  • Replacing an old friend and making a new friend...fast.
I had my 360 S (250 GB) for a few years, it was my media streamer, it was pretty much an integral part of my home theater system. I had just returned the one I purchased at Amazon, pangs of guilt really, there is a GameStop near my house (6 miles, near some great burrito restaurants ). This morning my 360S ate a disk, well, that was it's end. With all the points I had at Gamestop and all the points I would get from the purchase (PS4 or Xbox) new console would make it worth it. Of course there was a great burrito on my mind for the post purchase feast. It never happened, I ran home to set this machine up. The Xbox One set up really quickly, the update which runs at the of the first startup really went fast, I guess there wasn't a lot of internet traffic, it ran in 10 minutes, I signed in with my Xbox Gold ID and lo and behold, everything came back, except of course new games and stuff (music and videos) I stream in from my Mac through NullRiver 360Connect. I noticed my HTR was telling me that I was receiving a DTS encoded signal from my new Xbox One, sweet. I thought the improved spatial sound quality and clarity was in my head, it was, it came through my ears. So now, in spite of a currently limited application base, they have my two favorites, Amazon Instant Video and Netflix. Everything looks and sounds beautiful. I purchased a new copy of "Watch Dogs" with some of my bonus points and the game play was really great, I think I'm really loving the Xbox one, as I type this review I'm typing away I'm watching a show done in 1080p with some really nice sound, all in all, this box is totally worth it as a streamer if nothing else. Sure I played Watch Dogs for a few minutes and then went back and listened to some Xbox music, all done in Dolby Digital, which my Mac Mini won't do, but any modern PC will, but that is a subject for another day.. What a treat, I got to hear some real sonic imagining and separation, not the usual cacophonous mush that comes out of my Mac Mini. The Xbox one looked around my network and at my history with Xbox music and in a few minutes my entire music library was up and ready to go. Look, I'm like a kid with a new toy, I will probably be up in an all night media fest, if for no other reason than I'm enjoying the sonic imagery and great picture quality. The games will come in time, but right now, an Xbox is once again the primary quality streaming device in my system, now I can have over 100 TB of additional storage and I already have 6TB on the Mac's desktop. All in all with trade in and bonus points the whole thing was a deal. This is one really nice piece of hardware, serving both as a console and multimedia center. It's even pretty and is size wise it's about a 2U rack mount, small and sleek enough to look good in your home theater center. The 360 S had a great sound chip, the One is has an even better sound processor as well as a much better graphics processor. Microsoft was right in some of their ideas about integration into Home Theater, it is a good thing, because so few pay attention to these details, which make the Xbox One a great piece of equipment for any home entertainment system. The Xbox Gold network is about as secure and reliable as networks get. Most server rooms are populated with MS Server Products as I'm sure the Microsoft network is. This is an advantage Microsoft holds quietly over other console vendors. When my Xbox 360 S died this morning all I could think about was the pain of replacing it, once I took it the Xbox One out of the box, the Xbox one took very little time to set up and started producing high quality material with a low signal to noise ratio and great gain to the preamp. My mourning for my old Xbox 360 S was over at that point. It's value as a piece of home entertainment is far greater than it's price. ... show more

  • Great Console, even better without Kinect
This is the second X1 I own, the other one being a kinect version I purchased for my wife. When I first saw Microsoft offering a kinectless version I was disappointed since I felt it would make developers loose incentive to develop for the kinect. But after playing a kinect game on my other X1 I'm glad they are offering a kinectless version. The technology for gaming with kinect is just not there yet. Its great for voice commands and navigating menu's but that doesn't justify a $100 increase. And you could possibly get those commands working through a headset. *Console* The console itself is extremely quiet and runs very cool. I cannot imagine it ever overheating. *User Interface* The UI was good at launch and now it is great and will continue to improve with Microsofts regular updates. *Controller* The controller isn't a lot different than the 360 controller and that is a good thing since many of us love the 360 controller. What is different are the triggers and d-pad. The triggers are silent and a lot smoother, the d-pad is 10000x better and actually functions properly. *Headset* The bundled headset is actually surprisingly comfortable and works great. *Kinect* Great for voice commands but sadly when it comes to games the kinect just isn't accurate and suffers from the same problems as the kinect 1. *Games* The current games library is not the best but better than a lot of previous console launches. If you are not loving any of the games available right now I still think it is worth purchasing the console for its multimedia capabilities. *Cons* To me there are 4 cons and they are the reason why I rated 4 stars and not 5. They are not deal breakers, but I do feel Microsoft could have done better with them. 1: The actual console size, its not huge but it is still bigger than the original xbox 360 was.(We can hope for a much smaller slim version in the future) 2: A non removable hard drive. (You can now use external hard drives) 3: The power supply being external. (Not sure what Microsoft was thinking making a console this large and still having the power supply external but this is also something I hope a slim model corrects) 4: No backwards compatibility. Unlike the jump from the original xbox to the 360 we are going from HD games with achievements to HD games with achievements. Games from the last generation have so much more reply value and it would have been nice to be able to play them on an xbox one. (I have heard Microsoft might try to have backwards compatibility through their cloud service but only time will tell if that can actually be done) All in all this is a great console and with it now being $400 there is more reason to purchase one. ... show more

  • One for the History Books
I purchased this Xbox One on August 2014 as a second console of this generation for my household. My first One console still works fine and I originally purchased the console when the first Titanfall was released, which was the main reason I purchased a One. Titanfall is a superb game, but this is a review about the Xbox One, so I will start with some comments on the actual console itself. The One still works great. I have logged plenty of hours into this bad boy. This is a great way to enjoy video games. I am not going to overly praise the One because there are some faults, nor am I going to bash the Sony console because I know it is also a great console. I have enjoyed this console that has a pretty good selection of games to buy. Or if you have Xbox Live, you almost don't even need to purchase games with all of the free games that are given with the subscription. The Xbox Home, in my opinion, works pretty well. Although I did love the Xbox 360 Dashboard, I still appreciate the way the One's menus are laid out. When the console was purchased, I noticed immediately how much more quiet the One is compared to the 360. I had one Xbox 360 die from the Red Rings of Death, and I am grateful that I have not run into any type of similar problems with the Xbox One. There have been some problems that I have encountered, which were a few freezes with the console, which most of the time, didn't actually freeze the console but the game that was currently being played. Another issue I have with the console is the fact that I cannot listen to my music in the background of my video games. Not really sure why it was not available considering the Xbox 360 had this functionality. This is not a deal breaker or deserving of a lower star rating though. Overall, I am very happy with the console and it is a very reasonable price to pay to be able to play some very great video games. ... show more

  • Microsoft is dead to me
I have both an xbone and ps4 and I have to say I'm disappointed with microsoft. Both consoles came with a stock mic for gaming. The difference? The ps4s stock mic actually worked. The Xbox one has a software issue that breaks headsets (it pretty much broke my stock headset right off the bat). After doing some research I found out that it can happen just as easily with any headset you buy for it. Oh wait I know! I'll use a bluetooth...nope cant do that. How about a mic with a 3.5mm audio jack? Hmm cant do that either. So, Microsoft, you're telling me I have to buy the kinect to talk to people in game? I dont have that problem on ps4 (not trying to fuel the console war, I'm just really pissed off at microsoft for this panzy ass paper weight they call a gaming console). So with the mic issue out of the way lets get to another. The controller feels a lot cheaper than it looks. And with the mic adapter plugged in its really bulky and uncomfortable. The 360 controllers were worth their weight in gold. WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING MICROSOFT? Now for the interface of the console. The whole thing just seems awkward. Yeah its grouped into "catagories", but at first everything is really hard to find. I had to look up online how to get into the settings so I could update my mic and controller (only to have the mic stop working 10 minutes later because of the software issue). Oh and one last thing. The xbox ones wireless wifi capability just took a crap and now only a wired connection will allow it to connect to live. So yeah. Thats why I'm pissed at microsoft. Sorry but if you want a next gen console I cant recommend the xbox one, go with the ps4 instead. Theres nothing "next gen" about this paper weight. ... show more

  • Xbox One is very nice, better than expected.
Extremly nice piece of hardware. Can't begin to explain how nice the graphics are. People who say the Xbox One is "a piece of junk" or "not worth the money" are complete morons. If you dont like the system, why not just switch the Playstation or just not play video games? It's of course 100x better than the piece of junk Playstation 4. Why would anyone want to use a system made by such a small brand like sony? The controller on Ps4 is awkward and feels wierd in your hands, and if you play claw (like I do) the only controller available to you is the Xbox One controller. But what's the point in bashing another companys system, lets get to the good stuff about Xbox One. -First off, the Xbox One is about 100$ cheaper than the Ps4 -The Xbox One runs in 1080p at 60 frames per second for most games. -There a bunch of Xbox One only games like Halo and Forza, which are very good games. -The Xbox One is going to be backwards compatible soon, which means you can play all your classic Xbox 360 games on 1080p -The dashboard takes a couple of days to learn (normal to any system) and works flawlessly and is very easy to use. -You don't have to surgically put the headset in your ear, very simple and easy to use. -More mature and all around better people play Xbox One than Ps4 What about cons, theres has got to be cons, right? Ok I will list you all of the cons to the Xbox One. -Umm, sorry I can't think of any. All in all the Xbox One very good and the Playstation 4 is kind of, well, it's just bad and should be thrown in the garbage. :) ... show more

  • Xbox One sans-Kinnect
Microsoft shot itself in the foot when they launched the Xbox One. If they hadn't bundled the Kinnect, the Xbox One would have stood a better change competing with the PS4. In my opinion all human augmentation devices like Kinnect, Move etc are just gimmicks that work only 70% of the time but look great on paper and commercials. That's the reason I went straight for the PS4 and waited months later before taking the plunge on the Xbox One, because to me, the Kinnect was a useless unnecessary investment not worth the extra $100, privacy concerns set aside... Having waited this long I can say the console looks promising. First impression was better and won the Xbox One some points in contrast to my first PS4 unit which arrived with a blue light right out of the box. Feel free to look at my past reviews and my prior verified Amazon review to see that I'm not a fan boy like most of the trolls here who live with their mom and dads and can't afford the luxury of enjoying both consoles. Physically the console is gigantic when put side by side with the PS4 but unlike the PS4 it has more internal space to breathe and thus is less noisier (those who have played Killzone on the PS4 know what I'm talking about). If you're about aesthetics you may like the PS4 a lot better. The controller feels a bit better than the PS4's which is a drain on the battery due to the always on LED indicator. Additionally, the triggers have force feedback which makes the experience a lot more enjoyable when playing racing games such as Forza 5. In the visuals department I have to say both PS4 and Xbox One perform great. Forza 5 and Ryse look very good but nothing earth shattering. I have experienced some lag when playing Forza 5 which I found very disappointing for a next gen console, but the PS4 has had its hick-ups too like game crashes when playing Killzone (later fixed with a software update) IMO, Killzone is the crown jewel of the PS4 and shows how much more powerful the PS4 hardware is compared to Microsoft's. I have yet to see an Xbox One game that looks this good. I only care about exclusives here, since that's the sole reason I buy consoles, otherwise I stick to my GTX 780 gaming PC for playing games. Start-up times are also a lot longer on the Xbox One compared to the PS4 but Microsoft is being sneaky about it by never shutting the console down after the first boot. Instead, the console is put it into sleep mode. This is given away by the light on the power brick that never turns off. This behavior can be changed from the Settings menu though, and once changed, cold boots will increase ten-fold. In the gaming department I believe neither the PS4 or the Xbox offer a lot when it comes to exclusives, but I believe the PS4 has the upper hand with Killzone, Infamous, Infamous, Knack, Resogun. Sure, Forza 5 looks good, and so does Ryse but that's about it. Tinfall is not really an exclusive being available on the PC also, and the rest of the yet to be released exclusives are months away from being released. I'm not going to review all the media-hub capabilities because I have not used them nor I intend to. The main reason I buy consoles is strictly to play games the old fashioned way, with my two hands and ten fingers. Verdict is get both consoles, the power lies with both. ... show more

  • I've Never Owned an Xbox. I Like This!
I've played on Play Station my whole life and wanted to finally buy an Xbox because I'm tired of missing out on exclusives. I want to expand my experience as an all around gamer. Some of my favorite exclusives come from Sony's side, but I am also a big fan of FPS and always felt that the PS controller has held me back while playing them. I am really enjoying the Xbox One controller and it feels more fluid and natural in tense situations in games like Call of Duty. I am sticking with mostly FPS on the Xbox One and casual games on the PS4. I currently own a PS3 and Xbox One, but I will be making a purchase on the PS4 as soon as possible. I can not directly compare the X1 with the PS4, but so far the X1 does have great graphics from what I've experienced. The OS is something I am not a big fan of because I hate Windows 8 (the OS is similar) and I feel like you don't have all the info you want in places like the settings, Xbox Store, etc. In my honest opinion, even the PS3 beats the Xbox One in terms of the OS and all the info it gives you. If I am downloading DLC I can easily see the progress and know if it's done, the X1 feels like a hassle. All in all, I think the Xbox One is a great console and I look forward to what the future holds for it. ... show more
