeeemely durable, as the legs are relatively small and dont really have any sort of locking mechanism to hold them in place super well, but this is just speculation as I don't recall ever having any actual issue. I recommend using rope to secure them regardless. Also had a small issue with one of the screw bits somehow getting stuck inside the pole?????? Which was a nissue and rendered it useless for a bit. However, I was able to do some MacGyverin' and get a new nut shoved into the pole with some heat and a mallet that worked great. Will say, I tried reaching out to the company about possible replacement parts, and was told it was pretty much not an option as they are shipped in from china. Glad i figured out a fix to at least get another year out of it before the inevitable theft. Planning to purchase another one as the convinience of an awning is absolutely beautiful and I still dont have pockets deep enough to spend the 300+ for a really nice one. But this one is definitely great value! Next time Im going to be setting up a more proper type of lock or something to make sure some crackhead doesnt screw me over again :D ... show more

  • Good Buy. I will be buying another larger version Good Buy. I will be buying another larger version
I read the reviews, and had low expectations. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and will also be buying a larger size. The product was carefully packaged to eliminate shipping damage. I did not have any of the problems noted in some of the negative reviews. The hardware is all stainless steel. The bag is not upside down. The material is quality and thicker than I expected. The Velcro straps are strong and well sewn / durable. It was much easier to set up by myself than I expected, but it would be a challenge in heavy wind.. The aluminium vertical and horizontal poles have rectangular rubber isolators to eliminate rattling when stowed, a nice touch I did't expect at this price point. If I had paid twice as much, I would have complained that the stainless steel brackets were punched without finish clean up to remove the tooling marks and sharp edges. I also would have taken issue that the bolts should also have washers. Five minutes with some 400 grit and a handful of washers, not a problem. The brackets are very generic, which is great for me since I have several applications. If you expect this to bolt up to your Audi without any tools - this is not for you. Summary - good buy if you have basic mechanical skills. ... show more

  • Works great, perfect for the truck Works great, perfect for the truck
Color: Gray Size: 6.6'x8.4'
This awning is perfect for the beach. Adds some much needed shade. The awning is very sturdy and the brackets are very strong. I mounted to my bedrack and it tucks up out of the way so I can still fit my Kayaks and Bicycles. The cover keeps everything tidy when it is stored away, and I can fit some extra stakes in there for different conditions. Setup of the awning is really easy, just unroll it, extend the legs, and then extend the horizontal supports, velcro the strips to the horizontal supports and then set the guy lines. The guy lines are perfect to anchor the corners of the awning in any winds. I would recommend this awning to someone looking to stay on a budget, but still wanting something that will last. ... show more

  • Nice Awning, Wore Down Faster Than Expected
Purchased this as a gift and my husband really enjoys it. It gets used fairly often and works well for providing shade. However, exposure to rain and heat seemed to wear it down quicker than expected. We noticed a small hole within about a week that gradually became larger. For the price, I would have liked it to be a bit more durable. ... show more

  • Better than expected.
I was leery about purchasing this awning after reading the other reviews. I was concerned about receiving the awning installed upside down on the bracket as others have described. But I decided to take a chance because the value seemed worth the dice roll. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well packaged the awning was and when I opened up the awning I found that it had been installed the correct way in relation to the outside zipper. I wonder if the manufacturer has read the feedback from previous customers and made the change, because I did not have to modify or flip the orientation of the awning to have the zipper down. I did not install the awning with the included hardware, I bought ARB mounts because there is a third mounting point on those and it seems like it would be more sturdy. I've only driven with it for the last 24 hours, but everything seems very sturdy and well-built. If I don't update this review, it means I had no issues in my upcoming camping trip. To summarize, if you were concerned about the orientation of the awning, it seems as though that problem for manufacturing has been fixed and it seems like a great quality for the money. ... show more

  • Update. Cheap plastic mounts caused total failure Update. Cheap plastic mounts caused total failure
Color: Gray Size: 6.6'x8.4'
Update. Two good gusts of wind mangled this thing. The vertical poles were buried into the ground about 6 inches and ropes tied down to stakes on one side and a log on the other. The failure points were the bolts at the end of each horizontal pole that inserts into the awning. The bolts were still securely attached to the awning frame but no longer attached to the poles. The mount inside each pole-end was a super cheap piece of plastic that sheared easily. The first gust broke the plastic on one side and left the horizontal pole hanging. The second gust broke the plastic on the other side and then destroyed the other pole and frame. I think the cheap build and price is probably fine for a small awning, especially in good weather. But the large 8x6 size is just too big for the mounts and frame to handle. ###### Works pretty well, easy to set up, and super cheap. The metal frame feels a bit fragile so I always take my time setting it up and putting it away. I never extend out the horizontal poles until I have a leg to attach it too. It starts to bend the frame otherwise. The awning came assembled correctly on mine and the zipper is on the bottom as it should be. It also came with a simple install kit which worked fine for my stock Toyota roof rack. The mounting hardware is pretty cheap and bends easily. After a few months of use it flexes and sags a bit. I'm going to replace it with the ARB style mounting brackets which should be a bit more solid After using it for a while and in heavy rain more than a few times, I have removed 1 star. 1) The nylon straps that keep the awning wrapped up are outside the case instead of inside. This means as you are rolling up the awning you have to hold it in place with one hand, then fuss with the zipper that doesn't want to close unless you hold the zipper sides close together. 2) The zipper hangs down after you have zipped it up. Using my stock roof rack and the mounting brackets from the awning, it hits the top of the car. I had to glue a bit of Velcro to hold it tight to the case so it won't wear away my paint. 3) The nylon strap on the outside of the case and the low mounting brackets means they always get trapped in the car doors when the awning it out. When it's raining it drips water into the car. 4) The awning material itself is fairly thin and doesn't create a stiff surface when deployed. So when it's raining you have to have a very aggressive slope otherwise it just ends up catching and holding a ton of water. So you lose a bunch of headroom. Not a bad purchase, but if this one breaks I'll spend up and get something more sturdy and better designed. ... show more

  • 4 stars to start, we will see where this goes.... 4 stars to start, we will see where this goes....
Purchased for an overlanding trip with off grid camping. I plan to sleep in a hammock under the awning. I mounted it to the cargo basket of a 2004 Grand Cherokee. The mounting hardware didn't really work with my application, and I honestly didn't like the looks of it anyway. I used the supplied M8 bolt, along with my own M8 stainless nut with a spot of blue Loctite, and a stainless split washer under the bolt head. For mounting brackets I used a Nilight "Horizontal Bar Clamp Mounting Kit", with 4 clamps - available here on Amazon. I used all four Nilight clamps to mount. I have not completely deployed it yet, as it was raining. I plan to camp this weekend so I will try it out then and add some more pics.... Noted thus far: The extruded back plate is really nice and is likely the majority of the cost here. Very stiff. The boot that goes over the closed unit seems pretty heavy as well, although I am not a big fan of the zipper used. I would rather see 2 zippers that meet in the middle that can clip together. Instead the zipper is facing the front of the Jeep, head on into 75mph wind on the freeway, and I am betting will unzip itself in the wind. I also don’t like the looks of the stitching of the zipper track at the very end, and am a little concerned of it fraying and coming apart on the freeway over 1000’s of miles. I added a small tie wrap to secure the zipper pull for now, and plan to fab a plastic cap to cover the end during transport. Another review on here noted an upgrade made to prevent failure of the pole hinges, and I 100% see the point. The hole through the poles that allow a bolt to pass through for a hinge point, are too big for the bolt. The other reviewer hacked 1" off of the hinged ends, and drilled smaller holes that are better sized to the hinge bolt for a tighter fit with less wobble in the wind. I plan to do the same before the overlanding trip, and will add pics here. The awning fabric itself is on the thin side and won't even give it a chance to prove it is water proof - I plan to spray it with camp dry as soon as I open it. I may well be water proof, but I would rather spray it down before I am cold and wet with a drip on my face at 2am. In short, I had to dock a point for the zipper – it could very easily be a better design, and the ends stitched better. But overall, so far, it is worth the low price! I do indeed update all my reviews as far back as Amazon will let me, so this will be updated with actual field use, mods, and more pics. ***UPDATE 5.1.2023*** - I finally opened it for the first time as part of prepping for my trip. One thing to note, is it next to impossible to open with one person if the wind is blowing. The wind took it away from me and mangled the already too big thru hole in the poles, and the track they mounted in. I straightened the bent hinge points for the poles, and went ahead and made the "upgrade" I noted above that another user mentioned. To upgrade, remove all the poles - both vertical and both horizontal poles. Cut the end of the pole off, just enough to remove the factory thru holes. Be sure and extend the pole enough before you cut, or you will cut through the plastic cam lock mechanism inside that locks the extended pole. Drill new holes as close to the bolt size as possible. If I recall correctly, they were 8mm bolts and I used an 8.5mm drill bit. I also added some stainless fender washers to take up all the slop between the poles and the mounting point where they hinge. Note the pictures. Also note how big the factory hole is around the bolt as compared to after I cut and re-drilled. I am not docking an additional star on any of this for 2 reason. First, it was my fault the wind pulled the awning away from me - the OEM can't control the weather. Second, this is literally the cheapest awning of this size. I will still get my money's worth out of it, despite having to make repairs/upgrades. If you don't want to apply the same effort, I would NOT recommend this awning. You really can't buy the cheapest one out there and expect it to perform like the ones that cost TWICE as much. ... show more
