  • Great Value
If you have been winding up your yarn balls by hand, this will change your life. I have wanted a yarn ball winder for many, many years, ever since trying a friend's. I could never justify the expense. The cheaper ones usually only accommodate 3 ozs, which seems way too small. You also read about them breaking. The more expesive ones are, well, more expensive. Why spend the money when I was doing just fine balling my yarn by hand, with the added benefit of not having to store a yarn ball winder? My ten year old has really gotten into fiber arts this year and asked if it might be possible to get a yarn ball winder. That was the incentive I needed. I ordered this as a surprise but had to try it out myself first. I really couldn't be happier with the value of this particular yarn ball winder. Two things make this work really well, and once you figure them out, you are good to go. I now have a drawer full of nice yarn cakes. 1. You need to hold the yarn with one hand at the correct tension so that the yarn cake is ncie and compact. 2. With your other hand, you need to turn the handle at an even, and not too fast, rate. Once you get those two things down, you are on your way to lovely yarn cakes. There are only two things I would change with this. One is that there is a wingnut that is used to screw the clamp in place. I think something nicer and more user friendly could be used. It is definitely a cheap wingnut. The other thing is that I wish the arm locked in place better. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this. This is a larger capacity yarn ball winder, and it says it can handle up to 4-8 ounces of yarn. The largest skeins I had on hand were 6 ounce skeins of worsted weight yarn, and it handled those with no problem. If you knit or crochet, you will be very happy with this. ... show more

  • Works best on finer yarn
It was easy to set up on my table. Pretty much the same as the winder I have. It is made to be able to wind up to bulky size yarn as far as I can tell. It comes with a thread snipper and a drawstring bag. First I would a hank of worsted weight yarn 200yd and it did ok, the cake was a little lopsided but usable. The second skein was some sock yarn 400yd and that went much better. I think it’s a good winder and I would use it on my finer weight and use my other one for the heavier weights. ... show more

  • Allows For Greater Organization
After I discovered corner to corner crochet, graphgans, and intarsia, I strongly considered investing in a yarn winder just to help save my sanity. Anyone familiar with the technique knows that keeping al, of the various yarn colors separate can sometimes be a struggle, often resulting in frustrating tangled balls and numerous yarn bobbins all over the place. This yarn winder has helped me to be a bit more organized with my fiber crafts. I yarn winder comes with the winder, a pouch for convenient storage, and a pair of mini scissors.. The clamp connected to the winder allows you to attach it to a table for stability. ... show more

  • Smooth mechanism and easy to assemble
This yarn winder is super easy to set up and comes with a nice bag for storage along with some clippers. Despite having never used a yarn winder before, I found the instructions to be quite intuitive. I balled two skeins of bulky (5) yarn at 109 yards each to test. Winding itself goes pretty smoothly, especially if you add a little extra tension by holding the yarn several inches before the guide. This was near the winder's limit, it seemed -- much more wouldn't have fit well. Yarn winds snugly and is easy to pull from the center when complete. Saved me lots of time winding by hand! ... show more

  • Yarn winder.
This is a little difficult to use left handed, but not that bad. I had some issues clipping onto my kitchen table as I was not aware there was a lip. I was able to wiggle it onto the counter. Its easy to get going and makes yarn clean up so much easier.

  • Works. Kind of.
I was excited to try this as the electric one was a bust. This worked for a while but then the yarn dropped down, I unwound it thinking I could unwind to where it dropped down but then it ended up a mess so I had to cut and take the first part off. I wound what was left and when I took it off it was so loose the middle started to unwind. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. The problem ( in my opinion ) is that there should be more than one size piece. The weave is too big. ... show more

  • Way easier to use than one i had before
I love the set up to this. This was easy to put together, and the metal yarn holder to feed the yarn to the spool stayed in place! I have another one that the little metal bit would fall over all the time so i am over the moon that this stayed up. I was able to make a cake out of a whole big twist Living yarn skein at 3.8oz at 199yards. The little velvet bag is great for storage or travel. Very happy with this. ... show more

  • Good yarn winder, but expensive for the quality
I would've rated this five-starts if it was $15 to $20, but at close to $30 I would expect higher quality for some parts. The unit works well once you get the hang of keeping tension on the yarn and the turn speed. The arm that guides the yarn into place does not say open/perpendicular to the winding mechanism without help (we put a sewing sandbag on it to help); when the arm folds in it causes the yarn to jump the base and get tangled. The clamp mechanism feels cheap and isn't as easy to connect compared to other winders. For the price, it's a good find, but I still feel it is overpriced for the quality. ... show more
