  • Couldn't get a RTX card for MSRP so I went with this 5700 XT
Scalps are grabbing up everything and it's hard to track good deals till I came across this 5700 XT. I am actually quite glad I was pushed to go a different direction then my usual Nvidia route. Radeon has come a long way and this card is perfect for my build. I have just about every game you can think of and this card plays max settings at 1080p, 1440p 60fps+. 4k at 40-45 fps max with a I5 6600k OC 4.2 and just 16GB 1866 DDR3. The only gripe i found out the hard way was this card will not show up till you upgrade to Win10. I was fortunate and had a home edition laying around but i was upset i had to let my Win 8.1 go. There was no driver associated with this card that would go past 17.01 blah blah. So I caved and upgraded to Win 10. Also i need to add the settings and features are so vast associated with this card I am amazed. This also came with Godfall and it plays perfect on 1440p maxed out. I don't care to go pass 60fps and just know this card will run max settings even when you aren't using it 100%. I set it to basically feed it power enough to make my games at least run 60fps and never over so I know this card if you want can exceed that count. Consider purchasing a pilar to help with GPU sag because this card is heavy and it will sag so best invest in one like in my photo that isnt that expensive to make sure your MB is safe and card is safe and level. *Update 11/22/20* Driver Issues Well it took a few days of purchase for the drivers to become an obstacle. With my particular experience with the audio driver issue via connect HDMI to TV. While scouting online looking for a solution in the end there is none. The issue is and varied but mine was audio cuts off randomly and audio driver would just switch off. Utilizing DDU to clean uninstall and freshly put the newest recommended driver, it worked but then went right back to it. Did all the same troubleshooting as suggested online but nothing. Never had this issue with RTX or GTX if that. *Solution* The only way to break this endless cycle of audio issues was to plug via AUX cable into the MB and directly plug into my sound bar system. This locks and enables use of Realtek driver on the MB. Every since I have had no issue. On another note this card is amazing minus the audio issues. This can play 95% of my library 4k max 60fps+ while I can monitor my utilization is only at 70-85% this was set on purpose because I am using a I5 6600k on a Z170 MB. This card is future proof for awhile. *Noise & Heat* I can't hear the fans and they wont spin until it gets under heavy loads. The system is auto and works perfectly. XFX has come a long way from when I last had their card back in the day and I am glad I got the chance to try them out again. Heat is amazing, the highest I have monitored this was 74c this was under heavy loads. My CPU usually goes up to 47c. The power is not even that high and it will adjust accordingly but I have noticed it take as much as 230w which is nothing. I do need to mention I am not utilizing 100% too and don't need too either. ... show more

  • Fear not, absolutely zero driver issues and amazing performance! Works well with PCI passthru.
After hearing of driver issues, I held out until they were fixed. I wanted a card that would do me good for awhile, and as I play on 1080p 144hz, I knew this would be the card. Some say it is overkill, perhaps they are right but if I ever go to 1440p I know I'm ready, monitors are expensive, especially 1440p 144hz!) You can feel quality when you hold it in your hand. Metal backplate, so it's stiff, a little heavy but it doesn't sag too bad, maybe a few degrees. Kinda gives me a Cadillac vibe with the grill. As a note, I use Proxmox as my host operating system, with a windows virtual machine with vfio to pass through the GPU and game. I have had to tinker to get it to work, but it is working with no issues, plenty of guides online. The performance has been nothing short of amazing, especially when you consider the price is $400. Zero blue screens or driver issues, junction temperature is staying at 70°C under full load, and the noise is acceptable. I personally don't care how loud a card is, *as long as the cooling if effective*. Changed the default can curves up much higher, starting at 40% at idle, going to 90% at 100°C. As such I've not seen this card go over 72°C. The fans at 100% are a bit loud, but it's not obnoxious. I am very happy with the cooler design and that XFX refreshed this card, and made it longer. I think that really helps with the temps. Even more pleasing as I am concerned about longevity, a bigger cooler keeps things colder and thus the heat stress at Bay. I had a 1660 super, but found frame rate in games to be lacking at times, which in turn had to lower detail levels. Ultra everything is a breeze for this card, I haven't gamed on PC in many years, so much so I am used to Xbox 360 graphics. The immersion and high refresh rate just make the experience so much better. Sure it's not a 2080, but I feel like I'm getting the performance of a 2070, very close to it (partner has one). I am impressed with the drivers and utilities. AMD has done a great job, with Nvidia, you have to get other utilities to do what AMD includes, like undervotling or fan curves. Room for improvement, but it has won me over so far. Buy with confidence, I love this card. Edit: I should mention those temperatures I listed were at MINIMUM case fan speed, I turned my fans up to max, (10x 140mm cheapo fans @1400rpm) and this card only hits 55C even with an over clock. ... show more

  • Great Video Card, but as of December 2020, look for it on sale!
I have owned this graphics card, the XFX Rx 5700xt THICC III, since July. I waited this long so that I could really use it before writing a review. I'll admit, back in July (December 2020 now), I was a little hesitant to purchase this card based on some of the reviews complaining about driver instability and crashes. However, I have had no issues in my PC with this. The card has been very stable in my use case. I play a handful of games, some that are taxing to the PC as a whole, others which are not. For reference, I play Call of Duty, Fortnite, Cities Skylines, Microsoft Flight Sim 2020, and Rocket League mostly. Playing these games is a joy with this graphics card. Rocket League is buttery smooth, as is Cities Skylines. Fortnite and Call of Duty you can easily play on max settings, but depending on your monitor you may want to turn some of the settings down to get high refresh rates. I play on a 1080p, 144 Hz monitor. On Call of Duty and Fortnite I get about 125 fps on average, which for me is plenty. I will say, the games runs a little smoother if I put the graphics in game at about one level down from Max, mostly because the fps are then about 150, which matches the refresh rate of the monitor better. Noise levels are great in most situations. I have a case (Lian Li Lancool 2 performance) designed for airflow, as such it will be louder than other cases. This video card runs its three fans at 0 rpm at idle or when doing normal web browsing, video watching, Facebook posting, etc. While playing most games, it rarely gets above 2,000 rpms, which is audible, but not annoying to me. Max speed on the fans is 3,000 rpm. Above 2,000 rpm, it does get loud. Only 1 game that I play (MS FS2020) pushes the card this hard, but even then it is only at certain points during the game. Most of the time the noise levels are perfectly fine to my ears. A couple of negatives: First, this generation of AMD video card does not support Ray Tracing. If this is a big deal to you then this is not the graphics card for you. Second, with the recent release of NVIDEA 3000 series cards and AMD 6000 series cards, you should not buy this card for anywhere near its original MSRP (~$420-$440). The new generation of graphics cards are about the same price, and will outperform this card in all areas. That said, current graphic card supply is crazy low this holiday season. Overall, I would recommend this video card to almost anyone, but that will depend on your budget. For the same price, get a new generation graphics card. If you can find this one on sale and you do not need top of the line performance or ray tracing, go for it! I have this paired with a Ryzen 3700x CPU in case anyone is wondering. ... show more

  • AMD dropped the ball with their drivers (UPDATE WITH A HIGHER SCORE)
This card is really really good, just read the 5 star reviews raving about this card. It's a beast, games run silky smooth. Pros: -This card is top of the line for an extremely cheap price compared to NVidia cards (we're talking a difference of ~$300) of the same caliber. -I've thrown games like Warzone on the highest settings just to test how well it runs and it runs very well. I'm running a 1440p 70hz monitor and it was able to handle it easily. I imagine 4k and higher refresh rates would be able to run similarly well. Cons: -This card is BIG. Like absolutely monstrous. Installing it was a nightmare and it's so heavy I'm afraid to have my case standing up due to the weight of the thing. Getting a support is a must if you want peace of mind. (I've updated this review here because much of the problems I go into below are no longer the case): After many driver updates and settings changes the card seems very stable. I haven't had a black screen crash in months and can finally have peace of mind. If you're still waiting on buying this because of reports of bad drivers I'd say it's a pretty safe time to purchase this now. (I'm leaving this portion of the review here but just know I haven't had any driver issues in a while) -THIS IS THE BIGGEST CON AND THE ONLY REASON I'VE RATED THIS SO LOW: The drivers are HORRIBLE. AMD have essentially ruined this otherwise amazing card with their trash drivers. I can't play games reliably due to intermittent black screen crashes that forces a computer restart. This issue seems to be very common among owners of this generation of cards. I've tried many fixes including installing earlier drivers from 2019 and nothing has been a 100% fix. It's so sporadic in its crashes as well, sometimes it'll happen within the first few minutes of booting a game up and sometimes it happens only after I've been playing for a few hours. If you don't have this card and are thinking on buying it I would REALLY try to wait until AMD fully fixes this driver problem. If you have this card and are experiencing similar crashes try these common solutions that have helped other people: uninstall the horrible 2020 drivers and instead install the latest 2019 drivers (version 19.12.1), disable Enhanced Sync (I would disable everything in the settings including any settings that say they "override application settings" and only use your games graphics settings); running games in Borderless mode (I noticed alt+tabbing would cause the crash sometimes); if you have an AMD processor I've heard disabling Precision Boost in your BIOS settings has helped some people. Until AMD fixes these driver problems I'm going to keep this rating at 2 stars. The card is great but the drivers need a ton of work. ... show more

  • THICK...More like Long...and FAST - UPDATE GODFALL
Love the Card. Be aware this thing is 13inches long. I have a full size Corsair Case and had to "wedge" it in. You need 2 eight pin power connectors. It's recommended at least 600 Watt PSU. It's a bit noisy game level and runs around 50C in my case. Keep in mind I have two 80mm. a 200mm and two top of case fans. Runs 4k at ultra in games like Wolfenstein New Colossus, Doom Eternal etc. Getting right at 60FPS. I'm sure this would kill 1440p. Besides I haven't seen any 4k "Monitors" not TV's that do better than 60FPS. It's expensive but worth it. Free games are meh. Would have purchase anyways. Upgraded from an EVGA GTX 970SC - Buy it you won't be disappointed. *** 12/4 - Drivers for GodFall or AMD are really wonky. Every time I try to start GODFALL System shuts off completely. Doesn't power back on unless you turn the PSU switch off and on. DOA - Scared the crap out of me the first time. I updated everything and I can now get to the splash screen....and ZOIKES>....DEAD AGAIN> F!@ ... show more

  • Great card thus far
First AMD card I've bought, wasn't a fan of AMD in the past as they had a history of hardware that ran extremely hot which basically translates to shorter hardware life expectancy. XFX unfortunately earned themselves a bad rep with their 5700 xt line of cards due to their thicc II card having serious overheating problems. It's actually hard to find many reviews for this revision, but can confirm this card runs extremely cool, but I also have a custom fan curve with complete disregard for noise, it does get loud, but they keep the card very cool. Playing any game with it being around 70-80f in my room, the card under load has remained around 60's and under. As far as FPS goes ~100 @1440p, 165hz on max settings (100% res scale) across all games (EI Battlefield 1, CoD: MW). This is paired with a 9700k and 32gb CL 15. The one and only negative thing I may have to say is the packaging truly is terrible. Not much to protect the hardware (box was perfectly intact though). But on the flip side, I can recall my last card from Nvidia having even less protective packaging so there's that. But over all it was very generic, almost like something you'd buy used. Something that actually annoyed me is the plastic covering on the cards shroud was a massive pain to peel off, they didn't hold back on it, I'll say that much. Somewhat irrelevant though, the card itself works great and I like that it's nothing too flashy and isn't trying hard with the Im A GaMeR BrO designs. Lastly, drivers. I'm not sure how many of these reviews were before the latest driver update, but as of right now the only issue I've had with the drivers was with WoW Classic, I ended up having to reinstall it for whatever reason, haven't had issues with any other games. The thing I have to commend AMD for is their Adrenaline software is superb, way more options (including its own custom fan curve software 10/10), way better UI than GeForce Experience, maybe I'm now an AMD shill, but Adrenaline alone makes me not want to buy another Nvidia card. Depending on how long this card lasts in lifespan and performance, I can easily see myself buying more AMD cards. ... show more

  • Really great GPU
First things to notice are, of course, are that it's pretty big. Therefore, expect to not be able to use a 2nd PCI e slot. Lucky I had a 3rd one that was far from it to install my WiFi adapter. Due to it's size/weight it will sag. In my picture you'll see that I have a makeshift prop-up (little plastic cup and foam(and a figure for decoration)). The GPU runs every game you'd want. I play almost everything at max graphics or near. Be wary though, as infamous games will make it hard i.e. Minecraft (shaders), Jurassic Park evolution (crashing is common for the game), and things of that nature. If you come along these problems just disable them or lower the graphics. In my experience some games like that are hit or miss. They are rare but expect it to happen. Another thing is to keep up with driver updates, it's like if I don't it seems to crash after a given time? It's easy to fix if you know the problem but just very inconvenient. Still I really love this GPU. It looks amazing and beafy. With 3 fans it may get loud. As for VR it used to run great for a while but I think it's just falling a bit behind. Crashes and hiccups make it not very reliable but still capable of running things. ... show more

  • Excellent Performance Value
Regarding driver issues and high temps: I was skeptical having heard of the driver issues that plagued the 5700 XT's at launch and the horror stories of this card running 100c. I am here to tell you that I am running the latest drivers as of this writing (20.8.1) and having zero issues. My idle temp (GPU fans off) is right around 40c and at 100% GPU load the temp is 65-69c with the stock cooler. I am running an older Cooler Master HAF case with plenty of air flow and that might contribute to my experience but I suspect folks talking about temps are either referring to the THICC II model which previously had a cooling issue or a different implementation of the 5700 XT altogether. Regarding performance: I upgraded from an XFX RX 580, which is a good budget FHD (aka 1080p) gaming card. The FPS difference for me while gaming is huge, with most titles hitting double or more the framerate. For reference, I am running an i9-9900k on an ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E with an XFX 750W Pro PSU. The two games that I have played since upgrading are COD Warzone and Borderlands 3. Warzone FHD max settings bounce between 130-150 FPS with OBS recording on the same system. Borderlands 3 FHD max settings bounces between 100-120 FPS. Please note that my review is limited to FHD gaming as my preference is to game at or as close to 144Hz as possible on typical desktop gaming displays for the types of games that I play. Your mileage may vary. Regarding value: The XFX RX 5700 THICC III Ultra competes with and often beats the competing nVidia 2070 Super in benchmarks and real world usage. The nVidia 2080 Super is the next best performing current generation card on the market right now, but it nets marginal performance gains for nearly twice the price which leads me to crown this particular 5700 XT the value king for enthusiast gaming. A very good friend of mine has a Zotac 2080 Super and depending on the game and driver specific optimizations, I can actually get higher FHD framerates at the stock XFX clocks. ... show more
