Well, the reviews were accurate, luckily only one of the chisels I received was skewed, I removed it from the handle, filled the hole with oak and reset it. If it were the chisels w/ square shanks, I would've returned the set to Amazon. As you can see they came sharpened on a course grinder.. unusable like this in my opinion, after properly sharpening on a wet stone sharpener w/ the proper jigs, that is what one would be expecting to receive at minimum. Long story short, the handles are Oak the chisels are High speed steel and the case is ok. Expect to invest some time and effort to make these usable. Some additional foam in the case to keep them from rattling around and move on. If you want to save money, put in the time and effort they'll suffice. if you can't sharpen them yourself, move on and spend a bit more for some real quality chisels... the test dowel is cheap pulpy wood yet still turned nicely. Hopefully they will hold and edge and not require frequent sharpening. I will update this review. ... show more

    • Never used a lathe before
These are very nice for turning pens. Their size makes them very easy to use. I like the control that I have with them when turning small items. I had never used a lathe before last month and after watching a few videos online I was able to teach myself to make very nice pens. The metal portion of the tools fit snugly in the wood base. I have made about 10 pens so far from several different types of hard wood and I have not had to sharpen the tools yet. Overall, these are a good beginner's tool set. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. For the price these are a good deal. They did come in not super straight so not sure if that will break later or not. I Haven't used them on any hard woods but they sliced thru my pen blanks I got in a kit like butter. So not a bad deal just dont expect them to be perfectly straight ... show more

    • This is a great low-end set of turning tools for pen making
Great set of beginners turning tools for pens or other small projects on the lathe! The price is great without breaking the bank. They are made from HSS and keep a fairly good edge, depending on the wood species you are turning. The box which come with it are great for shipping in keeping them protected - after that, it is worthless. The latching mechanism lasted two or three openings after that the lightweight metal folded on itself! I like to use this set for the final touches to my work - not made for roughing or heavy removal. ... show more

I was trying to be budget minded and purchase this set but the chisels were obviously poorly crafted (or poor quality control). The gouge was bent about 10* off center and all of the “brass” trim rings were rusty and varnished. The gouge snapped almost immediately so I returned the set and bought a brand name which did not disappoint. ... show more
