For the money this is an excellent hitch mounted hoist! Keep in mind "for the money." This is the only hoist I've ever purchased, but I have seen others up close. I purchased mine as others did to remove and reinstall a 5th wheel hitch in the bed of my truck. The materials seem to be easily strong enough to lift it's load limits at both the 250 and 500lb positions. As noted by other reviewers, it does come up short in a couple of areas. First, as you can see in a couple of photos some nylon spacers would have been a very inexpensive parts improvement for the function of the lift. If you don't have the spacers on hand, and you don't want to wait assembly until you can purchase them, it hardly seems worth the trouble of retrofitting the lift. Also, on the front wheel where the cable exits the boom, a pulley with a retainer would keep the cable from jumping off the wheel, which it does relatively easily when a load isn't present. The other option would be to do what another reviewer did and that would be to place a bolt through the boom just above the wheel close enough to keep it from jumping its track. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill too large of a hole in the boom. I'm not an engineer, but every additional hole which is drilled in the arm, potentially weakens the boom, and would most likely void any warranty,or legal claims for damages or injury from the manufacturer. That said, this is still a great lift! Also, as noted by everyone else, there are no instructions for assembly, which is crazy! It would be so simple for the manufacturer to include instructions for assembling the lift. Maybe it's a way of avoiding liability, but to me it's just negligence on their part. But, I'm no attorney, so maybe it's just an oversight, however, with all of the reviews noting this difficieny, it would be so simple to rectify. I've included a photo of the exploded diagram of the parts which is included. Couple of problems with this diagram as well: 1. It lacks detail. Most parts are obvious as to their location or positioning, but there are several instances where the parts and/or their position aren't clear. Several times I had to reverse course and remove and reinstall parts in their correct position. For most individuals that would be purchasing a lift to begin with, assembly won't be difficult, but it would be so much easier with instructions and even a second sheet with black and white photos of those areas which could use more details. One plus on my lift which other reviewers noted as problematic is the spooling of the cable on the winch. Others complained of their cable being a rats nest, or like a backlash on a baitcasting reel, however mine was perfect. However, it was loose, so I simply had to unwind the winch carefully to keep from creating a backlash, but it wasn't a big deal at all. The one thing I noted was that even though I tried to load the cable under hand pressure to simulate a load, when it came to actually picking up a a load, it pulled the cable deep into the other wrappings of the spooled cable. I'm hoping this doesn't become a problem with future use. All things said, this is a great lift for the money. It worked exactly as planned! Another foot of arm on the boom would have allowed me to lift the hitch and drop it exactly back in to place, but lowering it into place leaves me a foot short. I was able to lift the hitch without any issues out of its brackets, however, I will have to manhandle the hitch back into place. Prior to this purchase I had to call my son and son-in-law to help with lifting this hitch into and out of the bed of my truck. The 5th wheel hitch used in my longbed truck was heavy, but I was always able to lift it on my own from the ground to the truck bed. However, with a shortbed truck I was forced to go with a slider hitch, which is a beast! It was impossible to even lift it off the ground. So, now I should be able to load and unload the hitch by myself. I named my new assistant D2M2, representing the initials of my son and son-in-law.

good stuff, used to swap motors with a truck hitch on dirt/gravel in place of standard engine hoists. not as solid if it's at an angle or towards the side, but does hold. the cable fell off the pulley and got stuck between the pulley and the frame, but that's user error.

I bought this to pull a Subaru engine. I was going to buy a regular motor hoist but this thing looked like if might be useful for other things. It went together quick. Stick the base in the trailer hitch first then build off of that. It was able to lift my engine just fine on the 250lb setting. I was able to rotate the arm 90 degrees just fine with the motor hanging. It was able to clear without hitting my hood. The winch has its uses but if lifting something heavy just use a chain. The winch binds up, theres like 30 feet of cable. Took me a while to unbind the winch. I’ll probably weld some D rings on the end so i can just use the arm instead of the winch. Overall a pretty sweet unit. If you buy the cheap $50 engine stand the base fits a 2” receiver so you can stick that on there and wheel it around. Weight is pretty heavy, maybe 70lbs. It can be a bear to handle but seems to be alright.

I have not used this crane yet for a load, so I'll update this review when I do. Assembly took about an hour for this highly experienced mechanic, but there should be instructions and not just a parts schematic. The design and manufacture seems reasonably good for a Chinese product, but there are at least three significant flaws that required additional work to correct. The U-bracket at the top of the lower crane arm that receives the bolt for the rear cable pulley and that also acts as the hinge for the upper arm, arrived significantly out of square such that I had to use a pipe clamp to compress the sides of the bracket in order to be able to install the flat and lock washer onto the hinge/pulley bolt, and even then I could tighten the nut only about half way onto the bolt threads. The biggest design failure is that there is nothing to prevent the winch cable from jumping the tread (groove) of the large rear (at the boom hinge) pulley sheave. The smaller front (boom end) pulley sheave is protected by a second bolt that goes through the boom extension but nothing is provided for the more important rear pulley. So I drilled two 5/16" holes 3/4" from the rear of the boom and just above the pulley to insert another bolt as a cable keeper (see picture #1). Beware that as you lower the boom with the hydraulic jack from horizontal to the downward storage position, the cable will tighten on the winch, so it's important to release the ratchet dog while lowering and then reset it to keep the cable tight. Also beware that the winch will arrive with the cable loose and poorly spooled onto the winch drum. It is imperative to unspool the entire cable and rewind it into the winch with a load on the hook or a leather-gloved hand on the cable and wind it carefully so that it spools evenly to prevent kinking. My cable came with a broken strand of wire sticking out, so don't handle yours without leather gloves and care. The 1" jack piston connects on a long bolt inside of a 1-5/8" U-bracket, and there is nothing to keep the piston centered in the upper boom. So I cut two pieces from a 3/4" PEX pipe to form spacers (see picture #2). The third significant problem was that the bearing race at the bottom of the crane receiver mount, to match the tapered roller bearing on the bottom of the crane's cylindrical frame, tends to fall out if the mount is inverted during installation or storage. I somewhat fixed this by a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the race so that it's less likely to fall out, but it still requires care in assembly, disassembly and storage. I now keep the upper crane assembly mounted into the lower hitch receiver section (and locked with the hand screw) and remove and install it as a unit, using the extended foot as a pivot. It's heavier this way (70 lbs total) but more secure and I don't need to worry about keeping the roller bearing clean. Additionally, it seemed unnecessary to get out tools to remove and replace the boom extension bolt, so I replaced that with a hitch receiver pin and keeper (see picture #3). It's a shame that such a potentially useful crane has this many design flaws. P.S. I also added a fixed grab hook to the end of the boom, using the bolt holes for the "keeper" on the small end pulley (see picture #4), for lifting a load by chain without using the cable winch.

The box arrived a little damaged, but this is expected due to the weight of the items. I decided on this one because of the cable, and I thought it would lift higher than the ones without cable. There are no directions, just an exploded diagram. I did have to grind down a part to get the large wheel in the back to work for the cable. Once I had it all together, I figured out the straps to be tighter with less play. It easily picked up the generator, but it was very stiff to turn the crane. It took two people to remove it from the truck. My plan is to install the gen it into the back of my 5th wheel. Overall, I had a great experience with this and recommend it.

My kids (11 & 12) were able to use this to lift 5 gallon buckets of wet sloppy clay out of a 5 foot deep trench that had caved in. The buckets were so heavy they could not slide them on cement once they go them up. I only gave this 4 stars due to three engineering issues that I'll explain below: Pros: It is build heavy enough to handle the load of 500 lbs The ram is rated for 2 ton, and the winch is rated for 1000 lbs. The winch cable is long enough (I believe 25 feet) that I was able to winch some large silver maple chunks up a steep embankment and into my truck. The lower unit has a thrust bearing providing a effortless swing when loaded. The two pulleys have bearings, the large one in the back has two bearings. The pulleys have deep enough grooves where the cable stays well tracked. There is a grease zert on the bottom housing to keep the whole section that turns well greased. Cons: The assembly instructions were missing or don't come with it. With the help of pictures provided by users and the parts list I was able to put it together without too many mistakes. The bearings on the large back pulley keep slipping out causing the cable to slip between the bracket and the pulley. Once this happens you have to dissemble the two pieces because there is not enough room to get the cable back out. I ended up using some 3/4 electrical conduit to make some spacers to keep them in place. Of course only after it happened several times. The grease zert must have taken a hit during shipping because it broke off as soon as I attached the grease gun. The zert should be inserted by the user. There is a flaw in the way the back pulley is attached. Either there is too little or too much space because if you don't keep your hand on the cable guiding it onto the pulley while you take up the slack, the cable jumps the pulley and jams itself between the bracket and pulley with no way of getting it out except for taking the unit apart. I know it's not a big deal to guide the cable but once it is frayed it hurts getting that steel stuck in your fingers. The stabilizing leg will not take both pins while in the full up position so there is no place to store it. I am going to take the stabilizing leg off and replace it with a trailer tongue jack so it always touches the ground when I start cranking and two, once I put weight in the back of the truck and the truck "settles" the leg is stuck in place because the truck is resting on it. I now have to get another jack up the lift up the lift so I can shorten the leg.

After receiving the hoist and assembling it, I found that it was to short for lifting my 5th wheel trailer hitch from the bed of my pickup. I put in to return the item and all went well until the seller issued the return label and I have to pay the postage. The postage to ship it back was $150.00 through UPS and I would need to reduce the weight of each package. Needless to say, I am now selling this hoist on Craig's List and will never purchase from this reseller again. I give one star for overall rating and ease of assembly, but three stars for value and craftsmanship. If I could give negative stars for sellers customer service, I would do that.

This product unfortunately is of very poor quality of materials and construction, I works but barely, hydraulic cylinder shaft is already rusting, poor fit into 2" receiver. Hand winch is terrible clunky of poor quality. Ground support "leg" is a joke. Overall height that you can lift anything to is too low for more than a box a foot high. You cannot lift anything over the side of a regular pickup bed. You have to be careful that you don't injure your self when using the "control" lock for the swivel that is very poor in construction, adjustment and use. I highly doubt you could lift a V8 into the back of your truck with this thing, I would not try it on a bet. I have a lot of trouble with a 200lb 3x3x2 foot box. It will lift it off the ground but trying to swivel in on the the bed of the truck...well it's dangerous. Not worth the money paid. Another example of crap made in china that we stupid Americans buy trying to save a buck
