  • Perfect for fence posts
I bought this along with an 8” bit to install a fence around our property. It’s tough enough for about 70% of terrain but hates roots and will kick back a little (if you’re strong you can use your leg to keep it from twisting on you). When we got into our wooded area we had to do 30% auger/70% shovel since there were roots and vines everywhere. Overall this is absolutely worth its price. My wife and I doubled our speed once this came in the mail. We’ve done about 30 posts with this so far and are still going strong. ... show more

  • Money well spent!
I was hesitant at first to buy this Auger. I was not sure if I can handle it (I'm 5'4"/110lbs). So, I've asked on Amazon about it. Thanks to all the responses that I've got, I purchased this auger and can say that I am very happy with my purchase. It came very nicely packed, nothing missing, and easy to put together. I already used it several times, "drilling" around 10-15 holes each time and it works great. Not too heavy, and as long as you keep it firmly and straight - it does its job perfectly. This auger is strong enough to go through the tough red clay. I was able to plant over 40 shrubs and trees in just 2 weekends. Money well spent! ... show more

  • Damn good auger! Got the job done! Check out my pro tips though!
Like everyone else in this pandemic world, I'm at home all day, e'eryday, and as such, I'm focused on all things DIY and home improvement. One of our bigger DIY home improvement projects has been to install a fence. Given that I've never put in a fence before having an auger at hand was instrumental. The $185 I paid (it's about $20 higher now as I write this) for this paid dividends. Sometimes I could dig a 2.5' hole in 15 minutes. It was insanely fast. Of course, that wasn't most holes because there were plenty of rocks and roots which rock and rolled me for sure. But, if it wasn't for this auger, the whole job would've taken helluva a lot longer especially because I dug 45 holes (I'm insane I know). Even if there were rock and roots that blocked my way this auger helped loosen up the tight dirt and all the obstacles packing it. Pro Tip #1: When drilling keep your legs as wide as possible so as to clear the diameter of the tool. That is, if you care about the family jewels and generally protecting your legs from getting bruised up. A bump here and there never hurt anyone but when you have to dig a ton of holes and when sometimes digging a hole could take up to two hours (I had some gnarly rocks/roots in my yard) you want to prevent as much self-damage as possible. When you hit a tough rock/root, this tool will not budge and it's not the fault of the tool. It's just when a powerful force meets the immovable objects the latter seems to win most of the time. Pro Tip #2: When drilling try to go in for 5-15 seconds (depending on how much depth you are getting per dig) and pull up from the ground so as to clear the dirt from the drill bit. Doing this will seem like it takes more time but it will reduce overall effort. Unless you are awesome at deadlifting heavy things (and even then you still want to do this because I deadlift something like 385-400lb pre-COVID-19 and I found this to be helpful), you will want to reduce the amount of weight you have to pull from the ground. The drill is heavy enough. Pro Tip #3: Once you've loosened up enough dirt, get the tool out of there and use a good 'ol clamshell post hole digger and get the loosened dirt out. This will be a lot faster and it'll allow you to get to the lowest depth to keep digging much faster/easier. Otherwise you'll be fighting through the already loosened dirt, roots, and rocks instead of being able to work through without those hindrances. Good luck with your digging! ... show more

  • Great tool but some limitations
I dreaded using my manual posthole digger to dig 14 new holes for a new fence. This tool is a great helper but is not perfect. Read the reviews and heed the warnings about drilling too deep too fast. I got the auger stuck twice in my clay soil and had to dig it out by hand. Don’t rock it back and forth to loosen it like did! The 4” auger bent and was unusable after the second dig out. Luckily I had bought an extra 6” auger bit which dug a better hole anyway. There is no reverse so getting stuck means digging it out. Avoid this problem by continuously drilling down and pulling up. This brings dirt out of the hole and works pretty well. I still had to use a manual post hole digger because most of the soft dirt falls back into the hole but the electric post hole digger made it a lot easier. The bits are 30 “ long so if you want to go deeper you use your manual post hole digger. Be careful about running into roots, rocks or concrete. When it meets an unmovable object it can jerk suddenly in the opposite direction and that handle is sure to hit you in the thigh or worse! ... show more

  • Good investment
I am a young for my age 64 and the gas powered two man monster my husband had was just more than I could use. I couldn't crank it, couldn't hold it up if I did get it cranked. This one is excellent for any small job I have. I have planted bushes, put in small posts to run my pole beans on. Easy to use, not to heavy and no cranking. Good investment. ... show more

  • Ample power, easy to handle and makes post hole drilling a breeze
Worked well for drilling holes for 16 fence posts this week. I used a 6 inch diameter auger with 8 inch extension to easily drill 34 inch deep holes in sandy soil. It has enough power and torque to twist out of my hands when hitting an immovable object such as a large deep root so a heavier and more powerful unit is unnecessary. I powered it with two 100 ft 12 AWG extension cords in series plugged into a 20 amp house outlet with no problems. I got this electric unit for instant-on convience as opposed to having to wrestle with pull-starting a gas unit that might take longer to get started than the time it takes to drill the hole. Also it doesn’t spew oily exhaust fumes in my face. ... show more

  • Useful product gets the job done
This electric earth auger worked very well for me. We made large holes and planted 27 shrubs. My son maneuvered it and he got quite good with it after the first two holes. I have to say the 4 inch diameter bit that came with it was bent on the second hole due to hard Georgia clay soil. We purchased the 8 inch diameter bit and made the other 25 holes with no problem. The auger is not too heavy. It’s missing a reverse gear however therefore we used it carefully only inserting half way then retrieving it, clearing the dirt and doing another deeper hole if needed. ... show more
