Took this compact umbrella with me on vacation where wet conditions were expected, and it really came in handy. Nice compact size with a light weight that wasn't too cumbersome to throw in my day pack. When needed, it was easy to use and provided good coverage for one person (not really a two-person shade but I wouldn't expect that in a compact). It did find it was a little hard to close, you really had to put some effort into it, which made it a bit awkward when trying to close in a hurry with a crowd behind you. The material was nice and repelled water well - easy to shake off before putting on the cover (once you got it close that is!). This umbrella is well made, very sturdy and compact. The first thing I noticed is that it is their most compact model, but it is well made. To open you press a button on the short handle, but hang on because the spring action is very strong and pops right up. The ribs are different than compact competitors, they appear engineered and have springs with retaining wires along with the multi piece ribs, not the usual metal rib by itself. The springs may have something to do with its wind proof claim, I wasn't able to test that function. The fabric appears to be nylon, two colors, and possibly coated as it felt slick. The fabric is also a tad thicker than another very popular compact umbrella I own. I don't doubt its UV protection claims. When open its good for one person, for two you would have to be walking arm in arm and might still get a bit wet, but ideal for one person as a compact umbrella. If you want better protection buy a larger one. I keep a compact umbrella in my car so I always have one on hand. To close you press the button on the handle again and the head very quickly pops to fold. This action is very strong, be careful. Then you have to gather the folds and collapse it down on the stem like any other compact umbrella. It takes a bit to do this as the fabric is a little thick so gathering it together and tying it with the attached strap with Velcro isn't easy. The spring that unfurls it and that you have to compress to fold the handle is very strong. All this is well made, better than many other umbrellas I've had. The handle unfortunately is quite small in length, 2-1/2". This would fit a smaller hand, larger ones will have an issue holding this. There is a plastic strap included on the handle, but unfortunately it is quite small, i could not fit my hand through it, (I have a large hand). This comes with a matching fabric cover and a very nicely made semi transparent plastic cover with a nylon rope drawstring. The manufacturer seems to have gone the extra mile with most of the design, but the handle and strap were not among those which is unfortunate. From all the little improvements the unit is on the heavier side but that is not a problem to me. All in all, a good umbrella, better than most. I took off one star due to the handle and strap issue. I would have liked an easier to fold umbrella but that is a fair trade off for better quality and thicker fabric. ... show more

The double layers of material block out light so that's where it gets its UPF rating. Also makes it a little heavier and harder to close. It has standard umbrella fittings; however, the spring opening mechanism is extraordinarily strong, makes it really pop open when you hit the button and then you must reverse that spring to close it. Others have already posted decent photos of this umbrella, so I won't be adding more. That said, the overall quality of this umbrella appears to be well built and also has a nice red color that my wife and daughter loves. Although advertised more so as UV protection umbrella, it also works relatively well in the rain. The size is relatively small that it can easily be placed in my daughter's backpack when needed and the umbrella also has an automatic open and close function. Retraction of the umbrella also doesn't require much effort after closing unlike some other umbrellas we've seen. Although it's also advertised as being windproof, I find this hard to believe since there's no open section in the canopy that's typically seen in windproof designed umbrellas. I suppose only time will tell should this umbrella be used in a windy storm and hopefully it does hold up as advertised. ... show more

The one thing this umbrella has that most others do not, are the double layers of material. It does block out all the light if you need it to. It makes it look nice also with the two different colors. Other than it, it's mostly standard functionality. The spring opening mechanism is very strong, so it opens fast and hard, but there are a couple of drawbacks to that. Firstly, on a couple of occasions it has shot out of my hand and flew across the room. It needs to be held firmly. Secondly, it makes it a little harder to close. The button collapses the umbrella, which is easy enough, but then you have to push it down into the handle, which takes a small amount of effort. Two other minor things that are not ideal. The handle is small, and makes it harder to hold firmly, hence the flying out of my hand when I opened it. Also, the strap that keeps it neatly closed is too short. Unless you neatly tuck away every pleat, which would take a good 5 minutes, the strap needs to be pulled tight to get it to reach the little velcro square where it attaches.
