  • Awesome yet affordable smart bulb
Color: White Style: 4-Pack
The media could not be loaded. This is my very in-depth review for: Wyze Labs WLPA19 LED Smart Home Light Bulb (4 Pack) If you prefer a quicker summary, go straight to the summary section. Background I have a few Wyze cams I bought a bit over a year. I liked them so much that when the Wyze bulb came out I wanted to try it right away. I have other smart bulbs, but I decided that if I liked these I would swap the two I have for these. Spoiler Alert, I liked them. I am installing 9 total bulbs throughout my house, 7 in an area that is partially a construction zone, and 2 to replace my current smart bulbs of a different brand. So far, I have installed the ones in my basement. I don’t think I should have any other problems installing the other two this weekend but if I do I will update the review. Unboxing The presentation is neat. The four light bulbs are packaged in a two by two array inside the box; each bulb comes individually bagged. A quick-start guide comes with them, which points you in the right direction, but I find it to be lacking depth. The four bulbs are 9.5-watt LED bulbs, but they are equivalent in luminosity to a 60-watt incandescent light bulb. They look and feel like many other smart light bulbs, other than perhaps being a bit heavier, but not too much. The color temperature of the light from these bulbs go from very warm (2700K) to very cool (6500K). The guide directs you to download and install the brains of the operation, the Wyze app. I cannot attest to how good the App is for android devices, but it works well with my iPhone. The app itself is very intuitive. No hub is needed for them to work. If you do have a hub, they can also be integrated with other home automation devices through IFTTT (If This Then That). You can share accesses with the app, but I have found that is easier and efficient to just have one account shared across multiple devices when possible. Installation: The Wyze app does a really good job guiding you through the installation process; it was straight forward. In a nutshell, you screw the bulb into a bulb socket, you add them in the wyze app as a new device, get the bulbs to enter setup mode, and then you connect them to the Wi-Fi. A few pointers on the installation: When screwing the bulb to a socket ensure you know which switch controls the socket you are installing them on. You can install them all on a specific socket and move them after they are connected to the system. To start with the installation process, click on the three dots on the top right of the screen. From the menu that pops up, click on “Add a product” then click on “Wyze bulb”. From there, getting the light bulb to setup mode is a matter of flicking the light switch off then on three times as prompted by the app. The bulbs only work with a 2.4GHz WiFi network. If you are connected to 5GHz network change to a 2.4 GHz if you want to avoid some frustration. Once you enter the bulbs into setup mode the app will open your WiFi settings for you to select the bulb connection. This will allow the app to connect to the bulb. The screen will go to a countdown while the bulb and app attempt the connection. Setting them up for daily use: There are several ways to trigger the lights. They can be manually activated with the Wyze App. The bulbs can also use other Wyze devices to serve as inputs. They can be setup to use other non-Wyze smart devices as inputs to integrate all your devices through IFTTT. You can use the Google assistant or Alexa for voice control. The reason for using smart bulbs depends on the individual. My main reason for them is that I want to use them with voice control and I want to make it appear there is someone in the house when I go on vacation. Thus, most of my lights I have them setup to me turn on and off with voice controls. I have light bulb groups and different color temperatures for different reasons (Cleaning vs Hanging out). I also have all of them on timers in case I forget to give the “good night” command to Alexa. I don’t have the Wyze sense but I do have several Wyze cams which I use as sensor inputs. One of those is currently aiming through my backyard door to switch on a group of lights if it “sees” a person, not movement. I also tried the vacation mode for a while to see if it will meet my needs and it is flawless. It is not turning the lights on, every 15 seconds. It mimics, as possible, real patterns. It will turn on a light for a bit, shut down, wait a while, go back at it. Problems encountered: I had a few hiccups when connecting a few of them to my Wi-Fi on the first try. In four of the seven that I have installed to this point, the connection timed out when trying to connect. For those four, after it timed out, it gave me the option to retry. I tried again, and they connected right away (I showed this on the video). When interacting with other devices through IFTTT, they took somewhere between 1 and 5 seconds to react thus, I don’t really see IFTTT as an option I would use. I understand that IFTTT is inherently slow, but just a heads up I guess. Additionally, when ordering a group of lights to turn on and off in rapid succession, one or two of the lights in the group could fail to execute the command, regardless of doing so with the app or voice command. ********** Summary: What I liked about these bulbs is that: - They have a very wide range of white temperatures from 2700K to 6500K. - They are very economical compared to other bulbs in their class (about 10$ per bulb for the 4pack vs 15-20 for their leading competitors) - They integrate very well with other Wyze devices, which are also very economical. - The integration with Alexa is also seamless. - The installation process was easy and intuitive. - Vacation mode works really well. What I disliked about them: - Waiting for the bulbs to connect only to see them fail in four of seven tries was a bit too much. They did connect right away after re-trying but maybe they could have made a wider connection window if this was going to be an issue… - A group of bulbs having some of them not turning on or off successfully after a series of commands in rapid succession, although understandable, is also bothersome. Other thoughts: These are very impressive units, that work well for anyone getting their feet wet in the home automation pit. They will get the job done but they are not free of faults. They are good if planning to integrate with other Wyze devices or Alexa. Integrating them to other smart devices through IFTTT is to slow for my taste. That being said, at this price point they are the best available and although they are not perfect, to me they are well deserving of a five-star rating. ... show more

  • Great WiFi bulbs at a a great price. Just need to be meticulous when setting up.
Color: White Style: 4-Pack
Just got my 4 pack from Amazon (Actually $1 cheaper if you have Prime and consider shipping cost when ordered direct from Wyze) I was able to get all 4 to connect without trouble. I did my research first though by reading comments here and on Amazon. Here’s what I did: - Put the bulb in the socket and make sure the switch is off (if your light location is far away from your router, move it temporarily closer or put the bulb in another socket for the set up) - Put my phone on 2.4ghz WiFi network. - Open Wyze app and click the ... then Add product then Wyze bulb. (I did one bulb at a time to completion) - Put the bulb in pairing mode (Switch the light on, off, on, off and on again. The color temperature should start off warm the third time and it will pulsate.) - Follow the steps on the app to put your phones wifi on the bulbs network (To get my phone to see the network, I just toggled WiFi off and on and it showed up after that) - Continue to follow the steps from the app to finish setup ( Name the bulb, set a color temperature, brightness level & schedule if desired) - Redo the process for each bulb - After all bulbs are connected, I created a group to control them together - Then I opened my Alexa app and made sure the Wyze skill was enabled. - I then ran device discovery and checked the bulbs were added and labeled as lights - Lastly I added the bulbs to their respective groups in Alexa and made sure voice control was working. I’ll update my comment after a while of use but everything works as advertised so far. ... show more

  • Here's A Detailed Explanation of How To Setup Your Wyze Lightbulbs
Color: White Style: 4-Pack
Hi all, hopefully these instructions will straighten things out for those having setup issues with these Wyze lightbulbs. I broke it up into a bunch of small steps so it's clear what to do (once you get used to setting up one device, doing it again for others goes rather quickly): 1. Before you do anything, go to the WiFi settings of your device and make sure you have a solid 2.4 GHz connection WHICH INCLUDES THE INTERNET (i.e. not just “connected, no Internet”). Also, a 5.0 GHz connection will not work when setting up these Wyze lightbulbs. 2. Download and install the Wyze app from your device's store. 3. Once the Wyze app is installed, start it and a Login screen will appear. Select the New Account option and enter your email and new password. Wyze will send you a temporary code to your email account which you must retrieve and enter so it can verify you as an authenticated user. You have a limited time to do this. 4. For the first lightbulb, install only one new Wyze lightbulb in a lamp for now, to avoid any Bluetooth confusion. This is also the step you’ll be returning to later if installing more lightbulbs. 5. Turn on the lamp. The Wyze lightbulb should be bright (there are 2 modes; the bright mode should start by default. 6. In the Wyze app, press the three dots on the upper-right corner of the app’s screen. 7. On the menu that pops up, click Add a Product. 8. On the next menu, click on Wyze Bulb. The Wyze Bulb Setup screen appears. 9. The setup process has four steps. ‘STEP 1’ will ask you to connect your phone (or whatever device) to your 2.4 GHz WiFi network and have your WiFi password handy. You should already be WiFi connected; if not, switch screens to your WiFi setup screen and get connected to the Internet then switch back to the Wyze app. For Android users, you’ll be tapping the square icon on the bottom-right of your phone/device to switch back and forth several times throughout this whole process. 10. ‘STEP 2’ of the lightbulb setup screen will ask you to power cycle your light 3 times for it to enter pairing mode. Do this, and pairing mode will be indicated by your new Wyze lightbulb pulsing from bright to dim. If you have difficulty smoothly turning your lamp on and off 3 times (like I did with my desk lamp), just gently unscrew the lightbulb manually until it loses power, screw it back in a bit until it turns on, then off, on, etc. 3 times so it enters pairing mode. Pairing mode is obvious when the lightbulb instantly dims yellow and starts pulsing. 11. Click Next. 12. ‘STEP 3’: Enter your WiFi password (if it’s not already listed) and click Next. 13. ‘STEP 4’: This may be confusing but read carefully. The app will say ‘Connect your phone to “Wyze_Smartbulb_Appxxx” and return to Wyze App’. Do this by switching over to your phone’s WiFi Setup screen (for Android users click the little square icon on your phone on the bottom-right, then select the WiFi setup screen, or somehow get to your phone’s WiFi setup screen) and select the Wyze lightbulb device that is now paired and listed amongst all the available WiFi connections. Your device will connect to it and say ‘Connected, No Internet’. 14. Switch back over to the Wyze app. 15. Immediately the Wyze app will say Connecting and count down from 150 seconds. 16. Typically, in about 10 or so seconds it now it should say Binding Successful and ask you to Please Enter a Device Name. Click that area, enter a unique name then click OK (if you have more than one Wyze lightbulb in the same lamp, it might help to clarify things by naming them something like ‘Bed Light 1’ and ‘Bed Light 2’ etc.). 17. Click Finish Setup 18. The app should say Successful and you should now be back to the main Wyze app screen. Your new lightbulb with the custom name you gave it will be listed, and the lightbulb will be fully on in bright mode. 19. BEFORE YOU CONTINUE, upgrade the bulb's firmware. At the bottom-right of the Wyze app, click on Account. 20. Click on Firmware Upgrade. 21. Your newly setup lightbulb will be listed and most likely, to the right of it, will be a button labeled Upgrade. Click that and let it upgrade to the latest firmware (it is updating the software located in the lightbulb itself. 22. After about 30 seconds or so, it should say “Up to Date”. 23. Click on the left arrow of the app (top left), or the phone/device’s left arrow on the bottom, to return to the previous Account screen. From here you can select one of several options, including the “Works With” option to get it to work with Alexa or whatever smart device. If you have more Wyze lightbulbs to install however, click on the Home button on the bottom-left to go to the screen that shows your new lightbulb(s), and repeat way back from step 4. If you’re done with this initial setting up of your lightbulb(s), from here you can do a bunch of things like adding rules, events, grouping or incorporating everything with Alexa, etc… Also, as for Alexa, once you perform the “Works With Alexa” in the Wyze app, it will install the Wyze Skill directly into the Alexa app in your phone/device. Then it’s just a matter of futzing with that new skillset within the Alexa app. In Alexa, try clicking on the '+' icon in Devices and adding a group, then adding the new devices from Wyze that should have ported over to Alexa. However you have Alexa set up it's kinda neat to say things like "Alexa, dim bedroom lights to 30%" etc. I hope all of this helped you to get your lightbulbs up and running correctly! ... show more
