  • Holds my bow well
Bought it to make a bow, did not know if it would hold it but it does. I do need to use extra clamps to firmly secure it but it does the job.

  • Not at all “heavy duty”; very cheaply made
As a woodworker myself, my very first impression was made when I first picked up the package that the vise was in: it was surprisingly light for a “heavy-duty” vise. My impression was further enhanced when I opened up the package and held the vice in my hands. This is emphatically NOT a “heavy duty” woodworking vise and should NOT be labeled one. It is primarily made of plastic. To my mind, it borders on false advertising. Moreover, despite the description saying that it has a cast-iron body, it very clearly does not! An outright falsehood. This is a decidedly ultra light duty vise. Compared to most woodworking vices, this is a very light duty, portable vise. It is easily portable, and actual heavy duty vises are anything but easily portable. But that’s not to say this woodworking vise doesn’t have ANY place. It could possibly be used for very small and very lightweight woodworking projects, like making small boxes, for example. It could also possibly be used in arts and crafts projects where small pieces of wood are used. But even here I have my doubts. More on this in a moment. It’s not terribly easy to put this vise together, as simple as it may look. The instructions are lacking, and could be much clearer. The portable vise does easily attach to a table or bench by means of two C-brackets, which are made of both plastic and metal parts—another tell-tale sign of it not being “heavy duty.” And it does have a quick-release function that is always nice to have. But these “pluses” don’t mean a whole lot when the overall quality is in question. As I said, I suppose it could be used for light-duty work or arts & crafts, but even then there are much better, relatively inexpensive vises for those purposes. Much better! The quality of this vise leaves a lot in doubt, especially in terms of its durability. All the plastic on it does not inspire confidence. And even the metal parts are mated with plastic ones, making it very susceptible to breakdown over time. Personally, I honestly can’t recommend this vise, due to its very limited usefulness and its very suspect construction. I would avoid it. I just don’t see it lasting long, even for smaller projects. There are much better options available, even for smaller projects. I hope you found this review helpful. Thanks for reading it, and good luck with your shopping! ... show more

  • Light-duty
The description of the makeup of this vise is misleading as it is mostly a plastic vice. Disregarding that, I have found this vice very useful for light-duty work as well as delicate work. As this is plastic, it has less of a tendency to mar your workpiece. I have lately used this vice over the heavy vices to protect the finish of my piece. It doesn't hold great to the workbench, but if you really crank down on it, it will suffice. The (removable) pins at the top have come in handy as an alternate way of holding your workpiece. This isn't a bad deal given the current price if you're in the market for a light-duty vice. ... show more

  • Needs improvement/modification.
For holding small work pieces when you don't need an extreme amount of clamping force and rigidity, this might be an okay vise. The clamps/hold-downs make it especially suited for temporary setups. While the diamond textured, polymer jaws may leave marks on softer woods like pine, hard woods should be fine. The smooth handle of the main screw doesn't allow for the application of much torque, anything more would exceed the purpose of this vise. As such, it's probably well matched to the limits of the tool. In general, once clamped down to my maple workbench, I found that the bench itself was less rigid than the vise, and was thus not the bottleneck for stability. HOWEVER, it's not perfect. The screws on the underside of the jaws can protrude enough that they may gouge your workbench. I was able to fix this by grinding a bit of the screw heads down. Flat head screws and conical recesses, properly countersunk, would have been the better design. Second, the vise tends to move around while tightening the hold-down brackets, weakening the connection. The brackets should have had threaded holes for holding them firmly in the jaw via screws. In the end, it took $35 worth of my time to make this $35 vise the tool it should have been out of the box. ... show more

  • NOT cast iron
I saw this vise and the description stated "cast iron." It is most definitely NOT cast iron. It's a decent solid piece of plastic, but that's a far cry from iron. However, it isn't without utilization, but use it wisely. I placed this on the edge of my work bench, using the supplied clams, and the set a piece of pine atop and tightened the clamp. It held, as expected, and I was able to plan the pine without much fuss. The "bench dogs" that come with the clamp or a little more than ½" exposed. They work, but this limits the thickness of the wood you can plane. I then got a harder piece of wood, a plan of pecan. This is where things went wonky. The flex in the piece became noticeable. The clamp holdfasts (legs) weren't holding the vise in place. I cranked down on them, but there was still some sway. Ultimately, I did get a few passes with my plane, but with the vise flexing and moving, it was not worth the effort. My take is, it's NOT iron and therefore should be used with soft woods instead of hardwoods. I like the concept though and on days I don't want to be in the shed, I can annoy the wife by bringing it inside and planing while making a mess on the floor. hehehe ... show more

  • Light weight, portable woodworkers vice.
The media could not be loaded. What I like is the portability and light weight characteristics of this device. It is quick to set up and can be attached to an up to 2”thick work surface. Unlike the standard vice, it does doesn’t have to be bolted to the table. The cons are that you are limited to the vice accommodating an object of no more than 4.5” wide and the vice holds onto 1/2” of the work material. There is therefore limited pressure that can be applied to cutting or drilling your subject especially with power tools as the object or vice could dislodge. Finally, the cost is almost that of its heavy duty, larger vice. For me, the flexibility of having a portable, light duty vice and a heavy duty, secured vice is worth the expense. ... show more
