  • Perfect operation, check
Color awesomeness, check. Perfect operation, check. Wasn't really planning on getting a console this generation at my age, and I actually preferred my PS3 to the 360, but comparing the current models, this seemed like a more logical choice for. Some things I couldn't find in my research; there is ~760GB free space after initial setup. Upon initial boot up, it downloaded a ~1440MB update for the console, followed by an update for the controller(no USB cable required on new model controllers to update). After updating and retrieving my gamer tag, I hooked up a 1TB western digital elements drive, format was just a few seconds, set this drive to install too. Next came the game code for the included battlefield 1 game, ~64GB download. Had a couple games on disc to install so inserted on, forza 5. It starts installing, and notifies of an update, which I accepted. At this point it bumps battlefield down in the que and paused it's download. After fora, I inserted horizon 2, again it installs from disc at same time it downloads an update.once all was said and done, approximately 24 hrs later, it was ready to go, this on a ~10Mbps isp. Runs quiet and cool, graphics are awesome. The down side for me is my 'in the sticks' 1Mbps speed at home. I have to take with me to work to do the updates. One of my boys bought doom, it was a ~44GB install that also wanted a 58GB update. One nice feature I found was in the network setting, I could simple go offline, which allowed the game to be played without having to update. As I type, it's currently at work updating that game... Couldn't believe the size of games compared to 360, but considering windows 10 uses GB's of space compared to XP, doesn't really surprise me. Love the color and included stand. Definitely pleased with the new Xbox. ... show more

  • So Much More than Just a Video Game Console.
I have now had this Xbox One S console for almost six months and am extremely satisfied with the purchase. I bought the Battlefield 1 edition which includes the console and controller in a unique grey, almost greenish color. It also (obviously) comes with the Battlefield 1 Early Enlister Deluxe Edition game disc which offers a bit of exclusive DLC content. Although I really enjoy the game, it is the console itself that has me thrilled that I invested in this updated version. I upgraded to the One S from the original Xbox One strictly for the larger HDD and the 4K UHD capability. That 4K capability has made a world of difference when playing games that are capable of the 2160 resolution as well as viewing 4K video content. In addition to playing 4K BDs, it also gives access to streaming 4K content from Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services that provide the content. What's more, it upconverts 1080p resolution video to something approaching 2160 resolution. The only real gripe I have is that it does not have a port for the Kinect 2.0. But this is only a minor inconvenience as I only used the Kinect to speak to Cortana when using the Edge browser or to use voice commands for recording game video clips. Overall, at the $250 price-point that I got the One S for, you simply cannot beat this console as it is so much more than just for gaming. It is quite literally a full-on home entertainment system when you remember that it plays CDs, DVDs, BDs, 4K BDs, as well as streaming video services, Microsoft TV and Movies and allows you to watch television by connecting your cable or satellite provider's set-top box via an HDMI connection. If you buy this as a full-fledged entertainment system, I recommend buying the Microsoft Xbox One Media Remote, which can also be purchased from Amazon. This is one of the best investments you can make for your home entertainment platform. ... show more

  • Past it's prime: A Brief History of Box
Owning an Xbox when it first released back in 2003 was a glorious moment. It promised next level power and graphics that were unprecedented at the time. It almost felt like the console was trail blazing and the team behind it was genuinely interested in providing a unique new experience for gamers - and with the acquisition of Halo and the release, it was history. The next years provided an impressive catalog of games, many Xbox exclusives and Microsoft was willing to put money on the line to bring in talent. Halo, Gears of War, Fable and other franchises - the Xbox was THE console for shooters in general and even great PC games were being ported with great results. Then the 360 continued this lineage as the COD series flourished and charged into the era of Xbox Live, enhancing the experience and still being a console to bring friends over and enjoy split-screen. The next iteration of Xbox was uncertain but seemed promising to say the least. What went wrong was a series of missteps that could've been avoided. First, The Xbox One was announced to be releasing with Kinect and aimed with lower hardware specs to capture the casual market - which is one of the key defining features of the original - power. We all know consoles and computers constantly need longevity and this was a huge shot in the foot by limiting the hardware of the console from the get go. Second, split-screen or party games, or even Xbox exclusive games have dried up and are non-existent - the developers that once made great games are now gone or divided up pushing out a yearly redundant title that offers nothing new or genuine. There are also significantly less games in the library, so unless you are dying to play Halo 5 (which was a disaster), the latest COD (offering nothing new or exciting), PUBG (gimmicky and bugged), there is nothing worth seeing here - which is a huge disappointment to a once great console. Unless you have friends that play it regularly, you'll quickly get bored of the same game play of yesteryear. ... show more
